Since I converted to Win7 I’ve been having some compatibility problems with most AVI files. Don’t ask me why it’s only most and not all AVIs ‘cause I’m just as perplexed as you are, although I've noticed the AVIs it doesn't seem to mind are the ones I've converted from RM files??? I’ve had wonderful success so far with MediaCoder regarding converting RM files to AVI files, but is there a way to convert AVI to WMV, which my Win7 doesn’t seem to mind at all? Can MediaCoder convert AVIs to WMVs? If so how? For the life of me I can't seem to find a WMV option on the coder.

In another thread Jordan1 mentioned the iWisoft Video Converter for the purpose of merging multiple files together. However, I've found that I like it a lot for converting from one format to another.

The wmv codecs are proprietary, owned by Microsoft, so a lot of the converters out there (such as FFMpeg) don't encode to wmv. However, you can download the free Windows Media Encoder software from Microsoft. It can handle all sorts of input files.

Thanks for your help. From what I can gather now it seems as though I needed up to date drivers, 'cause the other day I uploaded a game with the latest DirectX and since then my AVIs have been behaving themselves.

I'm sure you have your reasons for wanting to convert, but have you considered using the VLC player. It plays just about any file.
