It's really frustrating because there are so many stars who either, never shot in hd, or have most of their career in standard definition. I've gotten so used to the detail and the clarity of the HD stuff, it doesn't feel right watching non HD stuff. I wish they would remaster all the old stuff like they do in TV.

HD, changes a lot the visual appeal of an adult scene.
The more clear and detailful it is the better outcome it has. In fact this is very important to say because there are many free low quality tubes in the internet who look a lot better in higher definition.
There are many many hot scenes shot in SD or in VHS quality that need to be remastered. Still, the remastering procedure takes time and costs. Plus, it doesn't always guarantee the quality of HD. Some of the picture data is lost and is not easy to be recovered.
Nevertheless, it would be a pity to abandon all this hot old stuff. It is not a matter of poor visual effects and lame scripts like in mainstream cinema. Porn is never gets out of fashion because it is more about sex and beauty and there were many many beautiful starlets in the past with excellent performances. So yes I believe that once you have the good first material it wouldn't be wasted to invest on improving the visual quality.

It all depends on when the erotic images were first made.
Early man used a piece of charcoal, to sketch images of nude women on the walls of caves.
Films were first made without sound.
Trying to format old images into new forms of media is difficult.
I like to watch those old, classic porn features, shot on film, just to remind myself that beauty is timeless.

No. The only resolution I struggle with is 240p (incredibly, there are still sites offering scenes in this res, which I think is borderline unwatchable). 360p and above is fine by me.
I wonder if, when 4K takes off, there'll be people saying "Oh, I can't watch 1080p any more..."? LOL.

^I can live with 360p but 480p is the bare minimum if I want to really enjoy the scene. If I have a choice then I usually look for 540p or 720p. I find that anything below 480p is usually hard to see. I agree with StarGrek that HD changes to visual appeal of the scene but in my case I find that it usually reduces it. The drop in visual appeal is proportional to the visible skin blemishes highlighted by the HD level of resolution on the performer. Razor burns, ass pimples and other skin blemishes can't ort of be overlooked on lower resolution videos but good look when you are seeing it in 1080P HD. I can't imagine what 4K porn looks like and I have no wish to do so.

I have a lot of pre-HD videos and DVDs that I watch regularly, so I wouldn't say that HD is a sticking point for me.

If I'm looking for new porn, I don't even bother with anything less than 1080p. Technology has advanced so much that things like internet speed and hard drive space really aren't even issues anymore.

After I bought an LCD screen I started throwing out old videos, but what I can see on this screen is probably the peak of what I will see. I don't have the budget to chase every gizmo fad. That is a shrinking market.

I'm more interested in the content (who's the woman and what's she doing/wearing and how are the camera angles/positions) than the video resolution. I can't afford to add HD as a new must-have requirement, as the pool of "watchable" porn is already too small.

And old DVDs from say around 2004-5, the years before HD came fully in, stand out as the best DVD if jampacked value is the concern. You had great behind the scenes that showed everything you could desire with cameras that moved around, and you could get tease dance in the extras. Bringing the strippers home at any given time, so nice, and not having to throw out a big load of bills, but free to shake some balls instead. Really old DVDs from before 2003 often lack good picture quality and that is a sucking fact that only make me happy for the fact that I was a VHS user up until then and not having to deal with it that much.
I have come to the conclusion that great camerawork and good lightning and know-how production with passion for shooting beats HD based on this journey. HD is not a secure quality sign to me. It's only a marker. I'm in no doubt that Digital Sin e.g. produced better DVDs in 2005 than they do now. In fact 2005 beats the shit out of HD.

480p/540p is good enough for me as long as it is well encoded. 720p is generally my standard but for models/performers I'm particularly fond of, I go for 1080p and occasionally 4K.
