Okay, I gotta spit this out because it is really bothering me.
Recently I have been becoming very attracted to a girl who I have been spending most of my time with and consider a friend.
I have always had a policy not to have crushes on friends, but for the first time I can't really help it.
Being the honest type of person that I am I spoke with her about how I felt and she was very receptive. Now this sounds all well and good, where I start having problems is with how old she is. I'm 21, she is 17 (turns 18 at the end of the month) she and my sister are in some of the same high school classes. The idea that I am attracted to someone who is my sisters age is really bothering me.
What sort of age differences have you had in your relationships?
Am I worrying about this too much? As in should I just relax and let what will happen happen?
All of the women who I have ever been close to have been older then me, and that is what I feel used-to and comfortable with.
Or maybe I'm just thinking too much because it has been some time since I have had crush on anyone.
Anyhow, any advice or insight from you friendly people would probably make me feel better.

You're worrying about it too much.
Age difference is a relative things. At 18 you probably wouldn't even dream of dating a 14 year old. You're now 21 and concerned about someone that is almost 18. At 30 you wouldn't think twice about amorous thoughts with a 24 year-old. At 40 or 50, a ten year split is almost meaningless.
And I'll also tell you this. Many real romantic relationships that last can easily start off as frienships. Have fun... go where it takes you and it'll work if it works. :)
In my case, both are true. My wife is 3 years younger than I, and we were good friends for about a year before we became a couple.

Thanks for your thoughts (everyone) and I feel less nervous about this. This girl and I are going to go watch Ichi the Killer tonight and I'm excited.
Mister Lyons, what you said was especially helpful.
lindi, about people being attracted to my sister; the idea bugs me quite a bit, I feel rather protective about her and I know how men behave, which is why I want to keep her sheltered. I know this is ridiculous though, she has to grow up on her own and it would be a dis-service to her to try to protect her from the harsh realities of life.
You see, the girl in question fortunately has no big and scary older brother, but I imaging if she did her brother would take none too kindly to an older guy who was interested in his younger sister. So I end up seeing my self in kind of the reverse of this scenerio, I hope you understand what I mean because I am finding it tough to explain.
I had a three hour conversation with her mother today and it went very well, she was not the slightest bit offended by me or my past and she actually wanted to hear creepy adult book store stories, I'm taking it as a good sign. She is a straight-off-the-boat Japanese woman and she insisted that I come over for dinner as soon as possible. She wants to cook Korean bar-be-cue and eat sushi with me. As an aside I had fun trying to explain what the english expression "checkered past" meant to a non-native english speaker.
Appearently someone has turned up the power to my weirdness magnet.
My 'significant other' is 27 years younger. She has no problems with the age difference and neither have I - so far! Thankfully I'm a year or two younger than her father..a professional wrestler by trade!
I think it's nothing to worry about. Especially since you both are college-age. I think 30 - 19 could be a little difficult (Lord knows, I've tried that one! ). And 37-23 -- nah! But 37-26 rocked. But it's much more to do with who you are, and your interests and your emotional maturity.
Hear's a rule of thumb that I use to avoid self delusion, half your age then add 7 years, That a smart women told me once and somehow it always sounds about right.
My fiancee is three years older than me, which obviously has never bothered me one bit.

If any of you care for an update....
I thought I was overwhelming (sic?) her for about a week so I decided not to call her for a day or two. She got angry at me, so I guess I see where where we stand.
People and society as a whole get WAY, WAY, WAY too hung up about "chronological age". And anyway, a three year age difference is NOTHING.
Besides women more or less the same age as me (e.g. the wife's 3 years younger), over the years I've dated a woman who was 9 years YOUNGER than me, one who was 10 years OLDER and another woman 19 (that's NINETEEN!) years OLDER.
And I can honestly say that in none of these cases did the age difference matter one jot. It's not the dates on your birth certificate that matter, it's whether or not you "groove" with the other person.

an even better update.
I have had a terrific day today.
I woke up and the girl was knocking on my door, we were sitting on the the couch watching a movie and I decided to "try my luck". So, I kissed her on the cheek, once I did that; she grabbed me by the head and started kissing me, I guess she was waiting for me to do something and I was scared. I spend between 3:00 and 7:00 making out today (amongst other tongue related things), my tongue hurts.
Life is wonderful.
I have never been so happy about going down on a girl. It's an odd feeling when that is *all* you want to do.
Anyway, especially thanks to MLyons, about let friedship go where it will, because it did.
I'll keep you all updated, just got off the phone with her mom talking about the Silver Surfer.
I can't speak from personal experience but both my parents(divorced)were involved in relationships like that:
My dad had a long term relationship wih a lady at least 12 years younger than he was.And my mother married a guy at least 10-12 years younger.
There may be issues with maturity or where you life is going and where your head is,depending on what you want out of the relationship, but if it works who cares.......
This is sort of related to this topic. It made me think of it.
I've been involved with people much older than me (I was just freshly turned 18 and he was 42). I've been involved with people a little bit younger than me (I was 24, he was just freshly turned 18). Neither meant much, and neither lasted long, but I had fun with both.
On to the bit that doesn't necessarily relate to the topic. I have noticed that overall I am attracted to men (women is a different story) at a specific age. They should be 36 years old. Period. How old I am doesn't seem to matter. When I was younger I was a bit freaked out about my yen for such "old" men, and I wondered if I had some weirdo hang-up. Now I'm older, and I had thought I'd be looking at even older men, but I'm not. I still like them right around 36.
I joke around that this is the age of ripeness for men, they don't really wake up and start growing up until they're 30. But at 30 they're in emotional shock from the realisation, and it takes a few years for it to wear off. Any thoughts?
Btw, consquistador - congrats. I hope you have a blast.
an age difference doesn't mean anything for me as long as you understand one another. a really good friendship with your significant other is very important. my boyfriend is 31 going to be 32 and im 19 turning 20. we have a great time in and out of the bedroom. he's my best friend we talk and share everything together. anyway don't let age come between your true feelings for one another.

Hello, and thanks for making an insecure question of mine into such a popular topic.
Things seem to be good, in case anyone cares.
I went to her family's house on Wednesday for her 18th birthday and got along splendidly with her mother and father, little sister too.
It seems that I am the first boy she has *ever* been with and I am finding it rather demanding. ie: she'll go down on me, then apologize for not knowing what she's doing. She doesn't get it (yet) that it's not *what* she's doing, it's that *she* is who's doing it. As in, it doesn't matter to me that she feels like she's being sloppy, I'm eccstatic(sp?) that she's into me at all.
I had a friend with a similar problem and he was really embarrassed about the age difference which was a little larger than yours. Now, 15 years later, with 2 kids, his wife looks like Jessica Lange and he looks like Goofy. I am not kidding. But he is a great dad and his wife is a total doll. Really nice people.
I also knew a couple in NY. He was Italian and 50, she was Jewish and 25. They had great sex---which they used to tell us all about, (please guys.) And to top it off her grandmother was worth hundreds of millions of dollars and they were afraid if she ever knew the girl would be disinherited. Turns out granny approved of the lucky bastard. Of course, now he is in his 60s and she is probably still under 40. Hey, it's Bob Dole time.
Okay no one else found this a bit odd for a date movie?Okay I dont mean to sound like an ass or "thread crap', but announcing to the world (or at least the ADT community) that you have committed a felony in most states doesnt seem like the best course of action. That actually makes a lot of sense.
Personally, I don't vibe off younger girls, I like really smart girls, preferably close to my age. I like having a shared pop culture awareness. If they don't know who Captain Planet is, they can hit the road.
CQ - I followed this link from the other thread. Figured I'd respond here instead of dragging it into the other thread. When I was 21, my GF was 17. She came onto me and I really liked her so I didn't think much of it. Anyway. Glad you're doing OK with her.

She will turn 22 and I will turn 26 this year. It matters less and less each year.
She got 'angry" at you for not calling for a day or two? Well, she is showing her age for sure. Other than some small bumps in the road( like this one), your age 'difference" is not that unmanagable. Good luck.
Once both parties are legal age, it's up to them to work it out. A lot of people get too hung up on the numbers and miss out on some really good times. Sometimes an age gap is too wide, sometimes it actually helps because you have lots of things to talk about that aren't quite familiar. Me, I've been pretty lucky over the years. When I was 41, I got to get naked with the 19 yo daughter of two of my high school classmates while she was between relationships. (The reunions will be a lot more fun I am sure.) Last year I met someone new and we hit it off immediately to the point where we're talking future arrangements. I liked her from the get-go but she asked me out first, so go figure. I'm 45, she's 29, and she actually likes the difference because she's a bit of an intellectual and I can fake it. Plus I still stay hard as a teenager for hours.
Disappointed would have been a better thing to say. If yo spend your time nonstop with someone for a few days then to test the waters you don't call them disappointment would have made more sense to say then anger. Sorry.
