I am one for being annoyed when performances don't look that real, when the women in a porn video don't seem actually turned on. Porn is very stylized sex, and technology should be able to replicate those performances as 99% of porn performances are *already* in the uncanny valley.

Do we really want the open warfare that would (or rather, "will") go on as anything you upload gets scanned for probability matches against every celebrity or royal figure who's ever lived? All the hoops we'd have to jump through just to get anything done online? Honestly, when that day comes, I'd rather go back to CompuServe and a pile of old Penthouses.

I've played around a lot with both text-to-image and text-to-text tools over the last year, and the limitations become obvious after a while. They are unable to utilise and develop ideas, which is something central to any creative work. They do have some important uses for things like search tools, text summarising, graphics assistance and stuff like that, so I'm not discounting the tech completely, but generating a whole movie or novel in a single click? Never going to happen. The best you will get is an output of that length but with no real internal consistency or through line. The overhead required to process and integrate the prior generated context scales exponentially, which is why the current tech uses fairly short windows. GPT4 can do 24k words, for which it requires an absolutely absurd amount of tensor power and electricity. That's about 48 pages of text, including what the user has input. It's not able to spit that out in one go, either. Significant human input is required to get that many words out of the model, so you're looking at about 30 pages max. In practice, once you've generated more than about 5 pages the model is talking in circles, repeating itself with the same stock phrases and basically producing garbage.

Anyway, I'm at risk of doing the same myself so I think I will just finish by saying: don't believe the hype, people will always be needed in the creation of art including pornography, and who the heck wants to live in a world where all of the fun stuff is made by robots and the rest of us just toil endlessly at the robot factory? Not me, chum.

Anyway, I gave it a read. Not too much surprising information, but many interesting things nevertheless.

-- The story opens with an amusing anecdote, where a 72 year old retired teacher flew from Omaha to Las Vegas to attend AVN show specifically to meet Jill Kassidy. They talked for 10 minutes and he gave her a vape as a gift. The point is that people such as him may be a dying breed.

-- In this story mostly about the coming AI, it also talked about the two past "revolutions" that devastated traditional studios/websites. The reporter spoke to someone named Steven Jones who also goes by Lightspeed, who owned 30 websites during the 2000s (I don't know him; perhaps others here do?), but was completely driven out of business by pornhub by 2013 (he's actually trying to make a comeback using AI). They also talked to Peter Acworth who owns Kink.com. The article said its revenue peaked at $30 million per year before Onlyfans, but had now fallen to $12 million.

-- One of the key challenges to those trying to make AI porn is to prevent abusive images from being generated or circulated ("content that depicts violence, rape, sex with children or a celebrity -- or even a crush from work who never consented to appear"). Both Jones and Acworth are working on AI generated porn, and both say this is a huge challenge that is very difficult to meet. For example, human moderation may be required, but if so, this can get very costly, so the whole business may be unviable.

-- This may be a particularly difficulty for BDSM porn. Acworth specifically said he's trying to build an AI that can distinguish subtle differences like "the difference between torture and consensual sexual bondage."

-- AI porn faces many of the same challenges as non-porn AI generated content. For example, these AIs need training from existing images and videos, whose owners don't necessary agree.

-- The article mentioned the recently concluded mainstream actor strike and newly signed union contract that contained provisions about using AI likeness. The reporter talked to Mark Spiegler, who says he gets multiple inquiries a week about buying or licensing his clients' AI likeness, but Spiegler poured cold water on similar things happening in porn since there's no such union.

-- Apparently multiple AI porn companies had set up booths at the AVN show trying to sign up performers. It seems these are not necessarily doing de novo AI generated porn, but trying to build "bots" based on the likeness of existing performers. The reporter talks about Jenna Starr who spoke to one such company only to walk away with more question than answers. In other words, more hype than substance, at least for now, even just to build bots.

The article posted which said that Kink.com's revenue dropped from $30 million to $12 million per year leaves me wondering how typical this is and whether the decline will continue. Though $12 million still seems like a high income compared to what most workers make, I don't know if this is the net profit after expenses or if it's before production expenses.

However, that is not really the main draw of AI porn. The point is for the consumer to "custom order" one on demand. If that day comes to pass, then the consumer will have to pay the licensing fee (to the company that runs the AI, who will then pay the performer).

If the AI creates a "person" that's not any existing actual performer? That's when things really get tricky.

As for the $12 million, I think that's revenue, not profit. I suspect Kink got hit particularly hard by OF because their audience is probably more niche and therefore more self-motivated, so may well gravitate toward more specialized forums faster, whereas the audience for more generic porn are less motivated to seek out highly specific things, and are probably more content to stay with studios. But that's just a hypothesis. None of these are publicly traded companies, so no one knows their financials.

You wondered if the decline will continue. The article says the $12 million is "stagnant" so it seems to imply this has bottomed out.

Video games are a good example. These are becoming more and more realistic over the years. But at the same time, increasingly powerful computers or a new generation of consoles are needed.

1. Completely AI generated video, of a type that are comparable to studio-produced videos, is still pretty speculative and likely years in the future.

2. AI generated still images, however, is rapidly become a more mature technology, though it still has some problems -- some visual details are often wrong, sexual images (two people interacting rather than a single person) are probably still quite difficult to do, and is probably still pretty expensive to do.

3. AI generated chat, however, is getting to a very advanced level.

As I mentioned previously, Adult Time has just introduced a AI-chat feature. I have written a pretty complete report of my first experience with it in another thread. If you are interested, you can give it a read. Basically, this feature combines image generation and chat. You can request variations of on an existing image, so this likely saves cost and speeds up the processing time. The text chat is really good -- or maybe my expectations are too low? I can easily imagine that still image generation will get better, and we may soon get at least short snippets of AI videos mixed in. If so, does that begin to intrude upon the "parasocial" specialty of OnlyFans?

Anyway, another piece of AI-related news: there is an AI beauty pageant now, where people can submit their own "Miss AI" creations as contestants. In a very meta move, 2 of the 4 judges are themselves AI creations. I have to say though for all the (theoretical) creative possibilities opened up by AI, the outcomes are pretty disappointing: both "Aitana Lopez" and "Emily Pellegrini" are pretty conventional looking.
