When watching porn and seeing the SAME GUY fuck literally the 1,000TH hot girl in the ass I sometimes wonder is there any downside to working in the porn business if you are a guy? We all know what the benefits are: you get to bang hundreds, or thousands for guys who are more active or have worked a long time, of hot sexy nasty women. As someone who doesn't know anyone in the business I couldn't really think of too many downsides except that after a while (probably at least a few years I would guess) it might actually get boring since you've pretty much done everything with tons of different chicks. Do male porn stars ever just get bored of their "job" and sort of view it the same way other people who go to work every day do? What are some negatives or downsides to working in the porn industry if you are a male? Edited by - Cloudburst on Jan 29 2014
Start with 1,0001 things that can happen to your dick, such as breaking it, and how many STDs would you like? Five is a nice round number. Listing all the downsides would be a massive TLDR I don't want to type, but there is a blog that a male pornstar wrote just for you. Christian sings the blues.
i doubt you are always attracted to your scene partner. and you have to do everything for the camera and what the director wants. i don't think it's a great job.
Well i think this is the best job you could get, what is better than if you have to fuck a hundreds of hot chicks, and its better to be having sex with alot of girls and fulfill every fantasy of yours than sitting in office making files and reports, there are ups and downs in every profession, but think of it if you have alot of fan girls who would die to have sex with you.
I posted this link in another thread; I found it interesting. 7 Reasons Why It Sucks To Be a Male Porn Star. I'm not sure it's really written by a porn performer, but most of the points make sense.
I think the main downsides are lack of control. You have to fuck whether you are attracted to her or not. You have to fuck whether you are horny or not. You have to fuck whether you are in the mood or not. You have to fuck in an uncomfortable/unnatural way, because of the camera's needs and the director's requirements.
There are very few guys who can handle the demands of being an adult film actor, that's why we see the same ones all the time. For most guys, it's best for it just to remain a dream.
I can't imagine someone holding a camera inches away from you being too relaxing either.

Not true. From what I've read guys earn between $200 at the low end to $600 at the high end so if you average it to say $400 per scene and say he shoots 20 scenes per month he takes in $96,000 per year. That's not lousy pay at all, more like decent upper middle class pay.

I agree with you but I think most (if not all) male porn stars are exhibitionists to one degree or another. So the weird thing is they actually may not be that bothered by the camera then if you think about it.
well having numerous downsides doesn't mean one shouldn't try, if you have a big dick, and you are good at sex then go for it. just imagine if you succeed to have a name in the porn you would be fucking riley reid, skin diamond, maddy, mia malkova etc etc. isnt it enough for you ? :P
Guys just starting out probably won't work even 10 scenes a month, and the newbies are the ones who are earning the $200/ shoot. So realistically, they're probably grossing closer to $24,000/ year, probably less. That's poverty level income in most places. Also, agents and/or managers may take a sizable cut of the earnings. But if you think you can do the job, don't let me or anyone else discourage you. But also realize that it's naive to believe that being a male pornstar has no downsides. Porn dudes always whine something along the lines of "Hey, man, it's not all it's cracked up to be..." etc, etc. It's like when people say money doesn't buy happiness - I still wouldn't turn down the chance to find out for myself.
Like others have said the pay, porn is the only business I can think of where the women make significantly more than their male counterpoint. Then you factor in the costs of being a pornstar, agents and managers fees, travel expenses, more than likely gym membership, and Uncle Same and it is nearly impossible to get health insurance. There is no union to air an grievances against producers and directors who screw you over, no real retirement plan. You have no real power in the industry so you will have to do scenes that you don't want to do. The whole preference thing does seem to fly with males in the industry. You might have sex with a hottie one day a week and be doing, bbw, grannies,...etc the rest of the week. The final product maybe hot sex but its actually long hours in sometime uncomfortable positions. You might never have a normal relationship outside of porn, a women would be less likely to want to date a male pornstar. Eventually when you do leave porn and have to find a normal job and try to have a normal life once a business finds out about your former life you more than likely would be out of that job. You don't have as many options for other streams of revenue as your female counterparts. The women are the real stars, they can go out and do many other things to supplement their income. How many male pornstars do cam shows, or can sell used pieces of clothing, or do any of the other countless things female stars can do. Also you said it yourself, the SAME GUY, there is a reason you see the same guys doing these scenes and doing them into their 40's and 50's. Its because they are reliable and trustworthy you know what you are gonna get and they dont relinquish their spots all that easily.

Several years ago I was talking to a male talent and he was telling me about being paired with a very popular French actress who did not practice very good feminine hygiene. The smell was so bad he couldn't perform and a second actor was brought in who also couldn't perform because of the smell. Since she was the star of the feature they couldn't ask for a substitute for her.

Downsides of porn: 1. The pressure to get it up and keep it up for hours on end on a daily basis with 10 people standing around looking at their watches waiting for you. As its been said many times before by male talent, you're only as good as your last scene. You might a free pass once for wood issues, the second time it happens, you're out of work as you've become unreliable. 2. Having to deal with flakey/bitchy female talent. 3. Having to abstain from real life sex because you have a job booked in the morning. 4. Good luck finding a stable relationship with a civilian. Seymore Butt's show covered that whole concept as the minute he actually told girls what he did, they ran the other way. 5. The girl is the star and you're nothing more than a piece of meat/prop. 6. Unless you own the product, you're not making that much as Tommy Gunn will attest to in the article that was in LA Weekly (I think, but mentioned on this site) a few years ago. 7. Find Jerry Butler's book Raw Talent, and he'll tell you all the ins and outs of his experiences.
If you're a guy who can consistently get wood at the drop of a hat, you're a certified freak of nature. I have days when all the porn in the world can't do it for me; don't know if it's because I'm tired, not in the mood or what. Anyway, I always have a little chuckle to myself when porn dudes bring up the 'wood' issue - how, then, do you explain all the limp dicks you see in porn (and you do see 'em...all the time).
Except that you basically have to be James Deen to shoot 20 scenes a month. I'd argue that there's only about 10-20 men in porn, if that, that shoot that much.

Wow, can you say what porn star it was? I wonder if it was just the girl or a French thing, aren't they known for bad hygiene?
Or injecting your dick with Caverject (readily available at almost any pharmacy by prescription) or Trimix (a pharmacy compounded mix of three boner drugs that is easier on the dick than Caverject in the long run but since it is compounded separately for each order it is very expensive). Vivid director PT Thomas comments on it in an episode of Vivid Valley filmed in 2003, referring to a chap known then as Ben English -- now the owner of mega-agency for porn chicks LA Direct and going by Derek Hay (I think both are pseudonyms). Kink also had an incident where a male performer injected Trimix into his dick and fainted during a scene because of it (granted that is a rare side effect of the mixture) -- I read that Peter Acworth actually sent his directors a memo telling them not to give their male talent the drug out of any prescription a director may have after the incident. Of course the directors can't stop male talent from using their own prescription and I doubt anyone in a director's position is stupid enough to shoot up male talent's dick without that talent having the prescription so I doubt the memo was necessary but that's Peter for you.

What exactly did the Trimix do to Ben English, is that why he retired from porn after just a few years?
Stable relationships may be difficult of course, but apparently hundreds of women from mainstream life are eager to have casual sex with a handsome male star like James Deen who is said to please women. Its not clear if this is really true or a carefully cultivated image of his. Recently Jenn Tisdale, a reporter for Huffington Post made a sex video with him (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jenn-tisdale/my-amateur-porn-date-james-deen_b_4215113.html).
Exactly my point. They're on drugs so the whole "You've got to get wood in front of a camera crew" argument is a non-starter. Then again, I guess there is the occupational hazard of injecting this stuff into your wang...I've always wondered if a chemically-induced erection feels as pleasurable (for the guy) to use as one attained from natural arousal? I mean, if you're on drugs you can basically fuck even though it might be the last thing on your mind. I've never taken Viagra or anything like that - anyone tell me how it feels? Painful, I imagine.
PT Thomas (a longtime director at Vivid and a performer in the 70's) said on Vivid Valley that Ben English/Derek Hay used Caverject before his scenes and that was why he had wood as soon as his pants dropped. This was filmed in late 2003 (IIRC this was before Trimix was created). I don't know if it did any damage to him or if that was why he transitioned over to talent management/representation. However, Danny Wylde left the biz recently because his doc told him he was going to hurt himself if he kept shooting his dick up with boner drugs so it can happen.
Viagra, Levitra and Cialis don't cause pain in the dick when taken properly. Viagra works the best, Cialis a little less and Levitra is just about worthless. Don't overdose or you will have to have your dick filleted and it will never be possible to get an erection again afterwards. I haven't tried injected boner drugs (Caverject and Trimix are the main ones), I have heard that Caverject is a bitch to inject because it hurts which is why Trimix (has to be compounded at a compounding pharmacy, that is not a drug mix that is manufactured in volume) came about. Same overdose warning, it is much easier to accidentally OD on injectables because they are measured in tenths of a cc which is a very small amount. To OD on pills you would have to take more than one (and probably more than two unless you are on the highest dose pills). Also, if you are on nitroglycerin or a newer replacement for nitroglycerin DO NOT take boner pills for any reason. I don't know whether the injectables are an option for these patients.
Read Tyler Knight's blog about the dark side of being a male pornstar. I'm too lazy to find the links to it for you. I also had a old post about the negatives of being a male performer talking about how you are fucked if you have to get a regular job later. The women actually have more options but not much better. I'm too lazy to find that old post for you also. Sorry.
I see a lot of male performers get "lost in the character", meaning even after the cameras are off they just want to FUCK FUCK FUCK. Then they want u to come home with them to fuck some more. Then you'll see them at a club and they're asking if u wanna go somewhere and fuck. I do love the cock, but if I had it 16 hrs a day there wouldn't be that raw desire for it anymore. So I think that some male performers fuck so much its no longer fun for them and they fuck out of sheer muscle memory.
I don't think any purpose would be served by naming the actress and it would be a violation of the forum etiquette rules. I think hygiene is an individual decision no matter what country you're from. The first girl that ever granted me access to the golden triangle smelled so bad I ran off to wash my hands as soon as the smell hit me. When I was in high school there was a cute girl in one of my classes that smoked so much her breath smelled like an ashtray. So trying to perform in a movie when your partner has bad breath or an unclean pussy is a downside to being a male porn star. The same could also be said for females working with other females.
OK, so it's not painful but it must feel as if your cock doesn't 'belong' to you any more; like it's been amputated and replaced with a hunk of 4x2. Can't imagine just fucking mechanically - as a lot of these guys must do. I mean, by the time you're balls deep in the 697th asshole of your career you're probably thinking something like "Have I paid the gas bill this month"? Edited by - N00dlesDaddy on 2/1/2014 11:40:18 AM
^ Are you kidding? Have you seen how long it takes some of these bozos to cum? I can usually go and stick the kettle on while waiting for dudes like Mark Davis to blow his ball snot. That's how desensitized these guys are to all that pussy on tap they've been getting for X number of years. Still, I'm not bitter.

^ Actually, while the Viagra gives the guys the wood, it also makes ultimately cumming a far more tedious procedure. Not to mention studs that are now beyond their prime. But, not all the guys use erection-enhancing drugs. And, not all the guys are doing so many scenes that they become desensitized. I'm sure many studs do zone-out and go on auto-pilot. However, my joke about "mental tricks" is based in fact. During the "Pre-Viagra Era," mental tricks to avoid cumming too soon was a commonly known and discussed practice (as were mental tricks to help you pop quickly once the director gave you permission). Also, today's porn-shoots are marathons compared to the time-frames of days gone by. I wonder how this affects the old up-and-down dynamics?
Actually the boner pills just help you get a boner, you still have to be aroused to get it. Of course the injections are known for causing a boner without any stimulation so your comment may apply to those options.
What's unique about (genuine) male arousal is that it can't be faked. If you have to inject drugs to be able to screw hot porn girls in the arse you're desensitized, to my mind. There's something almost depressing about watching a jaded porn guy mechanically fuck his 3000th girl with a chemically-induced hard on. And given the widespread use of drugs, why is being a male performer such an elitist club?
Of course Viagra and all the others don't cause an erection , it still takes arousal , it just make blood flow easier and stronger . just allows the tissues to open to accept more blood flow , so even if you are not stimulated you may get a bit of an erection due to increased blood flow , it would also help with confidence , a major factor for a male star . Caverject is a bit old fashioned , there is Muse , same drug that cause major blood flow to the penis but is simply a pellet that is deposited into the urethra , no needle . testosterone is also a big part , I imagine most guys use injections to pump up their t-levels fairly high .

Charity I'm curious how often do male porn stars fuck other porn chicks OFF screen? Is it common or rare? Also is it true what people are saying here about guys using drugs to help them perform, how common is that in the industry? ..Thanks..

^ Well, let's start with single scenes today that can be as long as entire movies, that were shot on film, during the Golden Age. Then, take the scenes themselves. Let's use the Kay Parker scenes from Taboo as an example (about as Golden Age as you can get). The following lengths are the approximate length of the sexual part of the scene: Kay Parker with Mike Ranger (the Son, 1st time) "7:00" Kay Parker with Mike Ranger (the Son, 2nd time) "5:30" Kay Parker with Michael Morrison (her boss) "3:30" In today's scenes, just the blowjob portion alone typically lasts longer than entire scenes once did A typical scene today will include set-up/tease, blowjob, pussy eating, fucking (vaginal and/or anal), cowgirl, reverse cowgirl, doggie and the cumshot sequence. That's an awful lot of start and stop, repositioning and up-and-down to produce 30-to-70 minutes of an edited final scene. Hence, "today's porn-shoots are marathons compared to the time-frames of days gone by."
Are there male porn stars who become unable to work in any other industry so that they are faced with a choice of doing "gay for pay" work or starving?
Happens all the time. Sometimes its for pleasure and sometimes girls do it for the brownie points. As far as guys using drugs, I'd say 9 out of 10 do in the form of cialis, levitra or the most extreme, injecting caverjact directly into their penis.

One of the things I'm curious about is with erection enhancing drugs being used by male porn stars to help them perform, wouldn't basically any decent-looking guy be able to work in the porn industry? The real question then becomes: why the fuck are we still seeing the SAME guys all the time when all a guy has to do is pop some pills and he's good to go?
^It helps, but it's not automatic. I remember watching a scene from the show that Seymore Butts was in. There was an inexperienced guy who had taken a bunch of Viagra, but still couldn't get it up. It ruined the whole shoot. So a producer has a choice - hire a new guy who might work out, but if he can't do the job, thousands of dollars will go to waste. Or hire somebody who's proven himself many times before. The choice is pretty obvious.
Pretty much this. You have to fuck. That's your job and if you can't do it, nobody will hire you. So even if the girl is not your cup of tea, or even if she's a total bitch, or even if you're not having a good day and you'd rather be asleep at home, you have to fuck. If you're a combo actor/director, you get more control over the scene, but you still have to fuck and you're still shooting with the fans in mind, so those uncomfortable positions are still necessary and you still have to fuck girls you might not personally like. The risk of contracting an STD is constant, especially since most porn is shot without condoms, and if you get one, you can't work until you've gotten better. Having sex outside of porn can be difficult because you have to "save it up" for the shoot. If you cum too much before a scene, your load will suck, so you have to abstain from sex when you're scheduled for a shoot later that day. Erection-enhancing drugs do help performers keep their wood for long periods of time, but they don't help with premature ejaculation and, if you've got a small dick, they won't do anything to make it bigger. They also don't help you improve your fucking style, so if you're not fast and furious with your thrusting, Viagra isn't going to fix that. So, while it certainly makes it easier for guys to fuck for long periods of time, it doesn't necessarily mean that any decent-looking guy can do porn. Anyone who uses injectable drugs to help their dicks stay hard runs the risk of causing permanent damage, and too-frequent use of erectile dysfunction medication (like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra) can actually make you impotent. Google Danny Wylde. Edited by - evilpineapples on 2/10/2014 4:41:49 AM

Just because you take Viagra doesn't mean you can get it up and fuck a girl with 10 people standing around watching you. Then for the popshot you have the same people standing there watching you jerkoff until you cum. You're not there to have fun sex with the girl, you're a prop. The mood is not a fun one at all but more of a mechanical time is money situation. The pressure is on. Get it up, get it in, get it off, all with an audience.
