Hey folks,
I just watched American Desire last night, and while I'm hesitant to indulge in hyperbole, I thought it was possibly the best adult film I've seen. Maybe I was just in the right mood, but goddamn it was good. In particular, the screenplay, music (drums in particular), acting, direction, structure (narrative/sex scene), and locations. Oh, wait, that's pretty much everything. Oh wait, the cars were awesome too.
Anyway, here is my nerdtastic query - a big gold star to anyone who can answer this: what is the kun-fu movie Veronica Hart and R. Bolla are watching at the opening of the film?

This might be worth a silver star - screen shots of the TV showing the movie. A Japanese film aficionado might be able to ID it from these. (They were out of focus in the original film).

I doubt it was a 'Kung Fu" movie but may have been a Japanese Classic and the segment shown was a battle scene or the rescue of a Princess.
BTW, I would agree with your assessment - "...possibly the best adult film I've seen." were it not for the casting of R. Bolla in the lead and allowing Jack Teague to even appear on the set. .
A truly sad destruction of what could have been an outstanding Veronica Hart film.

Jack Teague was her dad? Yeah, I can see the problem, but he was a fine actor I thought. I admit to cracking a few jokes about his crack though.
Also, I was on the fence about Bolla at the beginning, but then I had a sort of shift in perspective - maybe this is me reading too much into it, but it felt as though he was quite cleverly playing his role as a guy who acted confident and daring, yet was really cheesy and was settled into a narrow-minded view of what sexual exploration was (as evidenced by not being entirely willing to dabble in things outside of his comfort zone). The cheese factor came into clear focus for me when he said that line to the hitchhiker about the joint - "That's definitely not a cigarette!" This is the kind of thing an older man might say, thinking it's cool. Oh, just realised, maybe you were talking about his physical appearance?
Anyway, major kudos to you for getting screen shots! I'm impressed. So yes, gold nerd star for aiding in my mission.

Yeah! Both were pretty good actors. But extremely distracting in physical appearance in a porn film can make the 'fantasy' a real reach, especially when you have such attractive and talented actresses.
What was the casting director thinking? Not many actors can act their way out of "ugly" standing next to Veronica Hart, Mai Lin and Lysa Thatcher.

It's a tricky one - I hate it when I'm taken out of the film-fantasy-world by impossibly beautiful people. In addition, if someone is a terrible actor, it spoils the film for me. I think having Bolla and Teague in the film gave the whole thing some credibility, even if you didn't like seeing their butts too much. Veronica Hart is beautiful and a wonderful actress, but still looks like a real person - she's the best of both worlds for me. I guess Jamie Gillis and John Leslie would be the male equivalent.
A contrast to Teague is George Payne, who I thought was a hottie, but struggled in the acting department, especially as he was performing alongside some true heavyweights. Physically, though, he was great. I guess it all depends on how you approach adult film.

I tend to lean towards Gore Gore's assessment of this one; AMERICAN DESIRE is a wonderful xxx movie that's actually about sexual relationships, not just a bunch of sex scenes pasted into some sort of genre picture. R. Bolla seems to be a good fit for this role; a hunkier guy might not be as believable. In other words, out of the crop of actors around at the time, R. Bolla is a pretty good choice. Hey Robert, who would you have rather seen in this role? Someone like Jamie Gillis or John Leslie might have been a bit too much on the hunky, suave side. Imagine Bobby Astyr in that role!---T0M

Bobby Astyr has ruined enough of Veronica Hart's films. I don't know which one (Bolla or Asyr) holds the record, but IMHO both of them made a mess of many of Hart's films.
How about Eric Monti?
It's too bad that when you need a male jerk a director doesn't have much to choose from. Then again there aren't many porno movies with speaking parts that call for a male jerk.

Haven't seen this one yet but I really liked Sensations, is this the R1 release Gore Gore? How is the image quality?

^ A friend of mine loaned me a copy, so I'm not 100% (don't worry, I'm buying it within the next week), but I'm pretty sure it's R1 because they had sections that had clearly been dubbed over, probably because of poor sound. Aside from these rather jarring moments (where the mouth movements don't match the audio) the quality was impressive. Plus, these mouth/audio mismatches were during foreplay scenes where it didn't matter as much as, say, a Veronica Hart monologue.
You should bear in mind, though, that I'm not an expert on these things, and I have a curious attraction to bad copies (I enjoy the blips and skips). That said, I don't think American Desire had any of these flaws - it looked gorgeous, but then again maybe the New York/Connecticut oceanscapes were distractingly breathtaking.
I would say definitely pick up a copy at your earliest convenience. There were portions of the film during which I was literally speechless (and I usually have a lot to say). Then, following the film - a time where I'm a complete chatterbox - I didn't know what to say. It felt like nothing I could say would do it justice, and that I had a lot to think about first.

I agree with you 100%, and as much as I adore John Leslie and Jamie Gillis, they wouldn't have been right for the part. I mean, do these guys strike you as being hesitant to get down with whips and chains??

Thanks Gore Gore, I'm not a stickler on quality, I'd rather have the film available than not, but it's good to know what I'm getting going in.

I have the Excalibur VHS to DVD conversion (streaming, no menus, extras, etc.) produced from the original VHS release and the quality is quite good (typical VHS softness).
American Desire
This version was released in 2002 (original VHS released in 1981) and is still available (purchase, rent, exchange) from Excalibur. I think that same Caballero release is available from XRent
