We just got this book at work, and I've read the first 4 chapters. So far I haven't found a single sentence I've disagreed with.
The Layguide: How to Seduce Women More Beautiful Than You Ever Dreamed Possible
I've been a member of this forum for almost 2 years, and I've seen many posts from male members that reflect the belief that a man can't attract a woman unless he looks a certain way, makes enough money, or holds a certain status. This book debunks all that, and it reenforces everything all the female members of ADT have been telling you. Looks, money and status don't matter. It's confidence, stupid!
Maybe you men will believe it coming from another man, and the author of this book has figured women out. Whether you're single, or simply want to get the best out of your current relationship, buy it, read it, live it. Now.

The problem is that a man who seems confident but has no basis for it often seems crazy and is just making a fool out of himself. It's like a pimped Yugo. It's not fooling anyone. Confidence requires positive reinforcement. It doesn't just come out of nowhere. Women only tend to give positive reinforcement to men they're actually attracted to. You can sit all day long and tell yourself why you should be confident but if you're the only one saying it, it's extremely difficult to convince yourself.

Here's an example from the book. A man says that his options with women are limited because he's balding. Truth is, it's not the lack of hair, it's the lack of confidence that repels women. Because a guy is unhappy with his noggin, it affects other aspects of his appearance, such as his facial expressions, his posture, even his walk. And because he thinks the baldness is the source of his failure with women, he gives up on the rest of his looks. He doesn't bother dressing appropriately for places and occasions. He might not groom as well as he should, or get what hair he does have trimmed often enough.
The thing is, when women see this man, they don't notice his bald head right away. They see a slouchy, unkempt, sloppy man, who also happens to be bald. They see a guy who doesn't think he's worth looking as good as he can, and more importantly, they think he doesn't care about looking as good as he can for the women around him.
So the idea is, a guy will pick one specific feature that he dislikes about himself, and he'll translate it to everything else. It's a defeatist attitude.
So this author advocates doing the best with what you have, love the things about yourself that really are great, and project the image of a guy that repects himself. And if you really don't repect yourself, fake it. Dress the part. Act like a guy worth talking to, and eventually you'll feel like that guy.
Self talk can work both ways. We all know how easy it is to talk ourselves into feeling shitty about just about anything. It really does work. Lie to yourself enough, and you can believe any rotten thing about yourself. It works the other way, too.
Anyway, the confidence coaching is only part of the book. The rest is step-by-step techniques for getting laid, and it teaches how to read signals from women. Couldn't hurt to read it.

Confidence? Are you trying to tell me that's all that's been standing between me and my golden haired goddess of a co-worker? To that, ladies and gentlemen, I say bullshit. No disrespect meant.

I'm saying I've read a portion of this book, and that the insights about women and their perceptions of men seem to be spot-on. If you don't want to expose yourself to new ideas or to take a calculated risk, don't. For all I know, your golden haired goddess of a co-worker has a boyfriend already, or she's a lesbian. One of the things I've read so far is the old adage that there are plenty of fish in the sea, and there are lots of Mrs. Right-Now's out there. They're not all Mrs. Right, but some of them are pretty great and if you put yourself out there among them in the right way, you might have a little bit of fun.
I'm really surprised at the response I've gotten from this book recommendation. I don't understand how you guys can reject something outright without even considering giving it a chance. Even if only one chapter resonates with you or applies to your life, isn't it worth a look? [o\|]
That said, I really like most of you guys, and some of you have expressed degrees of unhappiness or frustration that I believe you don't deserve. You're a great bunch of guys, and I think you all deserve the best. My aim was to share something with you that I found novel and encouraging, something I've never seen presented in this particular manner. I've done that.

Oh! I just realized something very important that I left out. The book doesn't say that you can seduce "any woman you want." It says, you can seduce lots of beautiful women. It's not the formula for catching one specific woman. It's the formula for increasing your odds of getting laid by any number of possible women. Sorry. Forgot to mention that.

I'm sorry. I understand what you're trying to do here. And it means a lot. Really. And yes. It means something to hear things from a woman's POV.
The thing is that most of us who have low self esteem and lack of confidence weren't always that way. We got that way by being too confident in the first place and getting our egos crushed to dust every solitary time we tried to assert ourselves. It starts to smart after a while. It's simple cause and effect. Your confidence is directly proportional to the response you get. Believe it or not, I've had some brutal responses when I just went after what I wanted. One chick completely humiliated me in front of all of our coworkers just because I told her she was attractive. I still cringe to think of it.

Pagoda, let me ask you this: imagine you are single, you've met a guy, been out a few times and then one day back at his apartment you see this book lying around - do you admire him for trying to improve his lot in the dating game or do you start to question his sincerity and wonder if you have been manipulated?
If the situation were reversed the outcome would be in little doubt. If a guy found a copy of The Rules (say) at a girl's place, she'd probably never see him again.
I think most men have a visceral reaction against both anyone who uses these sort of books and anyone who falls for their ploys. Such a cold and cynical approach to matters of the heart seems verging on the inhuman.
Maybe for women employing such books doesn't seem any more an act of deceit than wearing make-up or any of the other little ploys in that odd game of men and women where the only rules are both sides are expected to cheat and honesty isn't playing the game.
I guess men are more romantic in their hopes for an essential honesty in human relationships.

I did think about saying "find this book squirreled away" or "stuffed down the side of a chair" or something like that but I didn't feel I needed to make the scene that picturesque to get my point across. Sorry if you felt deprived of scenic colour.

Miss the scenic colour? Not really. It's hard not to poke fun when you've just read something both as maudlin and as self-congratulatory as this:
Boo hoo.
Dating is just dating. Honesty and sincerity are exemplified in a relationship over the long haul, not over the first couple of beers.

My summation is that these books teach men the same kind of principles that women were born with. Sort of like a "Sense Of Direction" or a "How to Throw Properly" book for women.
I am Sir Kensington Chapp, and I will teach you all the best and most fool-proof way to bed lots of beautiful women; give them money.

The best "playa" advice I ever heard was on The Shield; some pimp says to Dutch-boy, "Every woman has a hole in her heart, and it's connected to the hole between her legs. You gotta figure out what that hole in her heart is, and fill it. Within seconds you'll be filling her other too, yawl know what I'm sayin'?"
Apparently, this guy got a hot MILF to become his personal slut and pro by telling her that's how to prove she's still got it. Or something.

I had my fun and that's all that matters.

I agree with the basic premise of the book Pagoda linked to but obviously physical appearance and personal hygiene are extremely important when it comes to hooking up with hot chicks. A guy could have all the confidence in the world but if he stinks to high heaven, has cystic acne, or very bad breath, he's not getting laid. Girls will either be repulsed by these types of guys or feel sorry for them. Confidence is key but if you wanna be successful with women, clean yourself up, lose weight, get your teeth fixed, get contact lenses, do whatever it takes to make yourself more presentable and attractive. Once you've accomplished that, the rest is easy. Bottom line: girls don't wanna be with slobs who are too lazy to put any effort into their looks.

Do men really find it this hard to hook up? I just get caught up in conversations with women all the time and that usually lead to flirting and then what have you; maybe I'm more 'confident' than I thought.
Although, when I was younger I did find that once I had my first steady girlfriend more women seemed interested in me; probably because when I was talking to them I didn't give off the 'desperate vibe,' since I wasn't thinking the entire time about how to fuck them.

That depends on how badly you want to hook up and when you need to see some results. As you say, if you're not desperate, you'll eventually "get lucky" which is precisely where the term came from. If you don't need the sex anytime within the next couple of months or so, it's not too difficult. But the minute you appear desperate or try to go even slightly faster than she wants to go, you've just fucked it all to hell.

Trouble there, B6, is that one could easily fall into the dreaded (*lowers voice*) Friend Trap.
I too, have found it much easier to connect and chat with women when I've had a steady girlfriend. It's the fact that the thought of there being potential to bang this chick doesn't cross my mind. So that takes away the awkwardness and apparent desparationess (Is that a word? It is now).
Someone once said, the best way to try and meet women (when you're single) is to jack off before you go out, so you're not walking around with a fully-loaded weapon that needs discharge.
This stems from the fact that men lose interest in sex immediately after release (at least when you're not in bed with an insanely hot chick and have fired off regularly of recent times).
The problem with that, for me, is I lose interest in just about everything after release - so wasting time chatting to women is out of the question.

I had my fun and that's all that matters.

Good points on both sides. I can definitely agree with RP's comments on losing confidence, but at the same time I can see a lot of what the book is saying too. Please correct me if I'm wrong here, ladies, but I think it's one of the reasons a lot of women find guys who are dating somebody or married more attractive. It isn't a physical thing so much as a confidence thing where many guys can feel more free and confident to be themselves rather than being brought down with the doubt that goes along with some of the pressure of dating.
