I use AVG 9 free anti virus. Today it automatically updated itself to version 9.0.790, and asked me to restart. When the machine came back up - wups, can't display web pages any more. Both IE8 and Firefox were busted.
On the AVG forum , people are saying that it is a compatibility problem with Zone alarm firewall, but zone labs don't have a fix for it yet AFAIK.
My workaround for the problem was to disconnect from the net, uninstall AVG, and re-install an earlier version (9.0.686) that I had lying around I installed without the e-mail scanner and surf shield, and set it to manual updates only. That lets you update the virus database without accepting program updates. Now my web browsing is back to normal.
I am going to leave it this way for a few days while I wait for either AVG or ZA to come up with a patch.
I am putting this in the forum just in case anyone else has run into the problem. I hope this helps.

zone alarm has caused me the most incompatibility problems over the years. I switched over to comodo firewall and haven't looked back since.

I've been using PC Tools Firewall Plus (free version) ever since AVG (free version) went from version 8 to version 9.
No problems with anything.

Just used my laptop for the first time in months. It has zone alarm. Same problem as Licker except I have norton 10 on it. Browsers finally worked when I uninstalled the firewall and restarted.
