Earlier this week Adult DVD Empire changed the way it presents lists of titles (new releases, upcoming releases, etc...). They have added thumbnails to these screens (which can be disabled). At the same time, they have removed the cast list from these same screens.

I'm not sure which I prefer. While I like the addition of the thumbnails (they load quickly), I really liked having the cast list on the selection screen. I thought that this was an advantage that they had over other sites. Many times I have ended up purchasing a title that I had previously skipped over at other sites because I didn't recognize the title and never drilled down to the detail screen, but when seeing someone special in the cast would prompt me to drill down when I wouldn't have otherwise.

What do you guys think?

Cast list where it originally was. Shouldn't have changed. I agree with you.

They have added a number of new features. I think the series drop down list is a nice addition. It allows you to quickly navigate to the other titles in a series. (example Angry Anal 1,2,3...666, etc.) I first saw this feature about a month ago on BikiniBoat.com and thought it was a good idea then.

There's one thing that I don't care for that won't affect most people but it will be a pain for some. You can no longer search for gay DVDs from the DVD section of the site. You have to go to the gay tab to see search results for gay titles.

I don't think that their new scheme of displaying categories is as intuitive as the old method. The information is the same it's just displayed very differently, similar to a Yahoo! directory listing.

As usual, the crowd at ADT is on the ball! Yes, it's true that we (Adult DVD Empire) are making changes to the site. These changes should be complete within the next week or so.

A few things...The cast names will reappear on the search returns, and will always list the feature talent first.

As far as the category returns...I disagree with Drew about the category returns being "not as intuitive" as the old system. The new system allows us to break categories into unlimited sections, Thus allowing us to create new and exciting product groups. We have a few up already, and are developing more everyday. For example, check out the Adult DVD>Feature category. Instead of the usual category list, now you have product groups such as: couples, brides, sci-fi, spoofs, etc...Likewise we've broken our novelties into new product groups as well.

And the gay DVD's...we came to the decision that most gay customers prefer not to wade through the straight section to get to the gay product. This is the first step in a complete overhall of our gay product.

Please remember, these changes are not complete - that's why no official announcement has been made. We'll be posting an official release as soon as we touch everything up. I would like to thank everyone for their patience during the switch.

Hello, Mike. Your site rocks. The list of the ten best-sellers of your site (with full credit to ADE, of course) is published monthly in my magazine, so readers can have a slight idea of good titles to purchase.

In my opinion, the only thing that really should have remained the same is the full cast listing in the "GENERAL" section. But of course, some of the ADT friends here can give their two cents too, and help improve your site.

Me, I would like the suggest the option to search movies by DIRECTOR's name too. Is it feasible?

I see the value in the new system and agree that it's infinitely more flexible. It's just harder to view the list at a quick glance to know what type of movie it is. I'm the type of shopper that rarely searches by category. I use them for reference only while on a product page. The old system made it real easy to get a basic understanding of what to expect from a flick. I'm easily confused. My brain processes "Straight, Black, Cumshots" a lot faster than "Category>Compilation>Black>,Category>Compilation>Cumshots,Genre>Black,Genre>Cumshots". I'm not saying I don't like the new functionality, only that there might be a more simplistic layout option.
I agree 100%. This is especially important with the new thumbnails. My point is the flipside of this logic. As an example many customers routinely shop for straight, gay, bisexual and transsexual DVDs. In the old system they could find the gay titles on adultdvdempire.com. With the new system they have to can find bisexual and gay titles at gaydvdempire and the rest at adultdvdempire. I agree that providing a filtered product list to the gay-only shopper is a great thing. I don't know if it's necessary to remove gay product from the search results on the straight site. Then again, I'm the type that is not offended by movie titles describing gay sex. I suspect that there are some shoppers that would prefer to pretend that these types of movies don't exist.

As a whole I think the new stuff is great. Empire is always the industry leader so many other stores attempt to emulate.

MasterB:

Just checked the page again, with the complete cast list now appearing.

By what I saw so far, now it's close to perfect.

Still miss the search by director, but I'm not in any rush.

Planet Sex,
Search by Director...sounds cool. We are working on a multitude of ideas for round two of our site re-design. Don't want to give away any secrets but I think that was one of them so you will be pleased when we launch them. It's very flattering to know that you use our top ten list! Awesome!

I'm glad everyone is giving us feedback on the changes, it really helps us serve you better. I personally read tons of email from customers with ideas and gripes, and can always be found lurking in these forums. After all, we are nothing without our customers.

Although I agree with Drew that the subsects are a little confusing at times, I really like the new look. Adding a director search should make it near perfect.

The format looks great, but the pages do not display properly. They appear jumbled etc. I have to refresh the page for things to be displayed as intended.

Atome, Steph: it happened to me too. But then I did a full cleanup of the cache (TEMP and TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES on the WIN ME folder) and things went smooth since then.

PlanetSex, could you explain how to do a full cleanup of the cache? I'll try this, but I'm not sure if it's my computer. The problem started once they changed their appearance. If the problem is caused by Adult DVD Empire, then they should fix things ASAP as it reduces the confidence one has with the site.

As you may know, the cache is the part of the computer that stores bits and pieces of previously visited sites, to speed up the d/l time in your next visit.

What may be happening is that the old data may be conflicting with the new layout of ADE.

To clean up the cache, just go to the folders

c:/windows/temp
c:/windows/temporary windows files

And DELETE everything that's inside those folders.

Usually, the Temporary Windows Files folder is filled with subfolders with funny names (UCC5LLTG, things like that).

When you try to delete em, a warning appears, telling you that those are system files and Windows may not run properly if you delete 'em.

Well, pay no mind and delete 'em anyway.

After all that, I suggest you to reboot, but that's not necessary.

I wouldn't point the finger at Empire just yet. Previous versions of Internet Explorer had serious problems with the way they handle page caching. A web site is supposed to have control over what content is cached and what isn't. It does this through a Cache-control directive in the response it sends to your browser when you request a page. It appears that IE completely ignores this directive and does it's own thing. There are a few settings you can change in IE to force it to check the server for never content prior using data from its own cache. If you're interested drop me a note and I can walk you through it.

Hey Drew. Remember what happened to me when I posted here from adultdvdempire? Boy..how many got to see my past purchases are previous orders.

I wonder if they still have that flaw?

To my knowledge that problem has been fixed for quite some time. The set of circumstances that enabled that to happen were very unique and were dependent upon a number of very specific circumstances.

For those of you that don't know what Sonic is referring to. He ran into a problem one time when he posted a link here in the forum to Adult DVD Empire's site. Adult DVD Empire uses a temporary userid= in the URL to keep track of your shopping cart and other things while you are at their site. Under very specific conditions it was possible for people to view Sonic's user profile for a brief period of time after he logged into his user profile at Empire's site. You could see his billing address and previous order history. It was not possible to view any credit card information.

I think it's important for everyone to realize that you should never post links in emails, message forums, newsgroups, etc., that contain something that remotely looks like it could be a shopper identification number. Stores have to use these numbers to support shoppers that do not have cookies enabled and for other reasons. These numbers can sometimes be a security risk if mishandled by a shopper.

Once again you guys are right on track. In switching over the site we omitted a graphic that caused some bad images and such, but it has been corrected.

Can't slip anything by you guys...

...Saki, that problem (as Drew stated) has been long corrected. However, I would agree with Drew in that you shouldn't copy links from a site while you are logged into their system. The procedure of using "User id's" is by no means unique to our site, and therefor this "flaw" is common to most sites that use them.

Mike, as a gay customer, I'd like my cake and eat it too. Is it possible for you to have the following: 1) Everything, including gay material available from the generic adult site while also having the gay site which restricts choices to gay & bisexual material? 2) Selection within gay material such as has long been available for generic erotica, i.e., gay/asian, gay/blacks, gay/compilations, gay/latinos, gay/masturbation, gay/orgies, gay/spanking, etc.; and 3) Directors as a searchable item?

You know what I would really like in the way of a "super search" facility? A series of check boxes that I could mark and have them stay marked until I clicked on a clear search button or until I left the site. And the first of the check boxes should be str8/bi/gay with none or all checked being a full search and one or two of the three choices being checked limiting the search to those options. Then the second and third sets of choices should be your various categories and studios selections. However, again, I'd like some way of making my choices sticky until I clicked on the clear search button.

Most sites give their gay customers the impression that gay material is just a profit center after-thought, especially with the disparity of prices compared to straight erotica. I realize that you probably don't make any greater percentage profit on a sale of gay material than you do on a similar sale of straight material; however there is an enormous disparity in costs from the customer's point of view.

Thank you for whatever you accomplish. All improvements are greatly appreciated.

I do believe that all of the top 10 lists on the adult dvd retailers sites are made up of titles they want to move. If these lists were acurate they would include mostly all of the 9.99 and bargain titles.

Mike is on paternity leave (he just had a baby) and I'm not sure if he is checking the forums -

Bill- still working on the cast names in the search returns, we'll post when there has been a development

Gaysatyr - those are some good ideas, we are still working with our long overlooked gay site. all suggestions are welcome as we want to make it as useful as possible.

Adultdvdlinks - I don't know why you insist on attacking our top ten lists. Look at it right now (8/6 10:30am EST) there are 3 titles from this months vivid clearance sale (Mr Marcus' Neighborhood #8, Nylon, and Action Sport Sex #11) they have done very well in the last few days - because they are $7.95 each and they are in the top 10 list - positions 10, 9, and 5 respectively. Maybe you fix your lists, maybe your friends fix their lists, maybe other adult retailers fix their lists, but at the empire we do not fix our lists. If you are going to make disparaging claims, at least back it up with some evidence.
