When we weren't able to get emails through to Bills address recently I started doing some research into most of the major ISP's email delivery policies. We're getting too much stuff blocked by Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, Earthlink, etc. We're not on any spammer blacklists so I didn't know what was causing it.

It turns out that most ISPs maintain their own internal blacklists and one of the things that will get you on their bad side is continuing to send emails to non-existent or non-responsive email addresses.

So we now have an automated list scrubber in place. If we get three or more undeliverable responses from an ISP for an email address within 7 days we automatically unsubscribe that email address from the Weekly Fix, and forum emails and the Alert system.

So my Yahoo E-mail address is now useless for ADT communication?

Is Gmail OK?

No, it's not useless unless we can't email you. If you receive emails from ADT then you're fine. If three or more emails get kicked back to us as undeliverable in 7 days or less then we'll unsubscribe that email address from receiving the Weekly Fix, getting notifications of new forum posts, we'll block other forum memebrs from emailing you and also disable your Alerts profile.

None of this is permanent. It's designed to prevent automated mailer functions from sending mail to users that no longer participate in ADT or that have let their email accounts lapse due to non-use.

You can re-enable your Alert profile by logging into it and enabling it. You also continue to have control over receiving emails from forum members just re-enable it in your forum profile by de-selecting the "hide my email address" option in your profile. We'll have to re-enable Weekly Fix subscriptions from our end though. That's not something a user can fix on their end.

I don't recall if there's a specific problem with your Yahoo address though.

The problem is not specific to Yahoo or Gmail or xyz.com mail. Essentially any ISP that provides spam blocking services is a potential non-delivery response. It's getting more and more common that users to configure their email accounts to accept email from approved senders.

We're not in a position to pay to make sure our emails are delivered. That's what many of these ISPs want companies to do these days. They want email senders to subscribe to a service that charges a few cents per email to guarantee the delivery to certain ISPs.

In Bill's case he was using an @att.net account. He wasn't even provided the option to allow emails from @adultdvdtalk.com to be delivered. AT&T made that decision for him. They blocked us because we had an Alert system user that was no longer an AT&T subscriber. The Alert system was still sending out his daily Alert emails though. This new software I wrote over the last couple of days is designed to detect and prevent this from happening in the future. (I'm also putting the finishing touches on a new user registration system to that's more Kosher for most ISPs requirements.)

Where does it stand with AT&T now?

If you talked to them already, were they receptive, and did they remove the block?

Or - will it remain as is? that would mean that anyone that uses an att.net email account is forever blocked from using those parts of ADT that involve email, wouldn't it?

It's been fixed. I started getting the Weekly Fix and the Alert System e-mails again earlier this week.

Thanks Drew.

They removed the block but if we don't play nicely it won't go so easy next time.

BTW, your HotPop account has been auto-unsubscribed.

This is the other side of the coin then. :) AT&T blocked you due to their diligence. Your safeguards unsubscribed me because Hotpop's service is so flakey.

Is it ok by you if, when this happens, I just reenable whatever I can? If it becomes too much of a pain, I'll find some other email.

What about reenabling notification of new posts in all the threads we've been watching? Can we do that ourselves?
Above, it looks like you mentioned four items that you have automated the disconnecting, but only mentioned three when you were talking about reconnecting.

Unfortunately that is the other side of the coin.

You can't reconnect the Weekly Fix subscription on your own yet. I'll need to write a reconfirmation page for that.

I need to be able to prove (if challenged by an ISP) the date, time, email address and IP address that a user used to confirm their desire to receive emails from us. I've been logging most of these items in various forms for a long time but not consistently across all subscription types and not in an easy to reference way. I've been rewriting most of this code recently. The data itself isn't as important as being able to prove that we have a system of tracking signups, removal requests and automated list scrubbers. I also need to be able to prove that I can track/detect that someone on our network is using our email services (either a my.adt account, regular email account, or send-thru-forum emails) to spam people. This I can do I just need to be able to document it if requested.

I will be removing the email feature in the forum soon. It will transistion to a private messages mailbox-like feature in the forum profile area with email notifications of new messages. We currently allow users to specify their own reply-to address and many do not enter valid email addresses. This hurts us and makes us look like spammers so I have to correct that situation.

It seems like that will be a better system. I was subscribed to the weekly fix but it appears I'm not getting it anymore. I get forum emails though, so maybe something odd happened to unsubscribe me.

No problem. You had mentioned that above.

I was asking about re-enabling email notification for new posts in all the threads we had been participating in. How do we do that?

Thanks

You can't unless you go post again in the thread. That's something I'll have to fix.

It would really be easier though to just get a reliable email account.

So that we can do it ourselves? That would be good.
I wish I'd known that there was a possibility of losing track of all those threads - I would have changed it.
