Having just reviewed SEX ISLAND for Adult DVD Empire, I must express my dismay over Adam & Eve employing a company logo icon on the top right of the main feature.

For those not acquainted with my pissing and moaning over the use of non-removeable graphics or icons imprinted on DVDs (usually used to signal a multiple angle), let me bore everyone (once again) by stating that I believe these "pictures" wreck the integrity of the original movie. Just as we are "forced" to see television logos on the bottom right of the TV screen, now we have the company identification logo placed prominently and obtrusively on your favorite Adam & Eve DVD. This is unacceptable, and unnecessary.

The DVD claims that there is a purpose in using these "visable" [sic] icons (they help identify chapters and climax scenes) but I don't buy it.

Mind you, I am not saying that SEX ISLAND is a rip-off, or that the production is sub-par. However, I am miffed that Adam & Eve would even bother with these damn icons so as to distract from the viewing experience.

End of rant.

Sonic inquired the following:

"Wait a minute wait a minute.

"You're telling me when it's actually playing..the logo stays there till the end???"

Yup! A red apple at the top right of the screen while Tera is getting it doggy-style.

Thank you Diesel

I will avoid this movie.

This is ridiculous. It's bad enough that many xxx flicks sports a bad transfer and on top of that..a logo pasted on your set to give it a nice "apple burn-in" on your new HDTV set. :)

Thanx.

I really liked the movie myself. As I stated in my review, I also hated the hot shot icon. It's not so much a logo as it is a means to skip directly to the sex scenes/orgasms on the movie.

I asked a few friends and they thought it was a great idea but I strongly disagreed with them. Read my review and you'll notice my objections in it. I already wrote to them about it and I doubt they'll be adding it in (onscreen) any future releases.

I will say this for the movie though, the transfer was very nicely done. Considering it was made at the same time (same cast, same everything) as Caribbean Undercover-I was amazed how much better the picture quality was. Except for the logo, Sex Island was like CU done correctly...

Hey Diesel! Thanks for taking the time to review this DVD.

The "Hot Shot" logo is getting mixed reviews (as is the video itself!) What I am finding is that the consumer has been happy with it, while reviewers and competitors have had negative comments.

As we all know it is very simple to "Jump" to sex using remote buttons. I have received phone calls from consumers asking how to get to the hotshot, while they had the movie in! I don't even notice the button, I also don't notice the logo's on TV either. Matter of taste, I have decided to Kill the Icon. We really did not do it to "burn" the Logo into the buyers head, I wanted it to be as clear as possible, and to serve a purpose. Sometimes your a bit jaded my man! Look around, Adam & Eve is everywhere, we really don't need the consumer to view our logo 24-7. Poor choice of Icon- we did not think it all the way through, a more generic icon would of shown the intent. Live and Learn.

Overall I think your review was fair, it has received a "4" and you offered up a "3.5", probably would have gotten a "4"
without the icon. I am not a fan of Beach Sex Either, difficult to believe they are enjoying it, I never have! Sand in the ass kind of takes away from the pleasure.

The Tera Lesbian scene really irks me as well, Selfish B%#$@ch. When I first screened the movie I was very angry at the director- without Tera eating Pussy- what was the point?
I was overruled, and the multi-talented Evan Stone made the scene workout OK. This is not the only time Tera has pulled that stunt.

Jessica Drake is awesome, but the fact is Tera outsells her 5 to 1, oh well!

Sonic- Icon Bad, Transfer great! There is more to this product then an icon that some folks hate.
E-mail your address and I will send you a copy, and you can see that your statement was a generalization that does not apply.

JK,
Maybe you can answer this question for me (every other time that I brought this suggestion up, the studio representative has disappeared from the thread).

When doing something like a "Hot Shot" or "Alternate Angle" icon, why don't you just take advantage of the sub-title feature of DVD? DVD sub-titles don't have to be text. They can be icons. This way the viewer is the one who gets to decide if they want to see these icons or not.

To me, this is a no-lose situation. Everybody gets what they want. For examples of mainstream DVD's that have taken advantage of this capability, check out "Ghostbusters" (they do a Mystery Science 3000 type thing using subtitles), "The Matrix ("Follow the Rabbit" feature), and "The World Is Not Enough" (used to turn on storyboards).

So, you're saying that only the people who actually state their opinion don't like it. The people whose opinions are not expressed anywhere, you take to mean they are happy with it. You should help out on the Florida elections!

I must say that I haven't seen Sex Island yet, but thank you already for removing the hot shot icon, JKRULL. As a positive suggestion (we've got to have them once in a while too ), why not just use the chapters on the DVD. The sex scene starts at the beginning of one chapter, and the cum shot is at the start of the next chapter. It would still give the people who like to skip to the cum shot during the movie an easy way to do it while at the same time not have an annoying icon (which as you can tell I hate also) at the top of the screen.

Thanks for your consideration and prompt responses on all the stuff with Adam & Eve, JKRULL. It's nice to see companies who care enough to respond so promptly. It's even nicer to be at a website where so many companies do it.

Gogo, most porn consumers like things that us "expert" yet jaded reviewers don't. I admitted that a few friends liked the feature even though I didn't-this was an effort to be fair. I think he meant that the feedback he received, and he receives a lot of feedback, from consumers, was favorable. Just because someone doesn't write reviews for a magazine or website, doesn't mean they don't make their opinion heard to him.

Reviewers tend to view with a more critical eye. They also tend to be more knowledgable about aspects of porn than the average person. Further, we often get jaded having watched a lot more porn than the average guy.

JKrull, thanks for being a regular participant here. That you listen to us, and sometimes act upon our comments, is a very nice change from those who don't read what we say or simply ignore it.

Thanks for responding, JKRULL! I sort of knew that you would, which is why I posted the message. I appreciate the fact that Adam & Eve cares enough about their products to respond to incessant whining such as mine.

And just to let you know, despite the icon, I ended up buying the disc anyhow because of Ms. Patrick (despite her aversion against carpet-munching)! Which just goes to show that when it comes to porn critics, we still ultimately think with our dicks.

Diesel "I bought it because of Ms. Patrick" Yup- at the end of the day, no matter what you do in the production of a DVD
, whatever features you include, if you have a star like Tera or Jenna or Ginger, they fly off the shelf! Sex Island and Caribbean Undercover (still selling like crazy- 1000 a week!) outsell Witchs tail 10-1- which is both a better movie and a superior DVD. Asia doesn't command the attention she once did.. FYI- Just finished the remake of Dinner Party, not only is the transfer a zillion times better (not very hard to out do the previous one) We were also able to fix many of the faults on the 35MM masters as well. Re-did menu's etc etc.

Bill Broderick- I was a little worried when I started reading your feedback, thought it was going to be a heavy-handed, I think you make an intelligent suggestion, and as you know my background is not in multi-media I rely on my authors, and none have suggested it. I like the concept.
Vision Disk has been sent this thread, along with a note from me to pick up the DVD'S you mentioned and to have something prepared for my review ASAP. FYI- Just finished re-doing Dinner Party 1 (read above)

Hosutondon- People are going to start to think you work over here! I really appreciate your "explaining" to the uninformed, but quick witted folks like GOGO- I got a kick out of his comment (I was a mail in voter in Florida)
GOGO since I figured you were just having some with me, I ask you te read HOUSTONDON comments, as he states the consumers DID express their opinions, but directly to me. They were not posted on any review sites or in print. We have 3 Million retail customers, we get 100's of letters and e-mails each week on a variety of products and promotions. We do not publish customer comments. At times we may ask if we can quote them, I will ask the next person I get feedback from, or direct them to this site. (Steph, I will do that anyway!)

I appreciate all of you input and ASTRONIGHT you are not forgotten! The great thing about this thread is that it targeted a best seller, high profile title- something that is not often done elsewhere.

JKrull, as much as I like company rep's who are intelligent and thoughtful enough to participate here (not to mention listen to our comments), I doubt you'd want me as an employee. I'm a generalist which means I'd be the guy holding the grip on sets, pouring over business records at 3 am in the morning, scouting sets on my "days off", telling Tera she needed to eat rug, and negotiating contracts during the day. In short, a detail person who'd drive everyone crazy.

I know you get loads of consumer responses because I've sent them in myself-I've only been a reviewer for a few months (and only a consumer reviewer/unpaid at that) but I have a long history of writing letters, calling, and sending emails about problems (or praise) that dates back years. I just wish I could attend the expo to get some "insider perks". ;)

People like a woman's "look" and she sells lots of dvd's. Silly but true. Is it any wonder that some of them become prima donna's-when the marketplace supports their actions?

To JKrull:

Hey, if you can't find a single soul to review this new version of THE DINNER PARTY...heck, I'm willing to do the porn community a favor and give it a critical view. I would begrudgingly make the sacrifice to watch that fantastic Celeste/Debi Diamond/Misty Rain scene in its new digital transfer. It would be my personal Christmas gift to humanity.

No need to thank me, everyone...

I avoid this b/c it's a logo idenitifcation thing "needed" for network or cable stations to remind the viewer which of 500 channels they happen to be glued to at the moment. with a DVD or movie, it's completely unnecessary b/c you picked the DVD up at the store, bought it brought it home and physically inserted into your DVD or VHS player. Ergo, you actively understand whose product you are viewing and thus a logo is completely unnecessary and outrageously intrusive

do you think that Spielberg plasters a Dreamworks icon in the corner of the movie screen when you go the theater to watch Saving Private Ryan? Of course not.

Is Adam and Eve that self conscious or overbearing that they need to distract us (they would say remind us of course) for every second of the damn disk?

Ahhhh, I was getting worried Torris had gone soft on
us.

We have 55 DVD'S in release, and one with the icon.

So you have to assume Torris, We did it for you!

But seriosly, as I stated BEFORE Torris unleashed his unique brand of constructive comments, we made a mistake, wrong logo choice and it should have left the screen.

We like Bill Brodericks suggetion very much. If Adam & Eve
is considered overbearing for a little logo, I hate to see what you have to say about studios that make it hard to find the movie, after going through all their propietary SPAM.

Thanks for voicing your opinion, through all the bullshit and way you deliver your message, in this case you are probably partially right. We have dropped the idea.

JK,
In my earlier post, I gave a Bond title as an example of using sub-titles for accessing the Storyboard feature. Unfortunately, I gave you the wrong title. It is "Tomorrow Never Dies" that has this feature (not "The World Is Not Enough".

Since you mentioned that you would have someone check out the discs that I cited, I figured that I would fix my error. I apologize if I caused you any inconvenience.

Hi Diesel and all the other fine reviewers of Product,
I have read with interest your reviews, likes and dislikes
over the past couple of months and have decided to join in.

I work with JKrull of Adam and Eve and we do some of the
DVD's that you have reviewed. One of the issues I would
like to address is the HOT SHOT button on the Sex Island.

Prior to the playing of the movie, there is a verbage
page that informs the veiwer of the icon and it's
functionality...It is not just a logo to support A&E,
it is a trademarked icon to jump to the pop shot of
each chapter.

Albeit a little annoying to some, we have been working
to get it more translucent and in the bottom right hand
corner, and smaller. My question to you is, if it were
in this position, like the networks, would it still
bother you? Unfortunately we have a function to take
the viewer right to the main event, but if nothing
is there to tell them, how do they know? My point
being most DVD viewers are not up to speed on all
the functions of the remotes, and as we continue
to change what these functins can do it will continue
to get more murky.

Thanks for the Ear!!

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the great suggestion, however, on the system
currently used for the Authoring of the DVD, the
subtitle page can have icons scripts....almost anything
you want, but.....no functionality...i.e. if the icon
is there, it is only an icon, it you click on it it will
not take you to the pop shot. We are working on setting
up an Option page, that would allow the viewer to turn
the icon on or off, but either way it will still function
when off. If you hit the chapter advance it will take
you to the pop shot, also, see my note to Diesel regarding
the change in the icon and let me know what you think.

Thanks,

ImageKat,
Thanks for the reply. I understand that removing the icon using the methodology that I suggested will not remove the functionality that the logo represents.

I don't think that anybody is asking that you remove (or turn off) the Hot Shot or Multi Angle functionality. All that we are asking is that you allow the viewer to determine if we want to see an icon appear on the screen or not.

As far as whether a translucent icon is objectionable, my attitude is that if it can not be turned off, then it is objectionable. Vivid's multi-angle icon is translucent, but I absolutely hate it. Sure the networks have a translucent logo on the corner of the screen, but do you know ANYBODY who actually likes to see them? Personally, I would rather lose the functionality then have to see an icon keep popping up on the screen.

Like I said before, my choice is to keep the functionality, but make the icon optional. Thanks for listening

ImageKat,

I'm not a reviewer, just another plebian consumer but I also really dislike these icons.

Simply starting the following chapter at the "pop shot" would serve the same fuction of your icon on the disc without annoying us. ;)

As a reviewer, I'd rip a translucent icon just as much as a solid icon. I hate the icons on the networks.

Hello, ImageKat! Thanks for your comments.

Unless the icon is removeable, or can be turned off at the viewer's option, I am completely against ANY graphic on my DVD movies or programs, no matter how small or discreet.

The original artistic integrity of the finished movie is compromised for the sake of a featured novelty [i.e., a cumshot or change in angles] and it detracts from the viewing experience (yes I know that porn serves a "purpose" and is not really meant to be watched like a Martin Scorsese flick but bear with me here). If SEX ISLAND were meant to be a "virtual sex" flick like the ones starring Tera Patrick and Jenna Jameson, then I would not care. But SEX ISLAND is a featured movie (whatever its merits or success is a matter of opinion) and I don't like watching a movie while being reminded that it's also an interactive DVD.

In Metro's latest flick, MEMOIRS OF A MADAM, the company seems to have done away with any on-screen identification of its multiple angles (they used to use a "2ND ANGLE" graphic description which cheesed me off to no end). I wish that VCA and especially Vivid Video would do the same.

And although DVDs are getting cheaper and cheaper and are appealing to more of the great unwashed masses, I don't feel that Adam & Eve should have to pander to consumers who won't take the time to read the manual to see how their player works. If the viewer doesn't know how to use his/her remote well enough to get to a climactic scene immediately, well, I'm sure they will eventually find satisfaction without being guided by an icon.

So if Adam & Eve gives us an option to turn off the icon, then that would be swell [but please fix the glitch where the speed search buttons are disabled during several chapters], but if I had it my way, I would just stick to giving the viewers good solid transfers with everything else being [optional] gravy.

Oh, and thank you, ImageKat and JKrull for listening!

Bill, Diesel, HoustonDon, Astroknight, Scipio
and everyone eles.....

Thanks to all of you who responded to my question
about to use or not to use the icon. I appreciate
all of the honesty and directness in your replies,
This enables me to give A & E a more friendly
product. We are definitely removing the icon
from the movie as a standard, the functionality
will still be there by using chapter advance,
but the viewer will have the option to turn
the icon on and off.

Diesel I am concerned about a comment of no
fast search in the chapter? Did this occur
on an A & E movie? The only thing that is
not fast search enabled is FBI and compliance
warnings. All other aspects of the movie and
chapters should have the ability to do so.

Please let me know the title you encountered
this problem with and I will have it checked.

Thanks again for all the input.

The problem on the SEX ISLAND DVD occurs at random, at times, but it's also erratically consistent.

At the beginning of any given chapter, the search button becomes disabled [my Panasonic 120 displays the red circle with a slash through it, clearly indicating "no" function]. Sometimes, if you skip directly to a chapter, or go back to the beginning, the search button works again [but not always]. This problem did not occur until I was at the beginning of the girl/girl shower scene [about 1/3 into the movie] during my first viewing of the DVD. Then it became randomly disabled at various times. And of course, I am not just talking about the FBI warning...

By the way, I also tried this disc on a high end Sony 7700 and it exhibited the same problems. Older Vivid DVDs also disabled the search feature when the logo appeared for a second angle. I could not establish a pattern of why this problem persists...

Thanks for the info, I am looking into as we speak.
As we continue to try more and more with the DVD's
we do encounter little glitches. We do not want
these glitches but sometimes they sneak in.

Your bringing this to my attention is very helpful
Thanks, will let you know what I found out as it was
not supposed to have any restrictions.

Thanks,

Imagekat,
What is the purpose of disabling the remote control during these warnings? Does anybody think that this will prevent someone from copying the disk? From my perspective, disabling my remote only serve the purpose of delaying the beginning of the movie and annoying me. I would really be interested in understanding what A&E (as well as a few other studios) think that they are accomplishing by doing this.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,
Ahhhh, the dreaded fbi warning. It's the law, it must
appear on the screen long enought for everyone to
read normally 10 to 15 seconds....don't ya just hate it...Yes it is very annoying but we must comply.
Thanks,

Speaking of those FBI warnings found on almost every video material marketed to consumers, the genesis of this ominous presence is the result of the porn industry itself. That's right...back in the early eighties, the Mitchell Brothers vigorously protected the copyright on their home video movies, and won several suits against video pirates and bootleggers. They are, in part, the reason why we have FBI warnings on all video programs threatening viewers against unauthorized image copying of the latest Tera Patrick blowjobs.

Unbelieveable, but true (see the book X-RATED [about the life and death of Artie Mitchell] for details).

So you see, porn does have serious social and political merits.

Imagekat,
I understand why the warning is on the disk. what I don't understand is why you disable the buttons on the remote to allow us to get past this if we want. This can't be part of the law that you are complying with. If it were, every adult videotape would be illegal, because a VCR's Fast Forward button can't be defeated.

Man, I hate that, too. Even though copying a video was the last thing on my mind, I've been scared straight more than once by it. Talk about a mood Breaker! Takes awhile to shake off that visual of J. Edgar Hoover in a dress. I wonder if it has to be so large as well?

Hi Bill,
In response to your question about the FBI warning,
although yes you can forward through the VHS, we
do not allow this function on the DVD by request
of clients.
Thanks,
