Hi Shane: I take it you never won an AVN Award?...:)

As for Ramsey, who writes: "I thought it was common knowledge that those who pay Fishbein get their awards. That should explain why Vivid keeps getting awards."

No, Vivid keeps getting awards because they win in the voting. Of course, a few years back, they all but got shut out. But don't let that fact get in the way of your "common knowledge." Nor this one: Anabolic/Diabolic aren't advertisers, but that hasn't stopped them from winning AVN Awards too. Ah, facts are a bitch, aren't they?

I would hope that's not the case (fans here favorings stars who post here) but sadly, it very well might be.

The "motivations" behind it?! What? Like I have some kind of agenda against the positive recognition of adult performers? lol Absolutely NOT! Like I said in an earlier reply, I'm actually more of an advocate of such reinforcement; however, I simply believe the winning 'stars' should consider the source of such recognition.

I was never nominated and could truly care less that I was never nominated, for any award from any organization. Would I have been 'pleased' with a nomination? .. Sure. Would it have changed my 'outlook' on the industry in winning one .. I honestly don't think so!

Again, [and for the LAST TIME] there was no ill intent intended towards the performers or nominees of the award show. I had hoped the comments would have been seen as being directed toward the event itself and the 'value' of the awards.

In reading through the responses, I did think of one benefit of being an AVN Award winner .. It's a good credit to have when promoting yourself for "feature" performing. [Where adult stars tend to make a lot more money than performing in front of the camera]

Terms?! What terms? This is PORN for goodness sake! lol And I don't think "Pipe Fittings Weekly" has a 'Best Group Sex' catagory at their annual convention dinner. Although .. Who knows?!
OK .. It costs more to publish the magazine; however, when you eliminate actual content [which originally helped develop your publications subscriptions] and then replace it with ad space .. Aren't you making MORE money?!! AVN should easily be able to afford to give the customer what they're looking for, not some box (with no box cover photo) along side a few ratings stars and limited comments.
You're kind of helping me make my point with this statement .. Who cares?! If you're nominated .. Great! If you win .. Excellent! But does an AVN award truly 'change your life'? Again, I don't think so.
Again, you're helping me make a point here by saying that you (as someone who is defending the show) is "not necessarily looking forward to" attending .. but going anyway. Like I've said in an earlier reply, I can understand the "fun" in attending this kind of event .. But does anyone, outside the industry, take these awards seriously? I'm simply interested to know .. Is that wrong ?! lol

I don't think it would be any moreso than other judged events. Most people are capable of being fair. The upside would be more interaction with stars who would like the recognition and validation.

Although I'm no longer in the industry, I'm way in on attending this event! (if no one objects?) Simply to see the likes of Devinn strutting around in all her glory!

Whoever puts-on the event should consider designing the awards as glass/crystal dildoes .. At least that way, for the female performers, they're of some special value after the "notoriety" wares off. lol

In looking through responses I see that the moderators of ADT are politely 'backing away' from the idea [to which I can't say as I blame them]; however, who says we can't organize a huge ADT 'Get Together' in Jamaica sometime in '06?!! Just give me a reason to leave the "hell" that is Tampa, Florida to lounge-around naked in Jamaica. Like I said, I am in !

Which broadly removes that issue, though i suspect there would be a few reviewers who would still do the online-fanboi thing, but at least it wouldn't be the overwhelming majority.

Maybe .. In between cashing all those 'ad' checks! lol Trust me, I'm not expecting any changes to AVN's awarding process or presentation on account of my original post. Simply trying to get a variety of perspectives on the "intrigue" around 'em [the awards & show].

I'm rethinking I should have titled my original post "Are The AVN Awards Worthless?" so so many folks 'round here didn't perceive me as some 'disgruntled' ex porn star?! lol Like I said, not looking for change .. just "input"! <wink, wink>

You are 100% correct. I would never rent or buy a dvd based on whether it had a lead performer that won an AVN award or whether the movie as a whole won an AVN award. Keep preaching the gospel.

Others look at the AVN awards as something...and something is better than nothing...I guess?!?!?

The only awards that mean anything at all are the DEPAs.

And of yeah, 'everyone but me is wrong. The end.'

I might agree with you on this point if the awards show weren't 'attached' to the same people who organize a trade show taking place in the same location, at the same time! This is where the "meeting of the minds" regarding the industry's outlook (publicly, legally and financially) takes place .. not at the show. Although I'm quite sure some business deals have been made at the awards show or subsequent after-parties. lol
Point made; however, is there honestly such a thing as an "acceptable face of/to porn"? If someone who opposes pornography is watching a late-night news broadcast, and sees coverage of the awards show [attractive girls in skimpy gowns walking down the red carpet], do you honestly believe their perception of the industry is going to change? Or that the 20 to 30 seconds of coverage might attract a new fan base?

None of us can imagine the huge number of horny young men, and women!, who are turning 18 years old every single day!! .. Ultimately becoming potential fans & customers of the industry! I, obviously, don't believe it relies on one night of positive publicity to stay in business.

<< I have suddenly come .. To a conclusion. lol In re-reading this particular response [mine], I realize it may look as if I'm truly concerned about "converting the non-believers" to fans .. Which is most defintely NOT the case whatsoever! I could honestly care less about such people's opinion of the industry and I'm well aware the XXX industry can 'stand on it's own' without my "two cents". (I'm going to leave what I've already written in here, because it is how I felt at the time; however, please, don't get my 'sentiments' confused with a potential 'reality check' .. Thanks) >>

I like, and agree (somewhat), with your point that the event is good for "industry cohesion" . I believe every business should do what they can to reinforce camaraderie amongst their industry; however, after (and sometimes during) the show you'll be more than likely to hear a star or starlet mumbling [loudly] "Mother F--ker!". lol Kind of spoils the whole 'camaraderie' aspect of the evening, although I'm sure there are a few (real) 'sore losers' at every awards event, mainstream or porn, so it's to be expected.

I have already given-in to the belief [of most of the others] that the show is an elaborate "celebration" of the industry .. Or, in other words .. a very expensive party ! I can "dig it" baby! I can dig it !

Oh, my 'luscious' Tricia! I truly miss hangin'-out with you & John during the conventions and awards shows [Please don't misrepresent my original post as a 'bashing' of the great times we had at those events]. I owe the two of you a great deal for all of the fond and 'exciting' memories that came from attending a few of the AVN shows .. Thanks.

Once again (just for you) I truly did not intend to direct any ill-will toward the nominees or attendees of the event. Your skepticism and reason(s) for the awards validity mean a lot [especially coming from you].

That statement alone [again, coming from you] helps to answer a few of the questions I had.
See ... I did not know that! That's, I guess, a step toward potential progress; however, are the steps for nomination still as tedious as they used to be? I remember the 'hell' Jeff [Marton] used to go through around deadline time for video nominations! lol

Thanks so much for your input sweetie! I (for one) sincerely appreciate it.

P.S. - We may be heading to Vegas in February to potentially look for a house.

Taryn -

This post is (honestly) as far as I've gotten in reading through the responses, so I hope I'm still the first to perhaps offer my services as your "escort" for the ADT Awards?!! I'll be happy to leave hubby at home to be your date for the evening.

I agree more or less, I have never bought a magazine of AVN, but I think the awards are often a bit of a bung job & I rarely agree with their reviews.

I think CFC got 3/5 stars, pretty hardcore, but if that is what u are looking for u can't give it less that 5!

Some excellent points .. well made and well taken. It never hurts to be reassured that you're doing a good job, especially when you're 'balls-deep' with stiff cock! lol Oh, and afterwards too (while wearing a dress) I guess.
"Porn Star Bashing" is something else I don't quite understand. I can appreciate and even respect someone's right to their own opinion of a particular performer or their performance, but the people who waste their time expressing and defending their dislike (s) are beyond my comprehension!

Even certain reviewers (of adult videos) can't keep their objectivity 'at bay'. Which, again, brings into question the "integrity" of such awards shows, not just AVN, and the voting processes behind 'em.

But, as I've seen from the responses here, it's obviously NOT about the 'integrity' of the awards but rather the chance for industry people to get together and congratulate each other. That's the opinion I've developed thus far!

It certainly appears that there are overly-cosy relationships between certain staff at AVN and the big porn companies like Vivid. This and the apparent lack of AVN transparency make me think that the AVN awards are really all a mutual back-slapping exercise for those who are in the loop.

Mike -

I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to add your comments to the thread. As I've replied here (countless times) I never had an interest in either being nominated or taking home an AVN award, and [I'm quite sure] a majority of the performers currently in the industry could honestly care less if they were nominated or not as well.

If they were [nominated] .. More power to 'em baby! If they win .. Awesome! Really! I have/had plenty of "friends" and associates who were award winners and, at the time, I shared true excitement with them. But how long does that sense of 'congratulations' really last? Simply part of my curiousity I guess.

OK, there is a point I wasn't aware of; however, they're just two [one] company(ies) amongst how many in the XXX video biz?! Although I guess it would be literally impossible for EVERY porn released in a given to year to be considered for nomination. So, I guess, someone has to narrow-down the field(s).

Seeing as you're on the "inside" there Mike ... Is it true that there will be close to 100 different awards (categories) at this year's event? When someone said AVN was distributing more than 100 awards, I simply thought that it meant one hundred total .. like one to each member of a 'Best Gangbang Scene'. lol

You may not believe it, but I'm truly interested in your continued 'insight' regarding the show (and it's voting procedures). The more I, the fans and the industry know what, how & why things improve regarding the AVN Awards, the more likely we are to develop a favorable 'outlook' on the event.

It looks like there is a lot of interest and input by how quick this thread has grown! AVN and ADT would be wise to read the ideas and thoughts expressed here. ADT could become something like the Golden Globe or People's Choice awards of porn. Someone mentioned holding the awards in a tropical location like Jamaca, sounds exciting, lol!

Dang-It!! I just finished replying that it might have sounded like I was "preaching"! I'm almost annoyed (with myself) that it 'came-off' that way.

Looking at this, after what others have said, something actually is better than nothing! Every industry, especially one as profiable as the 'porn biz', is entitled to a night of splendor and indulgence while offering each other congratulations and a "job well done". Obviously, this event is 'that' night. I think I got this now. lol

I think the AVN show is awesome, it's a great event with a great Award night. I always loved it.

I'm a little bit disappointed that I wasn't nominated for Performer of the year. I think it was a great year for me and I put all my best in every single scene, I showed up every time and on time, prepared for the scene and to rock the house. But I respect AVN's decision - It's the AVN awards and they decide who will go home with a price that day.

I thank all my fans for the great support. I know you wanted to see me up on that stage but please just let the honor be there for whoever is the winner in the end.

I will again give in my best in the next year and we will see what's going on in 2007.

Same applies to the Tampa Awards Show, although the fans (supposedly) do have a say in selecting the winners [through in-magazine polls], it's always the girl or video company 'rep' from each catagory who decides to show-up that receives the award?! Things that make you go ... Hmmmmm. lol

I would hope, at this point, AVN has primarily done away with allowing advertising dollars to persuade their decision as to whom they "slap on the back" .. But yes, it was [at one time] quite a 'transparent' group of relationships. But times do change!!

I think this is the first time I've seen you publicly aknowledge your not being nominated for Female Peformer of the Year. Gracious as always and that attitude will always set you apart. Keep giving your best as you have been and your fans will always be pleased, trophy or no.

That sounds really good. I too hope that Gia agrees with you when it comes to both of you forgetting about your differences, respecting each other's views and then naturally take things to the next level. And of course that next level would be some hot and nasty make-up sex.

Well, Shane, I never thought you were blasting AVN-awarded performers, but the magazine itself for not recognizing you. Yes, you do sound disgruntled about that. Your frequent denials here are dripping with sarcastic 'sweeties'.

AVN gets a ton of respect from the New York Times precisely because of events like the awards show. The show gives the adult business credibility that it otherwise did not have - the kind of credibility that has authors like Pamela Paul and Ariel Levy freaking out.

And since you've been out of the business since 2001, according to you, why do you suddenly care about this subject...in 2005??

Where do you get this data? I could say "All pornstars and idiots" where I know that's not true... we really can't speak in absolutes, can we?

We see further down in the thread one of the performers is dismayed at her lack of a nomination. She does her job really well (Hi Katja!) and she has every right to be disappointed in not being recognized for her hard work.

She also seems to have the ability to take it in stride, and not let her lack of a nomination get in the way of her career, either.

Pachard wrote that even he cares about the awards, that they do have meaning.

How long does the meaning last? It depends on the person. It really only has meaning to you.

I go back to the Marisa Tomei (or virtually any "best supporting actress Oscar winner) example -- her award didn't really get her much action... or perhaps she just didn't know how to parlay it.

Does the Oscar still mean a lot to her? I bet it does. Does it mean a lot to casting directors? Perhaps. Does it mean a lot to marketing people? Fucking-A it does, they'll use "Oscar Winner Marisa Tomei" in any publicity they can.

Are the AVNs similar? Could be. Even you acknowledged their assistance as a marketing tool for feature dancers. productioncompanies use their awards for boxcover blurbs and the last paragraph of press releases.

There can never be enough positive re-inforcement that awards shows give to their participants.

Are there those who feel award show are bullshit? Absolutely. Am I among them, perhaps... I haven't won anything in a while. ;-)

Are the actual shows poorly produced events that last hours longer than they should? Virtually every one of them. The Oscars, Emmys, Grammy, Tonys all have running jokes about how long overtime they run. AVNs are probably no different.

For who? For you? Maybe you don't care after the nextday that your friend won an award -- they're just your friend. Maybe your friend's excitement lasts a week or two, as people she didn't see at the show continue to congratulate her after she gets home. Maybe it never goes away.

Oh yeah baby!

Although there's nothing really to be "made-up". And I'm honestly not looking for an apology. Gia, along with everyone else here at ADT, is certainly entitled to their own interpretation of my original post and have (obviously) responded accordingly.

However, some folks around here are attempting to try and 'discredit' me when it's obvious (to me) that it's the awards show itself [and it's voting procedures] that require a 'second look'. That's what I get from reading the majority of responses posted here. And THAT , in general, was the point of my original post.

Given the here-today-gone-tomorrow nature of the porn business -- especially for the girls -- I'm thinking that 20-years down the road that their awards will mean something more to them (long after any economic considerations are forgotten).

They weren't just whores fucking in movies.
Being honored by your peers -- no matter how self-serving a group they may be -- ultimately is a validation that you were good at what you did and mattered.

Not as bitchy as your bogus awards but that's oke. Most fans are smart enough to know what to buy and what not, they don't need AVN for that.

Whoa! Sheldon - "Dripping with Sarcastic 'Sweeties'"?!! lol I've already admitted and apologized for the potential 'disgruntled' tone of my original post; however, please, pardon me for perhaps adding a touch of sarcasm to this here 'reality check' !

OK, so in reading through the numerous responses, I've gained a few new (positive) perspectives regarding the awards show and the potential 'benefit' [through it's publicity] it offers to the industry; however, through all of this, is it still 'wrong' of me to question why the AVN Awards [basically an evening of the industry slapping itself on the back] receives more notoriety than, let's say, X.R.C.O. or F.O.X.E.? .. or the hopefully-forthcoming ADT Awards?!!

The New York Times .. Now there's another 'credible' name in the news business! lol Again, I (as both a former adult performer and fan of the industry) do not understand the need for such mainstream 'credibility'(?). But that's just me!

No matter how much anyone attempts to "class it up" it's still PORNOGRAPHY we're talking about here. It will never be considered 'mainstream', especially in the U.S. [with a Republican-lead government] .. And, honestly, should the industry really 'give two shits' if it ever is?! Porn is one business that will never go out of business.

According to me?! What, like I wouldn't know what year I left the industry .. and California?

I sincerely appreciate everyone's input on this topic, whether it be positive, negative or sometimes misdirected. If I wasn't interested in other's 'feedback' on the subject, I would not have spent the time it took typing-out the first post of this thread.

I saw that the posting of the AVN Nominations [here on ADT] was receiving a lot of 'traffic' and it simply brought into question .. yes, in my own mind .. the true value of an AVN Award? So I decided to ask about it, to participants of ADT, while adding-in my own (personal) perspectives/perceptions. And I'll happily 'confess' when such perceptions have been disproved.

OK, so I'm now rethinking the original post should have read [in order to avoid any potential 'conflict'] .....

This is just plain nutty.

The NYT is, for most of the world, the "paper of record" and a LOL doesn't really erase that. You don't have to agree with its politicvs, but between it and the WSJ you're pretty well covered.

And people want mainstream credibility for any number of reasons -- perhaps its to get their Warholian 15 minutes of fame; perhaps to just make more money, maybe just to see their name in the paper. I know the first time I saw my name in Variety, I was pretty stoked.

With friends like you who only want to keep it in the gutter, you're right, it will never rise up.

There is no more damaging phrase than "It's Only Porn." By devaluing it, you're preventing it from every getting any sort of respect.

Is that something to strive for?

Administrations are cyclical, so just because Bush is the White House trying to be puritanical, he's not learning that it didn't work for Reagan either.

Fuck yeah! Mainstream acceptance equals more money, andt the reason the industry exists is to make money. Don't let anyone tell you any different. the sex and the drugs and the rock-and-roll is all well and good, but really, they're in it for the cash.

And a bigger market means more cash.

Why is Steve Hirsh a gazllionaire and Vivid so successful as a company (forget about if their porn is any good or not)? because he has mainstream contracts. When you stay at the Marriot, you're seeing a Vivid title on spank-o-vision, not a Redlight District or Platinum X title. Perhaps that's why Redlight is starting to go the feature route? because it offers them other markets to penetrate, and... all together now ... MAKE MORE MONEY.

It's all marketing.

Same as an Oscar - different things to different people.

For someone, like yourself, who doesn't care about the awards, it might mean nothing. For someone else who things the awards are pretty nifty, it might mean a lot.

Yikes! I am thinking you meant to say not in place of the word 'now' in that statement?. lol But I understand your point.

You're right, we can't speak in absolutes, that's why I believe I said a "majority" [which could easily mean 51%] of the performers in the industry didn't care about an AVN 'nom' one way or the other. Past January, it's back to 'business as usual' and all these performers want to do is continue to Work!

I believe Katja's exact words were .. "I'm a little bit disappointed that I wasn't nominated for Performer of the year" . That doesn't sound, to me, as if she's 'dismayed' really? [Oh, and "Hi!" from me too Katja!]

I guess, because of the 'tone' of my original post, no one will ever believe that I honestly & truly could care less about never receiving an AVN nomination or additional publicity in their magazine; however, it is the TRUTH!

OK, I (like you) respect the opinion of our 'elder' porn stars & directors .. I consider Nina [Hartley] as one of my 'mentors' during my time in the industry (She truly educated me on a lot of aspects about the business); however, in writing my original post, I was asking for YOUR opinion on the topic .. Not Henri's.
What was the last XXX boxcover you remember seeing that featured the words "Starring AVN Award Winner Jessica Drake" ? (last year's AVN winner for Best Actress - Video). The only place these 'victories' truly get promoted are, well, in AVN?!!
Yup, got that one! And I said in the original post I was aware what an AVN Award did for marketing production companies .. But, once again, it's a promotion 'within itself' and (in my opinion) doesn't truly help to gain any additional "recognition".
That's a good point, and kind of the question I was trying to get to within the first post .. People's individual 'value' of the award (?). But I'm learning more with every response.

Wow! This has been the most emotionally charged topic I've read on ADT in a good long while. Here's my two pennies. AVN awards, as with any type of award, matter to some and don't matter to others. Even Oscars and such are painted in a negative light by some people and some of the recipients of them consider it little more than a statue (although they always make a spectacle of it on stage).

The convention and the awards show that accompanies it are more for people to network and make connections in my estimation.

The simple answer seems to be if you don't like it don't go. It seems petty to belittle AVN, their publication, convention, or awards show unless you are offering something better or at least different.

Yeah, I corrected it. Damned spell check never catches my semantic slips...

... speaking of semantics...

My dictionary defines "dismay" as "depress: lower someone's spirits; make downhearted" -- seems to be synonymous with "disappointed."
I don't doubt you don't care (well, maybe a little ;) I merely questioned why you bothered to bring up a topic you claim to not care about -- the AVN Awards.
I believe by including Pachard's quote, I was using it to strengthen my point and my feeling -- the awards do have meaning for people... just not you. ;-)
C'mon... Google "avn award winner" and see how much publcity comes up. Within the first three hits, one was from AVN announcing that "AVN Winner Jenna would be hosting...", the second was an Evil Angel page saying the "avn award winning best vignette series would be released on DVD" and the third was a store quoting the boxcover for the 'Taboo' DVD re-release calling it "AVN Award for Best Classic!" Both WantedList and Adult DVD Empire trumpet their win as "best online retail site" in every press release.

It's a publicity moniker, and its used a lot.

It assigns meaning to an audience who may be in search of it. In search of some way to distinguish the wheat from the chaff.

wow Jeff dropping some science here good work
man :o)

well i have to add my 2 to the mix here

i for one thank AVN and Paul Fishbein
why u ask for giving me a new lease
on life after the death of my little
girl and her mom i lived for a long
wile in a self made prison known as
my home destined to be a hermit until

i found Ksex
witch i have to thank Chris and Mike Rick for that

Ksex brought
me to ADT and to you fine folks here
for that i must thank Drew and Steph
for

Well after being here a wile and
speaking with the regs here they convinced
me to go to Las Vegas or to brake out of the self
imposed prison I've created for my self
and let me tell you it was the best thing that ever happened to me i got there and was treated so warmly
by some of the nicest people i will ever meet
had it not been for the AVN's and AEE i would still be in my CELL But after AVN and AEE i got more confidence
and was able to go out more and not feel so down about
it .

so Shane as u see it's not the award for me it's much more then that for me it was my second chance in life
and thank god or whoever it cam when it did and i also
want to thank those who made my first trip to LV so memorable .

i know that was long and i am sorry but i felt the need to get it off my chest thanks for reading :o)

OK, coming from a fan of Shane's ['Cumback Pussy 9' with Tom Byron a big fav scene]:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"As someone who spent seven years in the XXX biz, I still don't understand people's [performers & fans alike] fascination with AVN - The magazine or their joke of an awards ceremony?!"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

......OK, this is Shane's personal view, may not be that of others but she, as the rest of us are, is voicing her opinion. We simply reply that we agree, disagree or other an alternative view to the subject.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"First of all, AVN (the magazine) is nothing more than a glorified promotional tool for adult companies to 'push' their product to retailers. As of late, this "rag" has even elimimated the majority of reviews they used to offer [something which originally made the magazine noteworthy to both retailers and fans] in order to make room for more advertising = $$$$$! And, speaking of advertising, the more ad space a company purchases the better chance they have of being nominated for, and eventually walking-away with, an AVN award <~ this has been proven in years past!."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I dislike it where a product or insititution or business builds up on that which is clearly popular with consumers or members and then drops it as a sacrifice for something else that is less about consumers' tastes and more on that suitable to the company in question. In other words, in relation to the subject, AVN reviews were clearly appreciated but then waned in quality and then quantity because AVN prefer to concentrate on having more advertising space. However, this can be seen as a business initiative on AVN's part in order to keep competitive with its rivals. I personally feel there should be a balance between catering for your supporters and consumers and taking business steps in keeping up with or that far ahead of other competitors. Sounds great in an ideal world.

Calling the AVN magazaine "a rag" is partly where others in contrasting view feel Shane was being too critical.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"As for performers, are the girls (or guys) honestly thinking of their performance as "award-worthy" while having sex on camera?!! If so, that's a performance I [as a fan] would have no interest in watching. Are there female performers who believe, while on-set .. "Maybe if I take a few additional cocks up my ass, I'll walk away with an award come January?"! (this doesn't apply to Mila) lol"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

There are scenes where the female actress, particularly if not solely, look up pass the camera as if at the director's commands or look elsewhere like they are not enjoying their scene. Perhaps this is where they are thinking of an award-winning performance! But here I agree with Shane big time, if they are thinking of something else other than getting down to some serious (hardcore) sex action in their scene, I'd rather they weren't there.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"And what, honestly, is the notoriety that comes with receiving an AVN Award? Except for the production companies and directors who use their award as a promotional tool to retailers (and then place it on a shelf in their office and allow it to collect dust), for performers these awards are quickly deemed worthless!

It's obviously not at all like the mainstream film business, where a "prestigious" award affords you more and/or 'better' work. In the porn industry, if you're casted, show-up (not even on-time mostly), show a little 'energy' while having sex on-camera and remain up-to-date with your tests you'll continue to work .. As simple as that!"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know the critieria in choosing the best scene overall, but where one keeps me hard from start to finish, including who is starring in the scene, I'd say that is potential for Best Scene. If it wins, good; if not, OK, still was a superb scene anyway. As a performer, if I'd won Best Performer or one of my scenes was Best Scene, I'd feel damn good that something I was party to that I like doing was recognised quite prestigiously. But of course that's me. If I didn't win, OK, still enjoyed the fucking! Like Shane, I'd love having hardcore sex with others I find stimulating, the more the better, and getting paid would always be a bonus.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"If these awards were being presented and/or voted-upon strictly by fans of XXX, or perhaps unbiased "industry insiders", I could possibly understand the 'hype' and fascination (and potential benefit) of such an event; however, AVN, both the magazine and awards show, are strictly in this for the MONEY! Period (.)! Even their advertisers [their 'life's blood' financially] have to purchase seats and tables for the event. It's the same reason TV Guide produces their own awards show ... Cause they know they ain't the Emmys or Golden Globes! lol

Again, I'm just simply trying to understand people's fascination with the AVN Awards?! $250.00 of a porn fan's "hard-earned" money is (in my opinion) much better spent on .. a date!? .. food!? .. rent!? .. or, perhaps, buying more porn?!!

I say screw AVN! It's 'high' time for the ADT Awards!!!"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

AVN into the awards ceremonies for the money is understandable, it's a lucrative business. People are happy to pay for seats to attend, that's their perogative. I dont have a fascination with AVN awards but if I get to come across it, either as a feature of a programme or DVD, then yeah I'm interested to see who was nominated for what and who won. And I like seeing the adult stars turning up, looking sexy clothed as they are unclothed!

I see where Shane is coming from, her point, but while AVN magazine seem to have let down their consumers and readers in reducing their reviews, I like their awards and feel it should continue. I'm for ADT Awards too!!

Shane, sorry but I may ask that already answered, the question of a comeback??! Even as a MILTF?!?

Yay!!! My press release is ranked high on a google search.
I have to disagree.
When Cytheria won her award this year, a couple companies put on the boxcover: Starring AVN Best Starlet Cytheria.
I saw it on boxcovers for Lauren Phoenix.

And a lot of girls who feature put it on their promo cards when they go to clubs.

The other thing I really like about the AVN awards is that I feel pretty darn confident that between the nominations announcements and the awards, that the people voting have seen all the nominated people, scenes and movies. I don't feel as secure about that with other award shows.

Shane: As someone who you hopefully still consider a friend from over the many years, I have a simple question: what prompted you to start what has turned into a lengthy thread? Do you personally have something against AVN - or did someone or some thing prompt you to post it?

Just wondering...

It is to laugh
I remember that year. We were siting at the staff table and somebody noticed that Vivid was getting KILLED -- probably Susie, she kept track of such things -- and all of a sudden there was a "tie" in the Best Actress category and BOTH WINNERS were VIVID CONTRACT GIRLS, what were the odds.

I don't know Shane. When I watch good performers, I don't think they are just having sex on camera. They are expressing themselves through physical means and they are making it into an artform. Sure like dancing having sex doesn't have to be an artform. But I truly believe you can enjoy sex on camera and project a style and attitude on camera, similar to what singers project when they sing a song.

First off .. Adult Movie FAQ I hope we have both simply cum to the conclusion that we agree to disagree, on a number of subjects; however, you've made some very valid and perhaps 'thought provoking' points in your responses. Thanks.

Although ...

This statement was slightly 'hurtful', coming from the webmaster of IAFD Like I've said, I truly condiser myself an 'advocate' of the industry and especially the female talent involved in it (Really!); however, what I've posted here [on ADT], both in my original post and my responses, are simply a "check" on REALITY !

Do I hope the industry 'thrives'? .. Yes! Do I hope the XXX biz receives mainstream notoriety .. Sure! Do I hope that the girls of the business make a "butt-load" of money and move-on to 'bigger & better' things in life .. Absolutely! Do I think the porn biz needs to go-out 'hunting' for publicity .. No!

Within this topic I've simply brought into question what (if anything) AVN, and their awards show, truly offer to 'benefit' the industry and/or their fans .. All of whom post here.

Of course I still consider you a friend D.B.! You've always remained 'real' with me, even after I left the industry, so I have no reason to consider otherwise.

I honestly didn't expect this thread to receive the number of responses that it did; however, it just goes to prove that people are certainly adamant on the topic. Again [and this is absolutely for the final time], No I do not have anything personally or individually against AVN.

Through the years, both as a performer and now as a "fan", I've overheard countless people (including 'big name' industry insiders) laugh-off the credibility of AVN. When I noticed the other topics [here on ADT] related to the awards show and the corresponding responses, in brought into question .. again, in my my head .. what people's true opinions were of both the magazine and the awards event. My original post was not prompted by anything, or anyone, other than that.

Unfortunately, I think I went a little bit too in-depth with my personal perceptions [opinions] of AVN when writing my original post. I certainly hope that, through all of this, people realize I'm not a 'hateful' or 'close minded' person. I think everyone, including myself, may have learned something from the responses in this topic.

People should keep in mind, that is what ADT is here for .. Opinion, Discussion and Debate! (Sometimes intellectual, sometimes not!) lol

To be honest, now, I'm pretty-much "burnt-out" on this topic! (although I'm sure I'll keep checkin' it) May you and yours have a very Happy Holiday Season and healthy & prosperous 2006!

Peace, Love & Hugs to All!

"It's Only Porn" will NEVER help the industry, and it certainly doesn't advocate anything positive. It utterly dismisses porn as something not worth caring about. You won't see it come out of my mouth. I take porn as a genre/form/expression very seriously; even moreso as Keeper of the IAFD.

If it was only porn I wouldn't spend so much of my life supporting it; making sure it's well documented -- taking the time others don't -- its very creators, even! -- making sure credits are correct, people who are in the movie are listed and such, and those who aren't aren't -- boxcovers and credit sequences be damned.

To be ultra-cyncial, it's pretty clear the industry does not have a very high opinion of its product, and probably less so their fans. If they did, they'd take the time to get spellings right, IDs correct, etc. But why bother... it's only porn, right?

It's a dangerous cliche.

I think that question has been answered any number of times, in just as many ways... from the people who think it matters a lot, to those who like the guidance, to those who are ambivalent, to those who are defenders, those who were part of the process and now criticize same -- all walks have contributed to this thread... which to me makes it more than "only porn."

I get high when I see you go by
My oh my.
When you sigh, my, my inside just flies,
butterflies
Why am I so shy when I'm beside you?

It's only porn and that is all,
Why should I feel the way I do?
It's only porn, and that is all,
but it's so hard loving you.

Is it right that you and I should fight
every night?
Just the sight of you makes nighttime bright,
very bright.
Haven't I the right to make it up girl?

It's only porn and that is all,
Why should I feel the way I do?
It's only porn, and that is all
but it's so hard loving you
Yes it's so hard loving you -- loving you.

As a consumer I like the AVN awards. They're like a good shopping list of cool stuff to get.

I agree dude. Finally someone who is committed to making porn respectable and has an unapthetic attitude towards its societal perception. I hate to say this dude but it is painfull obvious to me that most people on this board are satified with accepting the negative perceptions of porn and are happy with the psyhdeo mainstream success of it.

I agree dude. That's why I take negative perceptions outside the industry seriously. As a performer, I won't be as militant and agressive toward my "preaching" to others to start taking smack ran against fans and escecially performers seriously because my main objective is to perform. But on this board since no one knows me or has seen my image, I really should not care if I piss people off with my alleged complaining about the apathy the industry shows towards negativity projected by the mainstream media toward porn.
As a future performer, I take porn seriously. I am having fun but I feel an obligation to the fans to present the best performance as possible. As an activist, I am committed to making some people see the serious threats against our industry and they long journey we have toward complete respectablity from society.
I agree with you. The most of the fans and much of the performers do not have high opinion of porn. If they would we would see more people verbally defending the industry by countering the massive writings and articles that deem porn an exploitive and degrading product. People who are committed in doing this and encourage others to do it would not be seen as "preachers" or "complainers" but as assets to the industry. That is why aggressive actvism that I launch occasionally on this board won't be nearly as aggressive and straight forward when I become a performer.

This thread might be tired and I have only read parts of it, but Gia Jordan makes a good point. The other porn star seems to have sour grapes. Even if your post is a month or so old.

I have seen interviews on entertainment shows and talk shows seeing past performers bashing certain people in the industry. Jenna Jameson seems to ring a bell big time.

There are awards for everything. Have you gone to Wendy's they have employee of the month awards. And the award and plague(sp) they get do hold value. I have seen them sold on ebay.

Sour grapes seems to be the case here.
