Which devalues all of the nominations, and those nominated. AVN has always been the cheerleader--not an objective reporter--for the industry; and their sexvid reviews and Awards have never been about Quality or even what's best from a business point of view. In 2010 what the industry needs is a new "feel," or re-boot, that will help it find new loyal and PAYING customers. This means a well thought out strategy and a marketing campaign that delivers the message. These nominations are another year of "toss everything against the wall, and see what sticks." And confirms for me that the people in the porn industry have no idea what direction to take the biz next--which is, in part, why the customer base has fallen so dramatically in recent years. Belladonna, Bobbi Starr, Ashlynn Brooke, Jesse Jane and Jenna Haze were all nominated for Female Performer of the Year last year (one could hardly be blamed for feeling that, for some reason, AVN deliberately nominates the larger companies' contract girls, regardless of what they've actually accomplished throughout the year. I almost had a heart attack when I saw that they actually NEGLECTED to nominate either Stormy Daniels or Jessica Drake). Jenna Haze is your reigning FPOTY and a former Best New Starlet winner (2003). Lexi Belle, Tori Black and Chayse Evans have all "moved up", so to speak; all of them having been nominated for Best New Starlet last year. I recall there being a tiny bit of uproar over Lexi Belle's nomination, in fact, since she wasn't exactly "new" at the time; she had been active at least 3-4 years prior to the nod. Both Amber Rayne and Ann-Marie Rios were nominated in the Unsung Starlet category last year. I'm actually very happy that AVN took notice of Ann-Marie and all the fantastic work she's been putting in this year but how they can herald her yet completely overlook Julia Ann (once again, relegating their love of this woman to MILF/Cougar Performer of the Year for the second year in a row) in this category is beyond me. Congratulations to Kayden Kross, Misty Stone and Nikki Rhodes (whose nomination baffles me; hadn't she stopped doing b/g? Or was that Faye Reagan? I get confused...) A huge congratulations to two very special nominees: Dana DeArmond, who I thought deserved a FPOTY nomination LAST year but to have been snubbed this year would have been a seriously GRAVE injustice; I'm glad they didn't. And Kristina Rose, overlooked last year for Best New Starlet, it seems as though AVN has finally seen the error of their ways. ------ Female Performer of the Year Will win: Kristina Rose - In my eyes, a forgone conclusion. Rose has been a consistently entertaining force of nature all year long. Other than Bobbi and Dana, I don't see anyone else in this category even coming close to upsetting what I believe to be pre-determined. Kristina will not be denied. Should win: Kristina Rose - AVN's been known to get it wrong but if Kristina gets presented the award, they'll have gotten it absolutely right. Dark horse pick: Dana DeArmond - A win by Dana would shock the world...but not me. Best New Starlet Will win: Kagney Linn Karter - The industry seems to be inexplicably in love with her. To me, the big-boobed blonde is the definition of a cookie-cutter pornstar with almost zero verve or personality to set her apart from her contemporaries but hey...she's blonde with big boobs and we know how voters and consumers seem to love those types (how else do you explain Jesse Jane and Ashlynn Brooke's guaranteed FPOTY nominations EVERY year?), which is why KLK's visibility this year has been as high as its been. Should win: Asa Akira - The complete antithesis to what Kagney Linn Karter is and represents. An all-natural Asian brunette with on-screen charisma to burn. Of course AVN will fuck her over. Dark horse pick: Sadie West - It might be a case of too little, too late but the second Sadie West was free of the confining shackles that was New Sensations, she showed us what she was REALLY made of. What that is, some may find to be borderline-psycho, over-the-top and possibly drug-fueled histrionics but you can't deny that it's entertaining. A seriously huge omission in this category, even if she has zero shot to win against the likes of KLK and Double A, is Amia Moretti/Miley. ------ For a second year in a row, it seems like the vast majority of the REAL talent can be found in the Unsung Starlet field. A lot of my favorites from last year (Kelly Divine, Phoenix Marie, Carmen McCarthy and Angelina Valentine) find themselves on this list, not to mention the likes of Andi Anderson, Charley Chase (who is my PERSONAL FPOTY), Holly Wellin (?), Kapri Styles and Savannah Stern. I though "Suck It" was much better than "Stroke It" for the all-sex category. 2. I was surprised Meggan Mallone didn't get nominated for FPOTY - although I think she only released six movies in the nom period, they were all great efforts with multiple scenes. She is literally carrying Vivid on her back at the moment, and so I thought that would get her a nom for sure. 3. Phoenix Marie should have gotten a nom for FPOTY. 4. Kaggers should win Best New Starlet and Kristina Rose should win FPOTY. Oh, and PS: 5. I was quite surprised that Jenny Densuke didn't get nominated for Best New Starlet - once again, she was only in a few scenes, but in many ways she was one of the most reliable and energetic performers of the year. Plus, Vivid has hired non-Vivid Girls, like Sasha Grey or Belladonna, to headline their recent top features. So Vivid Girls have been used mostly to promote "Vivid Events" and left on their own to promote their individual careers. [This probably contributed to Sunny Leone and Monique Alexander becoming quasi-Vivid Girls, which allows them more control over their careers.] Plus there was the Summer 2005 Exodus, when so many established & up-and-coming Vivid Girls departed. The post-2005 new Vivid Girls like Nikki Jayne, Hanna Hilton and Meggan were mostly unknowns that Vivid needed to build from scratch--and Vivid's PR department doesn't seem to be up to the task. And, when in the hell are we going to get the first scenes from Lia19? Or has that contract quietly gone south? She could have also been a Best New Starlet contender.
