Hi to all. As a first time poster I wasn't sure if this should be a separate topic or part of an existing one. A search of the topics in the forum didn't result in discussions about both Adult DVD Marketplace and Paypal.
Through their ticket system, I asked the people at Adult DVD Marketplace (ADM) about accepting payment using Paypal. The response I received was confusing enough for me to raise it as a discussion point here.
Their response was:
"Sorry, but due to the fact that our inventory and prices are constantly changing, we are only able to accept orders that can be transacted immediately over our website via credit card.

Other posts in the forum state that ADM doesn't have any inventory of their own. As for why constantly changing prices would pose a problem is also a mystery. As for immediate transactions, I can only speak about my own experiences with sellers who accept Paypal. As it turns out, when I click on the "Buy Now" button and am redirected to the Paypal site to complete payment, the money is taken from my account immediately.
Maybe Paypal is a horrible company to deal with (for any number of reasons) and that's why ADM don't want to accept payment that way, or maybe it is something else altogether. The point is, this kind of response doesn't help matters.
Does anyone else have any comments on this, or can relate a similar experience on the topic?

I'm guessing that ADM gets a constant stream of updates from sellers and checkouts from buyers. At the point in time that you confirm your order they create the orders to the sellers, decrement the available amount if the seller has posted a quantity available, and issue a credit card authorization request which returns in seconds. If the credit card fails then they can simply call "rollback" on the database to undo all the changes at once. While waiting for the credit card, all the items are locked in the database so any other checkout would wait for the previous checkout to succeed or fail.
With Paypal, they would have to do all the order work in a pending state and then shuttle you off to Paypal. Your transaction with Paypal might take seconds or minutes depending on user input. If Paypal comes back with a failure to approve the fund transfer then all that work has to be undone. You can't use the simple database "rollback" operation because you can't leave the listings locked for more than a second or two. Then there is the question of at what point, when you have not heard back from Paypal, do you assume that the operation has failed?
I'm not sure if the technical difficulty is what you wanted to know. They could probably do it but the implementation gets really sticky, especially when there are multiple sellers, shifting price and availability, and scarce units (think one used copy available). I'm not sure that the business that they gain by accepting Paypal would ever pay for the work to set it up and deal with the ongoing issues. By the way, Paypal now accepts payments for adult products when shipping physical goods but they do not allow you to fill a virtual account (if that was your next suggestion).
Again, I don't have specific knowledge of how ADM handles orders but I'm usually a good guesser.

Thanks for the info XRentWebmaster. I wasn't referring to the technical difficulty in my original post, but as I hadn't considered that, it was good info you provided.
Considering I've read a number of posts in other threads where buyers had placed their orders, only to be contacted by the seller at some point later on telling them that one or more of their selections wasn't available and would they mind selecting another, I'm sure those buyers wouldn't have been too pleased that what they thought was a "done deal" was in fact not. I will say that I can't remember what the dates on those posts were, so this may be an issue that has since been sorted out. So, even though the buyers had handed over their credit card info, and the authorisation had been given by the credit card companies, some of them didn't end up receiving all their selections.
However, your explanation of how things might (and probably do) occur in the process of a sale at ADM, highlighted one aspect that I hadn't thought about in detail. With a credit card, buyers authorise ADM to *take* the funds for the sale, whereas with Paypal (regardless of whether it is funded by a linked credit/debit card, or by an existing Paypal balance) buyers would authorise Paypal to *give* the funds to ADM for the sale. I can imagine that ADM could implement this in a different way by informing buyers who choose Paypal at checkout time, that order confirmation with the sellers will not occur until Paypal authorisation has been received. But I guess ADM have a complex enough system to deal with, without making it even more complex.
A pity really, as I'm just one more person who is becoming more and more wary of handing over credit/debit card information online, and that's where all this stems from.
However, none of what has been said so far relieves ADM from the comments they provided to my initial enquiry, unless they have absolutely sorted out the issue where a buyer can select an item for purchase, and the seller can then fail to provide it to the buyer. I'm certainly not saying it's ADM's fault if this happens (as they aren't the ones holding the stock), but they shouldn't imply that their current system is in place because it is the only system that can work (especially if it still has minor issues from a buyer's perspective).
I, personally hope they do eventually decide to introduce new payment methods (such as Paypal), if they see that there's a demand for it. You are definitely correct about whether it would be worth it for them to do so. I'm sure if you ask Paypal, the only answer from them would be "Of course it is!". I believe that only the buyers can drive this change. To any others out there who would want this too, I guess letting ADM (or whomever else you want to purchase from that doesn't currently accept Paypal) know would be a good start. ADM are most likely too busy taking care of day to day business and other issues, to do any of their own market research on this.
On the issue of Paypal now accepting payments for physical products of adult material, I didn't know that they previously didn't. I'm not certain I understand what you mean by filling "a virtual account", so I'm going to assume you mean "downloads" of adult material (whether it be a download that you can keep and watch as many times as you can, or whether it be a subscription based download of adult material). I didn't know that currently Paypal doesn't allow for that. Not that it matters to me at this time, as I'm interested in purchasing physical discs, but I have seen that some of the titles I'm interested in aren't available for sale by any seller (and might never be again, who knows?) so downloads might be the only way to obtain them. Hmmm.
