Am I being watched?

More to the point, are we being watched by the government?

Yesterday, I received on of the plastic "sorry we damaged your mail" bags from the Post Office. Thing is, the mail inside wasn't damaged. What was inside was even more disturbing. Someone had taken my monthly subscription copy of Adam Film World -- which is shipped in a black poly mailing packet -- and carefully slit open one end so they could remove the contents and see what was inside.

And I do mean "carefully." These poly mailers to not tear easily or cleanly. If this had truly been damaged by Post Office equipment, it would not have been a perfectly clean cut along one edge exactly from end-to-end, no more, no less.

Has this happened to anyone else here?

Are they targeting me and/or the magazine and/or the publisher?

Am I paranoid...

You are wearing a white shirt and you are sitting behind your computer right now. Am I right or am I right?

I believe the booby prize Steph has sent to me has fulfilled the needs of all the postal workers of the the US Postal Service. She posted it in early July. It arrived here just a couple of weeks ago... and the DVDs were all glued together. Draw your own conclusions.

If you have the choice of attributing blame for any adverse state of affairs to either an organised conspiracy or one incompetent (and horny) public servant, I'd opt for the randy/thieving postal worker every time.

Always gives me a creepy feeling when something has been opened and resealed by HM Customs.

However, I find myself in agreement with our resident Frank Zappa fan ...

perhaps yours was on top when they carelessly cut into the box?

More than likely your name has been added to the Porn Industry Consumers List (PICL). Expect to be abducted in a few weeks and forced to watch Lawrence Welk a la Clockwork Orange. You'll be farting love and happiness by Christmas.

This hasn't happened to me with DVDs or my PLAYBOY subscription, but it HAS happened to me with a recent issue of AVN...a few months ago, in fact.

I have received open porn boxes and envelopes multiple times in the last year. I just got one of those plastic sorry bags last week, and the porn was visible(Sineplex Pushers, for God's sake!).

My mailbox is such that you can see into it when DVD sized packages are in it because they push the lid open. So, all my neighbors were able to see my porn.

I thought about this when it first happened, and it only happens when the packages aren't sealed as well as they should be. I think it's accidental in my case. Or, it was the first time, and now the postal workers know to look in my packages for hot porn, lol.

+1 What Steph said

It's a very good possibility that the packaging was not sealed properly at the factory. If the machine that cuts/melts the package shut isn't hot enough or whatever, the packaging can pretty much just fall open. I've seen this happen to non-porn magazines like my video game mags.

This is the precise reason I won't even read the posts in the "dvd trading" forum, much less consider swapping around used porn discs.

I don't think that you're being paranoid. I heard that the laws passed after 9/11 allow the post office to open any piece of mail they deem to be 'suspicious'. I've had my own problem with the postal service. Right after 9/11, I shipped a rhinestone necklace in a bubble wrap package to someone and it never got there.

sorry but i have to disagree, i believe they need a Federal warrant to open US mail. now it may be easier to get said warrant but they need it none the less. i've had stuff stolen from my mail both before and after 9/11. on the other hand fedex and ups are more than happy to help the Feds out.

It's 2005, spooks don't need to intercept your mail. BigBobxxx, you and the rest of us on this forum are flagged 'Person of Interest' as GirlinDC would say.

No. Every time I mail something via "media mail", the clerk informs me that the package is subject to be open and inspected. I don't know if that also applies to first class or other forms, but I would assume it does.

I just had a thought about gay DVD traders. On second thought, there are ladies present!

With media mail, they can open it to make sure you're not misusing the media rate. Lots of people tell them it's media mail and it's not really. Books, magazines, movies...are media main, once you add a letter or card, it no longer qualifies as media mail, it will be first class. I deal with this almost every day at my store, and i get to deal with the post office every day too....as for the magazine that was opened, I see lotsa of magazines come in with one end of the poly bag opened, almost like it was never sealed.

Thanks for the responses.
There is no doubt about what I received.
Someone deliberately took a pair of scissors and cut the end of the poly mailer open. You can even see the little serrated marks left by the scissor blades.

Side note -- upon asking at the post office, I was told that magazines are NOT permitted as media mail, since they contain advertising. They have to be mailed parcel post, priority, etc.

They are not media, but rather 'periodicals' so large companies can mail them cheaply at a bulk rate that is not available to individuals.
