Is porn suffering financially because studios aren't targeting the right audience? The vast majority of mainstream porn is male-centric and focused on satisfying the male sexual experience. Given that you can now get HD clips and full DVD content pirated on tube sites, maybe porn needs to shift its content away from focus on the male orgasm as the natural conclusion to something else. I would venture to guess that DVD sales are something over 75% by males. Certainly, far over 50%. If studios are making less each year off of that, maybe a healthier business model for porn is one where at least half of DVD sales are by women. Women account for much more than half of total product purchases, and with their rising business ownership and higher rate of advanced degrees than men, as a group they have higher purchasing power. If my hunch is right about this, porn content would need to be tailored more around topics and scenarios interesting to a female audience (as a man, I could only guess). Things like the storylines, acting and production value in features would certainly need to be better (given what comes out of the indie movie scene, I think this is a matter of directors giving a damn about this...see Graham Travis' "Wasteland" with Lily Carter for a porn example). I'm not talking about "female friendly" which is clearly designed to be a niche within the existing marketplace. I'm talking about a customer base realignment for the major studios...a new way of seeing the porn market and future porn consumers.
Are there any folks in the industry who are currently thinking about this?
All that needs to be done to appeal to those women who already enjoy porn is produce appealing porn, pure and simple! The reason statistics seem to indicate a decline in male porn are the same ones responsible for a lack of increase in female viewership.
I agree it is aimed at the wrong people now. I find it harder and harder to find porn that appeals to me, it seems all rushed and nasty in most cases and aimed at young males who will get it for free on tube sites rather than those adults who will actually pay for movies. Bi movies are a great example. There is little around from what I have seen for bi-couples. It always seems to be 2 guys and a girl or 2 girls and a guy and the term 'bi' doesn't even seem to apply to females, just lesbian or girl girl is used. Every flick with the bi tag seems to be more about gay sex with a female tagging along. My girlfriend likes her porn to have a plot. Another rarity now, aside from badly written parodies that again seem to be aimed at 'kids' (or very immature adults). I mean if all we wanted was some nasty sex and nothing else we'd just go to those tube sites ourselves. I think production companies need to look at who is actually buying their films and what that audience wants. Often adults like myself want a bit of quality when coughing up 50 bucks or more for a DVD and it is really getting more difficult for my partner and I to find anything that actually appeals to us. (especially when every big studio film always seems to use the same 4 male actors and not very handsome males at that. Please if we see Evan Stone or James Dean one more time we will gouge out our own eyeballs, especially when they appear in supposedly 'amateur' videos.) A bit more substance and a bit less spitting cum into each others mouths and stretched open assholes. Porn is no longer sensual and erotic, it's just nasty and dirty in most cases. I'm not about to hand over cash for product that doesn't appeal to me. More films that appeal to both men and women, some kind of middle ground for couples. (and again some variety in male stars) Time to look back at the classic porn of the 70's and 80's that were more than just sex, but were also fun and entertaining to watch. (plus the actors used to look genuinely interested in it and not just there for a pay check like they appear now.) Sex generally takes 2 people at least and porn only works if both parties can watch and enjoy it. Edited by - funky_gibbon on 4/29/2014 1:51:59 AM

A voice in the wilderness, reviewer Den Recob, who reviewed thousands of titles, had similar thoughts as those listed above. I remember one director of a "rough sex" title, in the introduction, giving the finger to any viewer who didn't like it. Who draws the line on acceptable behavior in porn titles? Some dweeb in the F.B.I.? It should be the consumer. Changes are coming to the adult industry, they always have. Demand, in the form of sales, drives production. Build a poor quality product, word gets around and you're out of business. When enough couples buy romantic, vanilla porn, studios will make more of it to watch. If slam, bam, spit, gouge, slap, punch, choke stuff remains popular, they'll continue to provide it. In one form or another, porn will exist, pushing the boundaries past what was acceptable in the past.

I just don't see the female porn customer being as "reliable" for the industry as the average male customer-where many male customers can spend well over $100+ per month between DVDs and membership sites (certainly plenty of these "devoted" customers here on ADT), I imagine the average female porn customer to only be willing to buy like 1 or 2 DVDs a month (whether it's just for themselves or something to enjoy with their partner). It's clear that more and more women are taking an interest to porn, but it's not like they're buying it up as much as the male consumer base of porn.
Women will never be good porn customers because they always want to be paid to have sex, never want to pay for sex. Even for watching, it's unthinkable for a woman to spend money to get aroused because it's opposite to what arouse her. Unless they realy want it. Only a small minority won't mind paying, think about 2% of them. No the problem with the porn industry is the crappy quality of productions and too much focus on degradation, extreme, deviant, dirty, S&M and so on and not on classic erotica 95% of the men would like to see.
For me it starts with the director. Now its become the camera man. Now, the typical film is 5 scenes with the hottest women you can find. And, you would think that you would be a fan of one of those women. Its a shotgun effect. In the past, there were scenes in the film from the director that were just epic. Scenes that made the woman a star. Alex De Renzi's Femmes de Sade, for example.... the engine room scene made Leslie Bovee a star. I think were not seeing good new directors.
> Even for watching, it's unthinkable for a woman to spend money to get aroused because it's opposite to what arouse her. +1 to that. I always found it difficult to accept figures thrown up like "30% of porn watchers are women" and "if only we improve porn more women would watch it". Most of my female co-workers, friends and relatives would express disgust at the mere mention of porn. The truth of the figure is more like 5%.
@shank, @Fid Interesting point. I don't suppose you have any data or market studies to support that, do you? I tend to disagree with you. Women do pay for sex: vibrators/sex toys, male prostitutes and escorts, items for ambiance (scented oils, candles, bubble baths, etc), Erotic art and literature (think romance novels), lingerie and costumes for erotic play, sexy heels, clubbing dresses, "going out" makeup, sexual therapists, and sex education. All of these items result in tens of billions in sales, and all represent avenues for porn-as-it-is to expand into. I'm willing to bet that the biggest reasons women don't buy porn is because porn-as-it-is not only disgusts them with rampant misogyny and totally ignores key elements of the "normal" desired female sexual experience. I think it would be a mistake to simply assume that women want to get off the same way that men do - it actually requires investment in a wider range of stimuli for a similar level of sexual satisfaction as the average man. Plenty of research demonstrates this. This brings me back to my original point, that currently the porn paradigm is the male sexual experience...the formula being 1) Visually stimulate to arousal 2) Visually stimulate to climax 3) Fin. Whereas the female experience might be 1) Physical, emotional comfort 2) Stimulate to arousal by engaging one or more senses 3) Stimulate to climax 4) Repeat as needed 5) Physical, emotional cool-down 6) Fin. In any case, it's a more varied narrative structure that engages the viewer more than just visually.

I've been paying for porn for 16 years. My partner also pays for porn. Unfortunately, a lot of our friends of both genders, regardless of gender, believe that paying for porn is ridiculous.THANK YOU.
There are two reasons why women will never spend as much as men for watching porn: 1/ As I already said they don't want to pay for sex and buying porn is like paying for sex. Now they can think that buying a porn movie is not paying for sex. Ok. But there is another reason: 2/ Women can live without sex while men can't. For men, sex is a question of life or death. Men are sort of forced by their gender condition to at least masturbate and porn helps to do that in a more satisfactory manner. A woman with no partner will masturbate, what, once or twice a month. And I'm talking about sexualy active ones. 3/ Men are aroused visualy while women are aroused by romantic touch and decorum. Women can spend a lot of money in lingerie, and other sexy stuffs, indeed. But they will rarely think about buying pictures or videos for her sexual arousing. As someone pointed above: Women have their own porn already: Romantic books, love stories, movies about woman/man relationship etc... (Teenage girls and lesbians have Cosmopolitan) They masturbate with these stuffs, ... mentaly.

This is one of the most bizarre things that I have ever read on this forum. Only a couple times a month? Are you freakin serious? Where are you getting this from?Visual stimuli and "romantic touch and decorum" are not mutually exclusive. What makes you think they are?I'm just going to go ahead and assume that you're unaware of the existence of women's erotica. Furthermore, just because I might enjoy the occasional romantic novel doesn't mean that I won't watch porn. Why should it? And where do you get the idea that only teenagers and lesbians read Cosmopolitan? Plenty of wild assumptions and no facts.
I don't know where do you get such informations but , believe me , girls are aroused by visual as much as we do , you do know that male strippers exist, don't you? Also maybe it's hard to believe but I have been texted by girls who claimed to be masturbating even though we had sex few hours before Also do you know what a quickie is? never heard about one night fucks? You think it comes out of romanticism? Possibly love? And how about those who are swingers or just open couples , in love with every stud they meet? No man it's just plain sex, animal arousal, for both genders.
But girls don't need to masturbate as desperately as men! Men often watch porn because it's too complicated, difficult if not nearly impossible to date a fuckable partner and they do need it. For many men porn is the only solution for having a sexual life or for completing it. Women are rarely in a situation where finding a sexual partner is problematic unless she is very ugly or lesbian. There are a lot of ugly women, but incidentaly they are not the one who desire sex the most. (try to date an ugly woman and you will see). Women can be aroused visualy but they will not choose a porn DVD as the main stimulation for sex. They are not going to actively stimulate thenselves. That' why they are not going to buy thngs conciousely for sex. They have a different psychology. They will spend their money in thousands of other things before thinking of buying porn. Men by contrast will think of buying porn as soon as they have some money available. While they can be aroused, they do not NEED it. And for some reasons, those who buy the most of one thing are those who also need it the most. For exapmple, women NEED a new parfume every three months but they can spend an entire life without watching porn and feel confotable with it.

Considering all of the crazy, baseless nonsense you've written about women in this thread, am I right to assume that you include yourself in those categories?
What? Ever heard of "massage" parlors? Ever heard of escorts? you just need to turn over the corner to get some pussy if you can't date one , OK you need some money , but everything sum up , in the end a date is more costly and doesn't guarantee a success. so...
^ Why do you assume that a sex drive suffices to get women to have sex with you? Sex is not a no-cost proposition for women. There are other factors besides their enjoyment of the act which women have to take into consideration.
^ I concur , not even men have sex with any woman they met , not even when they are available and willing , I surely don't. There are women I wouldn't fuck for any reason , there have been girls I not only didn't fuck, but also pretended to be unaware of their opening, one wasn't even bad looking, she was good actually but for some reasons too long to explain I decided I would NEVER fuck her for any reason, and so I did.
I don't think studios are targeting the wrong audience. I think they are targeting the right audience with the wrong product. If I was a studio I would move production towards more niche and user contributed titles and let the online sites have their vanilla porn. In my opinion you can't fight vanilla porn with vanilla porn (especially if the online sites can churn it out much faster, with more diversity, and at a lower cost to the consumer). If you are an online porn consumer why would you buy a $20 DVD (4 - 5 scenes) when for the cost of one monthly membership to a mega site, you can select from 1000's of scenes. Basically, the 5 best scenes from NA/ZZ/RK/BB are probably going to be better than the 5 scenes that were put together for the DVD (even if they are with new stars, niches, first time acts etc.). The studios need to strike a deal with the paying customers and promise to produce the content that the paying customers want. As an example: Brazzers has released 263 scenes on their site since Jan. 1st. If what they produce is basically just as good as what you produce and it is appearing at rate 4 times faster, and their membership is cheaper, you are in trouble.

Fld and shank appear to not recognize that in the United States (and many other countries) there exists a social taboo, developed by men long ago, against the free expression of female sexuality. Though this taboo has eroded considerably since I was a teenager it is FAR from gone and most of us still have to fear a certain degree of social ostracization and moral condemnation if we are sexually promiscuous, admit we enjoy porn, speak openly about certain sexual fantasies and desires, etc. By and large it is not the same for men and perhaps this is why Fld and shank have erroneously concluded that, in comparison to men, women are basically uninterested in sex. Consider the following excerpt from Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jethá's masterpiece Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality (HarperCollins, 2010):
Now let's consider another quote, this time from shank:

The porn industry is dying for the same reasons the economy as a whole is dying..ego..instead of serving the market, giving people what they want, you got a handful of producers and companies trying to dictate what people should want and buy. When the market says we want Jade Aspen, Harley Dean, etc and you give them someone else you have no one to blame but yourself. RIP porn industry you were fun while you lasted.
@shank and @Fld Can either of you provide evidence to support your sweeping generalizations of female sexuality? You're both starting to sound like the type of guy who claims his inability to turn a woman on sexually is a result of women just not wanting sex as much as men. @Hardware, @LCF Agreed. Very different formulas behind the male and female sexual experiences. I feel that if porn film makers took a more data driven approach (ie paid attention to research on male vs female sexuality) and actually developed a formula for the female market, they would find that they would make more money from female porn consumers than male. Look at how Hollywood does it - movie sales aren't just about tickets in the theatre. There's also merchandise (toys, branded consumer products), interactive experiences like theme parks, tv spin-offs, and books. The top rated porn stars have already figured out this diversified approach with Fleshlight and dildo molds, sex toy lines, lingerie lines, and branding for all sorts of other "getting in the mood" items. @NotMyRealName I disagree about right market wrong product. Women make or influence 85% of all purchasing decisions (http://thenextweb.com/socialmedia/2012/01/24/the-top-30-stats-you-need-to-know-when-marketing-to-women/). Mainstream porn right now is targeted at males 18-40 primarily. Males 18-25ish is a segment with the highest unemployment rate, lowest median income, and is losing ground year over year economically to their female 18-25 cohorts. Long term, that's a terrible market to rely on for an industry already struggling. Right now the porn film biz is peddling the wrong product to the wrong market. @fredgee I disagree about the economy "dying". Poverty and decimation of the middle class in the US notwithstanding, commerce and trade worldwide is quite robust. I'm with you, though, on how producers' middle finger to the actual tastes of the people who have the money to buy premium porn products (DVD's vs website subscriptions, etc) is very self-defeating. They need female support to sustain the industry, and they continue to churn out "choke her, spit in her mouth, slap her face, anal destruction" misogynist fare.
If there are any producers reading this, this is my open offer to provide market research, brand reach and distribution to a female audience. I'm based in NorCal, maybe 20 minutes from Marin County where I hear a lot of filming moved over to after the condom law was passed in LA county.
@HS : I stand by my original assertion for a couple of reasons. First of all the stats you are quoting are culled from the entire economy. You are talking about dollars and I'm talking about porn dollars. If the economic trends said that all the money was going into the hands of 90 year old women, it wouldn't change the fact that 18 - 25 year old men are, on a whole, more interested in graphic sexual content than 90 year old women. Of course you could take all the production money and make volumes and volumes of granny porn but I think it would be a bad idea. It's like saying hey these OPEC countries have lots of money, we should sell them oil. I am curious what kind of porn it is you think will be such a big seller to women. Is it soft core/hardcore? Dramatic/instructional/vignette? Either way, good luck to you in your marketing and research.
Yes I'm in this category like many men. Half of my life I had to watch porn because I couldn't have sex often enough. Either I had no girlfriend or my girlfriend wasn't enough into it. (and I'm a man visualy ok) Even today, I live with a woman who is very hot (finaly!) and I still need to watch porn form time to time, but much less often than before. [hr]
Is it much diffenrent than watching porn? Massage parlors are just a more expensive way to pay for sex. Porn is the cheapest. I mean the question is the same: Are prostitues targeting the wrong audience? Why prostitues are not targeting women more? [hr]
It's exactely the same taboo for men. If a man tells around him that he enjoys porn, he will look wierd. Everybody knoews that men like porn, but it's not in the habit for men to talk about it. There would some embarrassement to do it even with close friends. It's not somehting we brag about. In society it's certainly very impolite to talk porn and your sexuality. And I'm not talking about stats I'v read, but about my own experience and the experience of my friends with whom I was tlaking to about it. [hr]
Ok, let's imagine this situation: Take a good looking guy and tell him to ask 20 women at random in a park or at a cafe, to sleep with them. My hat off, if he can get a "yes" out of 20 tries. Now take a similarly good looking woman and ask her to do the same with men.... See the difference? [hr]
I think most directors just want to film what THEY like and then sell it to those who have the same tastes. I don't think many directors are thinking about what will sell the best to the average joe. It just happens that what they do sells to a certain audience and they are fine with it. It could sell 1 hex less, they would still be doing it the same way because that's what they like. [hr]
I also would like to see what porn a woman would be so crazy about that she will pay money to buy it. As you said, it's like trying to sell oil to Saudis. Women are themselves, by their body, the raw material for porn production. Why should they buy it?

Well fucking is WAY different than masturbating it's not the same thing as porn , really also again , gigolos exist , meaning WOMEN paying men for sex , Male Stripper exist , meaning women paying to see men unclothing As why prostitutes aren't targeting women , well in case you didn't notice in a porn scene usually there is also a man , there's a number of sites who contain very good looking women AND men , so that both audiences are satisfied , in the past the appearance of men was basically irrelevant , it isn't any more women demand good looking men and they get them
It's not necessarily selfish/small-minded; it's merely doing what they know and enjoy. It's like many other artistic/creative endeavors...people create what they know and what they enjoy. Do you expect musicians to do market research to decide what genre of music to perform? No, the blues guy knows and performs blues music. The rapper guy knows and performs rap music. The jazz guy knows and performs jazz music.

^Good point. I've heard many mainstream directors say that they direct the movies that they want to see and can only hope that other people enjoy these films too. I don't know why adult film directors would be any different.

Actually I think you just answered the question as to why porn is slumping. Can't go into detail but the jazz, blues guys don't have the freedom to put out what they like unless they own the studio otherwise it has to be green lighted by the front office.
Gigolos may exist, but how many when compared with female prostitutes? The women who go to prostitutes maybe one in a thousand (and that too not necessarily for sex) compared to one in ten for men. In the following link http://terryaley.com/?p=815 Markus a guy who started working as the first legal American "Gigolo" in Nevada had to close shop due to lack of female customers. Most of the talk about Gigolo is only urban legend and is more of a material for TV serials.
^ You're very deluded , you really DON'T KNOW how many porn actors escort some of them went UTR lately some even abandoned their porn career to do the escorting only also you missed the point there are a lot baseless assumptions in this thread , men are more aggressive toward women , while I agree there are more men that women among porn customers women are generally offered more occasions to have sex , those men who constantly promote themselves to any two legged female are far more common than the other way around , thus offering more occasions to have actual sex compared to men. In any case that female don't feel the need to fuck is wrong beyond belief
If 85% of purchasing decisions are influenced by one group, yet you're tailoring your product to the group with the weakest purchasing power in the entire economy (that likely represents 2-5% of purchases) - your business model has very hard limitations and the revenue that you can make has a very very low ceiling. This is what porn is facing right now. Also...where are you getting this strawman argument about 90 year old women from the stat about 85% of purchasing decisions being driven by women? Why are you completely ignoring the fact that women in their 30's and 40's - a group which today boasts many mainstream sex symbols and other women still in their sexual peak - are in prime earning/consumption years? It makes your point kind of ridiculous.
Your oil analogy makes 0 sense, and I'm still not sure where you're getting the "sell to 90 year old women" bit - most of that 85% of purchases is driven by women aged 30-60. And if you're curious as to what kind of porn I think might be a big seller for women, check out my May 10th post where I made some suggestions:
My suspicion is that porn studios will need to diversify their product lines beyond just movies and into sex-related merchandise, transforming into "sex positive brands" rather than "porn studio."
But here, we're talking about producers and studios - the "front office" folks who provide investment and distribution to the directors. In Big time Hollywood, front office decisions are made based on what will make the most money, and not what the people in the front office want to see in theatres. Maybe the issue is that in porn many of the directors are also the front office - there isn't really a set of people in the studio whose sole focus is on maximizing profit.
If you did this experiment in Dubai, both the man and woman would end up in jail, with no sex. In any case, a vague hypothetical is not evidence of anything.
@HS: I congratulate you on some masterful trolling. Well done! I about fell out of my chair from laughing so hard when I read "theme parks"! Even though you don't like my analysis, I still wish you the best of luck. Have a good one.
^ I knew a guy who did this out of a club , he just asked to every woman walking out alone and I mean every , he never went over ten tries , and he wasn't even particularly good looking , a regular guy , a little out of shape even. Edited by - LCF on 5/14/2014 7:34:17 AM

If an alien in another galaxy aimed an antenna towards Earth and caught even a small portion of the porn that's being shot nowadays, he'd think Earthling procreation required: (1) verification of eligibility to have sex - as evidenced by at least one tattoo on your ass or thereabouts, (2) a cameraman who's harder to shut up than an 8 year old on a sugar high, (3) deep anal sex performed by a female actually in deep need of anal bleaching, (4) multiple males, at least one of whom must be black and at least one of whom must look like he was just released from Lompoc, (5) depositing of male sperm on a female's eyes, nose, ear, hair - anywhere other than her cookie, (6) furtive camera shots of one at least one male face just at the moment of climax by above referenced cameraman. All of this would lead the alien to conclude that we are one messed up species.
Well , we are I guess , also that is the final part of seduction , but according to all the soaps around here he may thinks we are pretty secluded to a very small number of interacting people ignoring all the others except for sports events

The best that porn producers can do is to hire a lot more female directors and see what they come up with. Far too many of us will not speak honestly and openly about our porn habits, even to other women (for fear of ostracization) or our partners. Thus, trying to figure out what the "average woman" wants to see in porn is, at least currently, not a realistic option.
^ Some of my VERY preferred directors are indeed females , Nica Noelle, Mason, Dana Vespoli, Diana DeVoe, Lily Cade and Lisa Ann (although I believe Chris Streams has a part on hers), to name the first coming to mind And even though I'm not into Lez sex I have a couple movies from Madison Young that I found interesting , even Stormy Daniels. Edited by - LCF on 5/15/2014 7:27:42 AM
^ There are indeed several outstanding female writers and directors working currently. While there are certainly more female directors now, the media acts as if this an entirely new phenomenon when it is not.
Maybe not porn, but there's already been considerable scientific research on female sexuality and arousal in general. Surely some insights from that can be used to inform the porn product in a meaningful way.

^Sure, but just to begin with that would require a staff of experts able to tell the difference between a good study and a bad study. Furthermore, interpreting the results of each study would be no easy task. Consider the following excerpt from Sex at Dawn, the superb book I quoted from earlier:
I don't know how results like that can even begin to be utilized by adult film producers. Surely they can try and good luck to them if they do, but a simpler solution would be to get considerably more female talent behind the camera and see what happens.
