I've heard about a TV show about two rivaling porn dynasties, but that was quite a few years ago and probably never got past the pilot. Still, it is about the industry to an extent. Kind of related: The People vs. Larry Flynt. I know it's about the magazine, primarily, but really I would say it speaks to the industry as a whole, and a lot of the issues we're dealing with in politics/art at the moment. It's also really good - right up there with Boogie Nights, in my opinion. [Link]

I watched it when it came out, and was pretty young (I was listening to Hole at the time...). I didn't really know who Larry Flynt was, nor was I a proponent of pornography in any form. I was really surprised by this movie. I also remember feeling extremely sad when I left the cinema; the scene where his wife dies was particularly upsetting for me. Great film, and recognized by the Oscars too (shocking!). [Link]

Schrader knew a lot about porn of the era but had a love/hate relationship with it. I read him talking about writing the Taxi Driver script when he was in NYC, driving taxi, collecting guns and watching a lot of porn. As far as xxx movies about xxx I'd second Skin Flicks and toss in Raw Talent, Sexcapades and Exposed (with John Leslie). There are loads of docs on porn, one of the best on the feature-era in the 70s is part of the Pornography: A Secret History of Civilization series, from the BBC I believe, that has a section called Twentieth Century Foxy that is terrific: with interviews with Alex De Renzy, Henri Pachard, John Leslie, Marilyn Chambers, Georgina Spelvin, etc. [Link]

I was suggesting that the only movies about such smutty subject matter that get Oscar nods are a) made by "prestigious" directors, and/or b) get nominations to show how edgy the academy is (and then don't win), hence Robin Williams winning Best Supporting Actor instead of Burt Reynolds (still a thorn in my side). And, finally, I was also thinking about how a prestigious director can "lower" themselves to treating such subject matter, thereby "elevating" the material to academy level, as well as make us applaud said director (who I really like, by the way, so this isn't a criticism of him - the movie is great). A truly terrible show, it is was clearly produced to present Seymour and porn in the most positive light imaginable and so there's nothing of real interest or truth in it. BBC 4 on the other hand, has produced some interesting docs on porn over the years, and there's a Canadian doc/reality show called Webdreams that was very good, but that was more about internet porn in Montreal.
