ok - i'm replying to myself - but just one example...

here's a review of diva x: brittany nominated for best interactive DVD. I've tried viewing this disc and I think Draken is being overly nice in his review.

OK - I lied - this time I can't keep my mouth shut. I sent this out to a few news sites and thought I should post it here too:

Generally, I don’t like to publicize my opinions on the adult video industry because every time I do someone threatens to sue me or accuses me of slander. But when I saw the AVN award nominations this morning I was flabbergasted. I cannot judge any of the video or star nominations, as I don’t watch VHS tapes. I can, however, comment on the DVD nominations. Consumers often joke about AVN reviewers not actually watching the movies they review. But shouldn’t the most promoted awards in the industry be taken more seriously? AVN nominated Diva X: Brittany for Best Interactive DVD. I couldn’t get most of the segments of the DVD to work (and I have two different players for testing purposes.) A consumer reviewer describes this disc as ‘poor, sloppy and rushed’, going on to say that ‘the execution is flawed’ when discussing the interactive portion of the disc. He was being nice.

Now let’s move on to the nominations for Best Classic DVD. AVN nominated NuTech’s Debbie Does Dallas. Maybe they should include some kind of criteria for these nominations. Yes, Debbie Does Dallas is a great movie. The DVD, however, does not do the movie justice. The audio is horrendous. One reviewer commented, “Most of the movie sounds like it was recorded in the shower.” The DVD has no extras whatsoever.

Ironically AVN also nominated The Dinner Party for Best Classic DVD. The irony is that Adam and Eve is remastering this disc due to problems with the original. To quote an Adam and Eve representative (as posted on the Adult DVD Talk forum), “The current DVD does not do the title justice. Ultimate fans have been asking for a new DVD for quite some time.” A reviewer says, “It's criminal: A featureless DVD with a really poor transfer of one of the best adult films of the 1990s…. It's so bad that I actually stopped and recalibrated my home theater system to make sure there wasn't something wrong with my equipment!” Most consumers express this sentiment with more colorful language.

I realize it’s difficult to wade through thousands of movies to make these nominations. But there are people working very hard on their DVDs. They deserve to be rewarded. Maybe the DVD nominations are not as important as the video categories? Hopefully, someone just made a few typos.

Well said Steph - I love it when you get all worked up!
It's an insult to our intelligence, and only lessens their credibility, IMO. Maybe we should start our own awards here at ADT, where discriminating people actually watch the movies, have higher standards, and any starlet showing up wearing kneepads will be sent packing!

*disclaimer - the above comments are just my opinion and in no way reflect the management of ADT or any of their affiliates, so don't even think about sueing.

the thing that gets me about the noms (disregarding the gossip on gene's site regarding their total arbitrariness for a moment) is that so little seems to be left out.

In the gonzo series category -- aren't those all the gonzo series? Is this a case of 'We'd nominate more series, if there were more series..' ?!?

As far as not watching them all -- its flat out impossible to; especially since Tod's site made it sound like they cannonball thru a week or two of meetings to hammer out a list. You couldn't watch all of these movies if you never slept for two weeks -- let along having to watch the "Special feature" DVDs a few times (once with commentary, once without, etc.)

The only way to make it really work is if the nomination process is garnered from the reviews as an ongoing project. Every 10 rated film is immediately in the running, if not automatically nominated; anything below an 8 cannot be nominated, etc.

I don't understand the need for 12 best picture nominees.

The whole reason to have awards shows is to build some suspense and bestoew the "honor just to be nominated" -- if everyone is nominted, what kind of honor is that?

How can we miss you if you never leave?

So, as usual, these awards have nothing to do with reality, no matter how much Tod & Co wish they did.

Seems like Gene's got quite the ax to grind.

I'm not completely sure, but I'd guess that Gene Ross will be having nothing to do with the awards process since he is no longer with AVN.

About the nominations, when AVN initially reviews a movie or DVD, the reviewer often mentions if a movie or scene is worthy of a nomination, by calling it a pre-nom worthy. This indicates to the studios or directors to remember that when "For Your Consideration" time comes around.

Also, although all of the movies, scene, actors, etc. listed in the nominations list will be seen in the award program, for most of the categories on awards night, only about half of the nominees will be announced from the podium when the presenter says: and some of the nominees are: . The ones that are announced are the ones AVN considers best of the best, I guess.

As for DVDs, I hope that they pick ones that have not only good videos on them, but are good quality all around on the new media.

Ya know, Tricia...I also noticed that in too many of their reviews, an AVN critic will write something like "this scenes gets a pre-nom for best girl scene..." or something like that which bugs the hell out of me. It always smacks of kissing ass to the video companies, and seemed like an obvious attempt to curry favor instead of being a critical expression of opinion.

And to Steph: I absolutely agree that too many of these nominations are laughable, and seems to me that either their standards of critical review are non-existent, or completely corrupt. SIN CITY THE MOVIE was one of the worst looking DVDs I have ever seen, based primarily on the original master source, but also because Sin City DVD has a systematic habit of screwing up the chapter stops and time-coding on their DVDs, which have yet to be corrected. And as you point out, Adam & Eve has already apologized for their DINNER PARTY release [based on a mini-review from Adult DVD Empire], but AVN seems oblivious to all the problems some of their nominees clearly have.

As for the AVN Awards itself, well I regard them as being no more honest or having any more integrity than the Montgomery Burns Awards for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence.

Well, after wasting a couple of hours and a lot of money going to the AVN awards show last year... those of you that read the forum often know how fucking pissed off I am at AVN for reaming me like that.... (ok... ok... I'll stop)

The one positive was how funny it was to see how serious some of the actresses were when they won for best anal (or something like that). "I'd like to thank my mom and my dad for teaching me everything I needed to know..."

I think this forum has more unbiased, real, reliable opinions and movie reviews. We gain nothing by praising a movie or slamming it. AVN's awards are bogus for the real fans.

Hey, Oneloa:

I'm kinda in the dark on this one...what did they say about you?

Also, AVN constantly tries to claim that their ad rag has journalistic integrity moreso than any website, because, after all "they" are part of the industry. In fact, I have always regarded AVN as a kind of adult Sears catalog. Nothing more, and nothing less.

That's not to say that their magazine is not enjoyable, or a good read for all the pretty pictures/advertisements. But after taking a suck-up attitude towards mandatory condom policies of their major advertisers, and never addressing the Vivid Video edits or how their brief, capsule reviews are almost useless, I pretty much realize that their journalism and criticism cannot hold a candle to HUSTLER EROTIC VIDEO GUIDE or ADAM FILM WORLD...and of course, Adult DVD Talk!

Which kind of cheapens the whole thing, doesn't it?

I mean, I'd be pissed if I was nominated, and then otherwise ignored (i.e. not announced as a nominee) on awards night...

You're right, I didn't look at them all that closely.

Not having seen any of the aforementioned series of late, I can't comment if Anabolic's shut out was worthy, but it does seem suspect.

Were their gonzo series nominated anywhere else?

Or, on the other hand, do the studios have to submit material? I think Tricia alluded to this with her "for your consideration" mention.

If that's the case, perhaps Chris & Co. didn't submit anything in that category since they know an AVN Award won't help sell their product (and certainly not to potential investors) like it would for other companies?

Then, as we know, that's just pussy. They shuld have the balls to say to Hirsch or Orenstein or whomever "Sorry, you didn't make the cut."

I agree with those of you who have noted that the DVD nominations in many cases reflect the quality of the original film and NOT the quality of the DVD. This is particularly obvious in the CLASSIC nominations.
We all know how horrible The Dinner Party DVD is as far as quality goes, and SIN CITY isn't worth writing home about either. The VCA transfers are good, but how good are those movies? Plus there are hardly any extras on those VCA selections.
I was SHOCKED that THE TEASE (from VCA) didn't get a nomination, since it was easily the best classic release of the year (the transfer is so sharp, it looks like it was filmed this year)...I would have at least settled for ANYTHING THAT MOVES.
On a non-DVD note, I was one of the few critics (to my knowledge the ONLY one, although I am not sure) to praise the movie PRISONER OF SEX from Cash Markman (I looked at the DVD, and the VHS was nomintated). While I am pleased that the movie got a few nominations, these idiots over at AVN put it in the COMEDY category, which proves that no one (perhaps not even the studio who put it up for nomination) watches these films! While a take on the 60's THE PRISONER TV show, it's NOT a spoof, comedy, or otherwise...it's a fairly serious film.
Who's running this contest anyway....AL GORE?!

these quotes do not come from me. and he did not put a banner on his site. he linked thumbnails to our site - so people would click these thumbnails thinking that they were going to see a larger image - instead it went to divadee. excuse me for not wanting to deceive people.

I think it's a pretty common thing in the content site business model. Content sites work on the principle of generating traffic and click-throughs. Most advertisers don't care what generates the traffic, the more the merrier. Smart stores want quality traffic.

The execution of the ad campaign was actually comical. Pay for banner ads, get links attached to thumbnails of panty shots. An educational experience.

Typical, instead of addressing the main thrust of your complaint and legitimate concerns, he tries to turn the tables with ancient history, half-truths, & name calling, sounding like a schoolyard bully. These guys really start to squirm when you shine a light on them, don't they?
God, it must seem like such an uphill battle sometimes, but don't give up, Steph, we're all behind you.
And I applaud your refusal of the misleading thumbnail. I think we've all had the unpleasant experience of some of those porn sites that give new meaning to the term wild goose chase.
One time, I just couldn't get rid of this one window, it even installed itself as my desktop wallpaper!
Although porn is the main topic here, I don't really consider it a porn site, it's far more classy and intellectual, a rare gem in a sea of sludge. Hey, people with brains like sex too!

Well, whatever Mr. Drake's problem is really doesn't have anything to do with Steph's entirely valid criticisms againt the absolutely terrible DIVA X series. I reviewed the KAORU edition, and was simply amazed by how utterly crappy it was...a true waste of money. If BRITTANY (which I admit I have not seen) is anything like other volumes of this series, then Steph's statements are entirely defensible. Truth is always the ultimate defense when one exercises freedom of speech.

I'd be more concerned about generossextreme and Andrew Drake's comments if they came from almost anybody but extreme. They haven't seemed to have shown much integrity at all in the adult industry. All of us who have ever dealt with Steph (many of us back to when she was with DivaDee and we were a small thread on DVDTalk) know that she's one of the most honest people out there. Those of us who review for Adult DVD Talk know that Steph's main concern is that we're honest about the DVDs we review. When I first started reviewing for Adult DVD Talk I was worried about ripping a DVD too hard and was told to rip it as bad as I thought it deserved. A lot of support for Adult DVD Talk comes from the adult film industry, and I have to say that I'm dang proud to be a reviewer for Adult DVD Talk and somebody who cares that much about getting honest reveiws and opinions out about adult DVDs.
Okay. I think I'm done ranting and sucking up now.

Hey now everyone, where is yur sense of humor?!

Relax, enjoy the spectacle, there is so much humor is this
stuff.

Dare we forget that we are in the entertainment business?
Some of us (Diva X Producer) need to stop taking themselves so seriously!

If we win for best classic DVD (considering this sad group, we just might!)I will give out the new version as door prize with the negative AVN review as an insert.
Then I will thank God, my Mother and a few transgender fist fuckers for giving me the faith in myself to deliver such high end porn. Now where can you get entertainment this wholesome?

Re: Gene Ross and Extreme, are they still around? Thought the roaming wannabeWWF was on the road in middle america, telling the world how great they are. The Rodney Dangerfields of Porn. You get what you deserve and earn.

Don't buy into the act, Hulk Hogan is more convincing for God's sake. It is like Americas funniest home videos meets Adult. Only sadder.

Smartblonde, as always, you are right.

Astroknight, I agree with you wholeheartedly.

JKrull, as ever the voice of reason from the industry.

Steph, look at it this way, they only mention you because they recognize that you are important and respected. Their schemes revolve around generating publicity, any kind of publicity, in order to make themselves look more important than they are in actuality.

Look at some of the rants director John T. Bone directed my way on Mike Quasar's site. He feels insecure about the crap he makes and attacks the messenger. Typical of low quality porn directors.

Remember that we're all here because we wanted something more than crap shoved down our throats. As a community, we are far more pleasant to one another and far more honest. if that is contrary to the nutcase fringe out there, so be it. ;)

LOL!

I also was burned by Diva X: Kaoru, and planned to write a review of the thing trashing it when I came onto Diesel's review of it here. After reading that (and after I stopped laughing) I decided not to bother, as My Work Here Was Done (tm).

Steph, this clown seems to be standard porn-scum along with that tosser from JM productions (I won't be buying anything from those guys, ever) so I think JKrull's suggestion to laugh at the idiot is the best suggestion. I thought pixis just made shite dvds, I hadn't realised they were also using them for brains.

ah well, it -is- quite funny.

cheers,

it's too bad the industry is so afraid of bad reviews, 'cause they don't actually affect the bottom line. many people have written to me saying that they buy more porn because of our site - and not because of the price search - but because they can make educated buying decisions. what affects the bottom line is when people get burned buying crap.

OK, you're naive.

I don;t think that if you ignore deceptive practices they'll go away -- rather they'll flourish since the bright light of investigation is not upon them. You dont want to put the rock back and admire the garden while the bugs destroy your roots... (garden metaphors? Must be winter...)

The biggest problem we face is there is not more of us. RAME has been complaining and attacking he same issues here, and yet it all persists. We've been at it since '96, a.s.m. before that, and still nothing has changed...

This comes back to what Mike Quasar says (that you quoted in another thread) it doesn't matter if it's all Leisure Time or big budget Vivid fare, whatever is there is what will be rented.

Except, you should never turn the other cheek when your integrity is called into question. And like Jeff, I don't think that the bad stuff in porn will ever really disappear. Quality control is a threat to the status quo and because porn operates on the margins of legitimacy, they figure the consumers really won't press their options b/c they don't want to authorities of official society to know that they watch "smut"

i meant ignore the rantings of the bad element - not ignore the deceptive practices.

torris - i have to turn the other cheek when my integrity is called into question. if you have integrity in this industry, that alone seems to be a crime. i don't have the time or the energy for those kind of battles. if anyone believes andrew drake then they must have something in common with him. most people who have dealt with him understand my side without me having to say anything.

we have ex-advertisers who refuse to pay us the money they owe us. one claims that all the orders from our site were faked (yeah - we faked orders thru their affiliate program.) another claims that i slandered their company - and his source for this is a disgruntled ex-advertiser. i am still considering whether or not i want to publish the names of companies who have ripped us off. i'm not sure it's worth the headaches. and i don't want to sink to their level.

ok - you guys are right, the bad element won't disappear. but i'd prefer not to be swimming in it on a daily basis.

Torris- It's all about the source of the insult. If Steph were to take that crap seriously, or worry that Drake can hurt her credibility, which it can't and Steph knows it.
If anything insults from folks like that raise her credibility.

As with you, when you continue to take cheap shots, I consider the source and laugh. I am interested in credible
comments, as always your comments provide comic relief, each and every shot you take makes me more confident in my position.

Consider the source- Torris :) HA!
