I have been trying to change my avatar over the past few days. I have tried more times then I can count and have used about 7 or 8 different pictures in these attempts.
I don't know what the problem is. I have been able to change it successfully three or four times and on these occasions it has happened in an instant or so. On the times when it hasn't worked, my computer acts like it is still trying to upload it (flashing "Done" over and over at the bottom left corner with the green bar graph, whatever its proper name) and the ADT system/page just says "Upload complete, processing files..." with a similar bar graph like the green one at the bottom. I have waited as long as 20 minutes and still it says the same thing.
As I wrote, I have been able to change it a few times but I can't seem to get one of the pictures I really want for my avatar to work.
I have noticed that, for whatever reason, when I try to upload the picture I had as my first avatar, it always uploads properly and immediately.
I hope I explained the problem well enough. Any ideas? Thank you.

Are you on a Mac? I've heard similar complaints from Mac users.

I checked the files you sent over and see the error. I think the avatar uploader only supports JPG and GIF formatted files. (the Bitmaps won't work). You did send one file with a .jpg extention, but our software is not recognizing it as a standard JPG file. Where did you get it? Do you know what file type it is?

Photoshop doesn't like the JPG file either. It's not able to open it. The error is "JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete.)"
I'll update the uploader page to indicate that only JPG, GIFs and PNG format files are supported as uploads. (I didnt' realize people used bitmaps for anything these days.)

Thanks, Drew.
I never thought bitmaps would be a problem as it said this at the images part of the profile page: "Avatars are automatically converted to JPG format."
I think I converted some of .jpg ones I tried from bitmaps. I guess I'll have to try ones that were .jpg to begin with.

I can add bitmap support. It would only take about 20 minutes. I just didn't realize that they were used for anything beyond creating small icons on a pixel by pixel basis these days.

I'm a complete ignoramus on these matters. I've been trying just now to dl onto my computer some images that are supposed to .jpg but my computer will only save them as .bmp. I have no idea why.
If you could add bitmap support, I would certainly appreciate it.

IE saving as only bitmaps is a pretty common problem. I think the solution is to clear your temporary internet files and restart IE.

I always did a refresh - not just F5, but shift(or was it control?)+F5 and IIRC that did the trick.

You can upload bitmap formatted avatars now.

Does the images have to be compressed when uploaded? I was going to change my avatar (10 hex 100 pixels, 6kb) but when i uploaded it it looked like complete crap because of the heavy compression.

We automatically resize and compress on our end. We also convert to JPG. We don't use an excessive amount of compression either. I think it's set at what Photoshop would consider 75% quality.
We have to compress/optimize the images uploaded to our servers. They are requested by browsers 10's of thousands of times per day. It's a ton of bandwidth.

I actually checked how much i had to compress it in photoshop to get it to the quality it ended up and it was just about 50% and if you ask me that´s very extreme compression. This isn´t really a big issue for me but at least it´s good to know that it´s no use making something extravagant when it ends up useless.
