According to Wikipedia this is an old format but is still 'popular' due to compatabilty with Widnows Media Player. So why I can't my Windows Media Player seem to recognise or play an AVI file ?

TIA

As James says:

"you really only need ffdshow http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow"

And probably the latest xvid.

It was indeed about codecs but the point is that you don't need to install codec packs or the divx official releases full of spyware or crap like that.

All you really need is ffdshow + the latest xvid (in case of updates) and AC3 if you need it. That's all, really.
The icing on the cake would be ditching Media Player, there are players that already support all popular formats.
If you have these, and PowerDVD or WinDVD, you will be able to play every single video file.
