The answer to your next question is...

ImageShack

The following exchange from a previous thread about avatars should explain it for you :)

------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have created a perfectly-sized avatar to use and have read the tutorial.

The tutorial does not answer Catch-22, which is...
How do you upload your JPG to Adult DVD Talk so that you can have your pic hosted online with a URL address to link to?

Or, do you have to have it hosted somewhere else?

Please help... this is driving me crazy!
------------------------------------------------------------------------

You have to host it somewhere else.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

BB, you might check out imageshack.com its free and easy to use. Just save your avatar to your pictures folder and head to the site. Click "Browse", it will automatically open the folder. Highlight it and hit "Host it" then write down its new address and add it to your profile here and your golden.

BTW It will give you several versions of the new address, it should be the one on top that says it's for forums.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This worked just fine...
Elastigirl and I thank you.

Congrats on getting it up.

However, you need to find a different (smaller) picture. The guidelines are for a file size of 5k max, and yours is nearly three times that.

Thank Don. I didn't notice that! The new one should be close to 5k.

Mojo, just read the above tutorial. Once you have chosen your image, make sure it's the right size (5k). The use the above info to host the image. After you do that, cut-n-paste the info into the "location" section of your profile. You'll be good to go!

Check my profile and you'll see what I mean. There's no location slot for me to put it in. *feeling frustrated*

Next to the register to post link is a link for Profile at the top of the forum pages. When you click on it you'll get a pop up that asks you for your user name and password. When you do that you'll get a screen with these options:

User Name
Password 6 - 20 characters
Password Again
Email Address
ICQ Number
AIM Username
Location
view # posts per page
Subscribe to forum administrative emails
Subscribe to Adult DVD Talk newsletter
Hide my email address from forum users
Signature:

As you can see, Location is the sixth option down. Hope this helps.

And what if I want to change my avatar? Will my old avatar be automatically removed from your server?

the old avatars will still be on the server here, but they will not be displayed as part of your user to the left of your posts.

i recommend to anyone that has an avatar stored on our server to save it to your computer so you can upload it to your profile after the switch is made.

give it a whirl. to add an avatar using the new method open your user profile with the "Profile" link near the top of the page. There's now an option to add or change an avatar associated with a user profile.

The old method of displaying avatars still works but this isn't going to stick around much longer. We'll most likely make a more general announcement when we're sure that this new stuff works well.

I uploaded it, and it shows up as a current avatar, but the old link to adultdvdtalk server is there also. Which one is active?

-------------------

Oops, never mind. When I went back into my profile the adultdvdtalk link has disappeared.

I'm sure we're going to have lots of confusion at first, especially when I disable the old mechanism.

The new method is fairly easy, no?

Redish, my avatar is hosted at ADT. It loads up fine, but apparently if you have an old link you need to edit it out. I think you said that two of mine showed up. Now only one does.

My avatar is in the new location now.

DenverDon

Edited to add: yes, very simple process. A lot easier than trying to explain URLs and such with the [ img ] command.

We will be hosting all avatars with the new system. To convert to the new system you'll need to save your current avatar from our server to your computer. (Right-click, save file). Then upload that into your profile using the upload utility.

Question, can there be multiple avatars that you can switch back and forth with, or only one at a time?

Works fine for me too.
Had to change the lowercase "jpeg" extension to "JPG" for the system to accept it as a Jpeg.

I'm kinda curious as to why the forced Jpeg conversion.

I didn't think of the four character extension. I'll add those. It's case-insensitive though.

Sneaky.
So PNG's should've been OK, or is Explorer's PNG support still lacking?

Explorer doesn't support PNG transparency. That's really the main shortcoming.

Hmmm, maybe Drew is asking if PNG conversion is working. Don't have an answer to that since I uploaded a JPEG.

I haven't tried. I was just wondering why PNG's were also automatically converted to Jpeg as PNG files aren't animated.

The avatar I uploaded couldn't be compressed much harder with Jpeg without looking smudged.
With PNG's lossless compression it's only a little over half the size of the Jpeg.

Jpeg: 4827 bytes
GIF: 2715 bytes
PNG: 2561 bytes[/code]

No big deal, just wondering.

I'm using jpgs because I don't actually store the filename in the database. The avatar file name is a function of the member's ID. i.e. 123.jpg is the avatar for member 123.

If the bandwidth savings are that significant I may spend a little time implementing additional file types.

Depends on the image type.
PNG and GIF are better for toon(ish) images with large areas of a single colour.

Ghost Pro's avatar with it's colour gradient is over the 5k limit as it is.
I tried converting it to Jpeg and could compress it down to 2k without major quality loss.

Maybe you could add a "Remove avatar" option in case people decide they don't like what they put up and have no replacement available.

Hmm, looks like it rescales the image, it looks awful now.

And now it is gone, it shows up in my profile, but not here.

Tries it with a 75x100 jpg...

Still no image showing up, Drew help please!

Jacco,

It shows up on my screen.

Also, you might try hitting refresh. If that doesn't work, then try exiting, deleting all your cookies, and then re-entering. That might do the trick.

Drew, does it rescale the image up to 100 pixels if it is smaller?

I tried to make mine smaller but it just got blurrier and more pixelated when I uploaded the smaller version.

It didn't work for me, I went through the process but a broken link was shown at the "Your new avatar image has been uploaded" page. The profile settings were unchanged.

Can any account add an avatar?

I did not see the old avatar, but no avatar. I checked a bit more, when I remove the link for the avatar it displays properly. Some more checking and source reading shows that no avatar with a link in it shows up on my system (Mozilla 1.7.3), but it works on Firefox 1.0

Hmmm...

Tried again with Mozilla 1.7.5, with link no avatar, without it shows up.

Let's try a few more browsers:
Firefox 1.0: ok
Konqueror 3.3.2: ok
Opera 7.51: ok
Internet Explorer 6.0: ok
Lynx (oh never mind)

So the problem is Mozilla specific...

Sorry Drew - I tried agin and now the upload does not work at all. The confirmation page appears, with the words "Your new avatar image has been uploaded:", but the confirmation image just shows a broken picture link.

When I refresh the forum pages, I have no avatar now.
