only performers are allowed to vote. women vote for women and men vote for men.
maybe also some directors' choice awards.
i don't know who votes at the existing award shows. i've never read AVN, so i don't put much stock in their awards.

Do porn performers watch enough porn to qualify as judges?

There's probably no unbiased way to do an awards show unless it was a 'People's Choice' setup with a non-partisan third party entity managing it. Consensus around the biz is that the more advertising you buy the more your chances are of winning an award. So in effect you have to buy your awards. Nothing unusual there... it's the American way.

So perhaps it would behoove you to do some research before suggesting alternatives. I mean, that is, if you're at all concerned with anyone taking you or your ideas seriously and all. Who in their right mind is going to bother to listen to anyone's proposals for change when they don't even understand the system currently in place? How did you even come to the conclusion that what exists is "broken" if you admittedly have NO knowledge of it?
Something to ponder, no?

The AVN is full of shit. Plenty of people in the industry speak of it. Plenty of consumers say it. Nobody in this thread mentioned having no knowlege of it. Nobody in this thread said anything was broken. The AVN seems to be working precisely as it was intended. Crap is crap, regardless of who makes it. Besides, lack of transparency is part of the stench. THe AVN is just an exclusive marketing entity, a minority interest within the porn industry.

No knowledge of it? I'm guessing you're referring to the posts above mine. IMDB me.
Over the years I've heard countless times from studio heads, performers, producers and every other title in the biz that the big advertisers win. Analyzing past winners... it does seem that way.
So exactly how does it work?
Good Thoughts,

For the cheap seats...
In my post, I quoted exactly who and what I was responding to. I know that's a crazy concept around these parts lately, but that's the quote function's intention.
Nobody in this thread mentioned having no knowledge of it? Then just what does, "I don't know who votes" and "I've never read AVN" mean to YOU? Nobody said anything was broken? Then why suggest another way to do things unless you see room for improvement? These are silly questions and I don't even know why I took the time to answer them especially considering the absurdity of the original post and the OP willfully admitting his ignorance of all things AVN. I'm not sure why I contributed at all. Oh yeah...to point out how ludicrous the idea of someone fixing something they know nothing about is.
It would be like me starting a thread saying I have no idea what's going on at NASA yet proposing a new way to go about space exploration.

There is no string of words in the first Crucifixio_Jones post that matches the opening post, hence no quote was made. The one word put into quotes, does not even exist in the opening post.
Regarding the AVN, many see it sucks, without knowing how it's made.
NASA compares to the AVN? Wow! This poster must have been upset.
The American Music Awards started without its founders addressing fixing the Grammys. As did Billboard, BET, MTV, etc.
I have read AVN, so I do not put much stock in their awards.

I'd highly suggest taking another look.
Because it wasn't put into quotes to quote the poster, it was intended to imply...nevermind. Your reading comprehension is obviously on the level of Master D's. I mean, you can't even see the quote in my first post (can you see where I quoted YOU in THIS post, I wonder...). To explain anything to you would be the very definition of pointless.
By the way, no worries Gary O. I look forward to seeing many more of your contributions around here. They should prove to be pretty interesting.

so who does the voting? could not find an answer in wiki or google.
i don't care if it's an event or just an online survey. just some way for performers to pick their favorites to watch and work with.

Everyone but you, Crucifixio_Jones, who has posted in this thread has had a reading comprehension level high enough to understand that the original poster was disatisfied with the AVN results. Knowledge of the bad results of the AVN awards is indeed some knowledge of AVN. Our reading comprehension level was high enough to understand that the poster was implying that he was disatisfied with the AVN results, we are sorry that it was not spelled out to accomodate the low reading comprehension level of Crucifixio_Jones.
You used quotes in the body of your post. In fact, apparently Crucifixio_Jones can not read at all, becuase you put the word broken into quotes, and broken does dot appear in that post, or anyone else's post in this thread, nor is it implied.
The reading comprehension level of Crucifixio_Jones is so low that you did not comprehend that suggesting an alternative to AVN, means not fixing AVN.
The analytic ability of Crucifixio_Jones is so low that you compared the AVN to NASA, and you compared awarding porn to space exploration.
Apparently, the analytic ability of Crucifixio_Jones is so low that you compared suggesting an awards scheme to rocket science. And your analytic ability, Crucifixio_Jones, is so low that you are the only one who needs to do research just to suggest an awards scheme to generate discussion in this porn forum.

Using quotation marks and using the "reply with quote" function on this mesasgeboard are two different things. I'd expect you to know the difference seeing as how you just just used the latter in your very own post.
I said I quoted the original poster, which I did with the reply with quote function (which you said I didn't or didn't seem to notice but it is at the start of my post as plain as day), not that I USED QUOTATION MARKS. That's a distinction that only YOU felt the need to make yet everyone else with half a brain seemed to COMPREHEND. Again, a tremendous waste of time to spell these things out for you. Putting the word "broken" in quotation marks wasn't to actually quote the OP, genius, but to allude to the point that I feel he was attempting to make. Everything in quotation marks isn't a direct quote (nor did I ever claim that it was). How do you not understand that? I'm not here to teach English but it seems that I'm obviously expecting too much when I expect folks here to have a basic grasp of it.
But since I'm FORCED to do it in this case, I'll let you in on another little secret: a metaphor is not a direct comparison, idiot. Hence I did not compare AVN to NASA nor awards to space exploration.
Being dissatisfied with AVN Awards results is not having knowledge of how they actually GET their results aka their voting system and that is the only knowledge I accused the OP of lacking, not COMPLETE AND TOTAL unawareness of AVN (at least the OP "got" it, as evidenced by his reply that he looked up WHO votes). But let me guess, your comprehension only allows you to read and take things at face value and completely literal, the absolute hallmark of stunted mental capacity...and the ability to copy and paste someone's names twenty times in one post. I'm sure that in your next post, for your grand LITERAL encore, you'll correct me by saying that you didn't use my name 20 times, only seven. I've got better things to do than to argue with people who can't even understand my argument. Moron.
Moving along...

Moving along would mean not repeating yourself, especially when you did not make any sense the first time. I, in my recent post, made no reference to you quoting the original poster, but I did point out that you put "broken" in quotation marks in your reply. Let me spell it out for you, Crucifixio_Jones. You, Crucifixio_Jones, intentionally misquoted the OP by quoting the word "broken" which was never used by the OP. You might coonsider getting your GED, Crucifixio_Jones, because as you put it, "Putting the word "broken" in quotation marks wasn't to actually quote the OP, genius, but to allude to the point that I feel he was attempting to make", is still a false quote, and instead, a writer actually uses his own words to allude to a point.
Are false quotes the reason why you claim to be a writer, but the only way you can do so is to blog anonymously. Is the position of AVN so defenseless, and are you, Crucifixio_Jones, so much AVN's little bitch boy, Crucifixio_Jones, that the only thing you can do is to attack anyone who criticizes AVN? After all, after you "quoted the original poster", all you had to do was make a statement of your own, that is why that device exists, moron. Instead you attack the original poster, another poster in this thread, and someone who is not even in this thread. Grow some balls, Crucifixio_Jones, intead of making false quotes, just make a naked attack.
No one understands what you are quoting, when you make false quotes. No one understands that you are making a metaphor when the words you choose bare no resmeblance to the subject at hand. Because Crucifixio_Jones is such a moron, I will spell it out.
The reading comprehension level of Crucifixio_Jones is so low that you did not comprehend that suggesting an alternative to AVN, means not fixing AVN. Therefore, making reference to an understanding of the AVN awards process is an irrelavant personal attack, particularly by making a false quote .
The analytic ability of Crucifixio_Jones is so low that you used NASA as a metaphor for the AVN, and you used space exploration as a metaphor for awarding porn performances.
Apparently, the analytic ability of Crucifixio_Jones is so low that you implied rocket science as a metaphor for suggesting an awards scheme. And your analytic ability, Crucifixio_Jones, is so low that you are the only one who needs to do research just to write at a 9th grade level.
Now that I have demonstrated the petty, bitchy, baseless anger of Crucifixio_Jones, move on, AVN's bitch boy.

Oh, I see now...it's personal.
My bad.
And for the life of me, I can't get why you don't understand that putting a word in quotation marks isn't "intentionally misquoting" anyone nor does it make said word a "false quote." Quotation marks are used for more than just quoting an individual directly. I also didn't realize that when someone used a metaphor that it had to in some way, bear direct resemblance to the subject at hand. That's a new one and I never that picked up in GED class. I must pay closer attention this week.
If you didn't seemingly have a grudge against a complete stranger you would see that I wasn't jumping to AVN's defense (why the hell would I?) but instead was questioning the logic of someone coming up with an alternative to a process that they don't even understand. I'd have done the same, REGARDLESS of the actual topic. It only makes sense that if you're looking to improve upon something, even by presenting an alternative, that you first understand the original, which the OP admitted that he doesn't. I said he should. I never said that he meant to "fix" AVN but when someone suggests an alternative, it's obvious to me that they find the current model flawed or "broken" <--- in some way.
But alas, it seems that you obviously have some issues to work through concerning Crucifixio_Jones aka AVN's bitch boy. You're not the first. I'm sure you won't be the last. Feel free to work through them and get more of them off your chest here. Take a number and I'll just continue to "blog anonymously" in the background.

I've wondered for quite some time how the voting actually works. I also wonder how much it all matters in the long run. Does a title actually sell more units if it's a winner? Probably so, and for me that's a bit sad. It means as with most things money dictates the result.
Case in point: We just finished a feature called The Vampire Sex Diaries; 20 days of shooting, film-style, 14 epic locations, real story, real performances, over 200 hours of editing including very complex After Effects work, shot in four different states etc. and I can say with almost absolute certainty that regardless of how good this movie is (some will love it, some will hate it) it will NEVER win best picture at any awards. Why? Because the studio that released it doesn't spend a fortune every month advertising in the trade rags. This is of course assuming the title is good enough, but it doesn't matter, it will not win. AVN was nice enough to give it a very good review and I am thankful for this, but my gut says it still doesn't have a chance. The top 5 studios always win best picture.
We tried to put the same production value we do on our HBO/Cinemax shows even though the budget was practically no-dough. But again... not a chance for a win. History proves this. I won "Best Picture" at the New York International Film Festival and the LA Film Festival in 2002 for a mainstream film I made but honestly the campaign was a big part and I think they liked the fact we had a few mainstream stars in it.
It would be very nice to have an awards system that is truly unbiased but I think even in the mainstream world that's something of a nice goal but not a reality.

I do not know which are the top five studios to which you are referring. But at the two most prominent retail porn stores in my area, there is an AVN section, usually at the best spot in the store. Odd, since AVN is not a studio. It is always the same few studios in this section. Some of the top selling titles, as listed in AVN and other pulications, are never in this section if it is not one of those studios. Also, when customers, who are new to buying porn, come into the store, the sales staff steers them to the AVN section. This is done with an almost scripted pitch and makes no sense in a store with both a feature section and a couples section.
Biased awards and biased promotion in its publication, are probably a function of money, and not unusual in other industries. But to be able to promote at the retail outlets with both position and steering, is unique and needs to be understood.

I think that part of the problem with the smaller titles is accessibility. Those nominating and voting have to have heard of and seen the title. If you hadn't mentioned The Vampire Sex Diaries in The Feature Side thread that you did, I wouldn't have heard about it until today. I've seen nothing in the way of advertising from the company. If people don't hear about the title, there is little to draw interest. Which you are doing, but it doesn't look like the company releasing it is. Which I think will ultimately hurt the title come award time as it can easily slip by unnoticed, which is too bad as from how you are talking it up and from the stills on Tabitha's site. This isn't unique to your title though. Many of the smaller releases seem to suffer from this.

Thank you for that insight bootymeister. I had no idea AVN had so much command in the brick and mortar stores. Very interesting.
KBEECH did run a full page ad in AVN for Vampire Sex Diaries but it was a bit 'buried'. Probably why no one saw it. Bummer given all the effort we put into it. Again, big advertisers get the prime spots and that translates into the exposure and ultimately the wins.

I remember a very specific example a few years ago where a director of a porn movie bitched that he received no AVN nominations for that movie at all.
After he went all over the internet to bitch and moan about receiving no nominations, AVN came out with a statement that said that the movie had never been submitted to AVN during the nomination submissions process.
You know what... because Evil Angel has so many directors, I spend a LOT of time before nominations time going through AVN reviews, consumer reviews and director input to supplement what I personally know about the movies released by Evil Angel in the previous 12 months. I then spend a lot of time actually submitting the movies, boxing them up and getting them delivered to AVN.
Voters are more likely to subconsciously (or even consciously) vote for things that they have been more aware of for a longer time period.
Gary, come September 2010, I highly suggest that you figure out a fine line between being too pushy and being a good PR person for your own movie. I like Kevin Beech a lot as a person, but he doesn't exactly have a PR team behind his company's movie releases that AVN is going to take as seriously as the PR team of Wicked or Huster or Vivid.
You seemed to have the right intention with your movie. I saw the ad for it in AVN and it sparked my interest because I've had a thing for vampires since before I realized what "having a thing for something" really meant. Best of luck with the movie.
Next topic - AVN's influence on buyers I know from personal experience that there are still many distributor buyers and store buyers who go through AVN on a monthly basis to see what's coming out. How do I know this? Among other examples, because a year ago, Evil Angel advertised a movie as having a certain name. Between when the ad was designed and the movie was released, the name was changed. A surprisingly large amount of buyers attempted to order the movie by it's advertised title, and the only place that title had ever been printed was in AVN.
Who votes for AVN Awards? There have been MANY threads here at ADT about this topic. Search for AVN Awards, AVN voting and things like that from the previous 2 years or more and you're bound to find a few of them.
The original topic I seem to recall an award show a few years ago that tried to do a peer-voted system. I truly can't remember their name. I was asked to be a voter. I had to promise that I would watch all the movies either on DVD or by using a judge's pass to watch them on HotMovies. It was a lot of work, and that sucks considering I don't even remember the name of the awards.
The thing with fan-voted things is that unless a foolproof way is put in place to stop ballot stuffing, it simply becomes a contest of which girl has the most followers on social network sites.

Thanks for the comments Tricia. That pushy to self-promotion ratio is the million dollar question. I've been nom'd a bunch of times under various other names in adult and in the mainstream world even won "Best Picture" in the Fantasy Genre at the 2002 New York International Film Festival and LA Films Festival.
The first question that arises when you discover you've been nominated is, "I wonder how they do the judging?"

Like I said, do some searches here about the AVN Awards voting. You'll find some interesting info on that topic, including by a couple of people who've actually been voters.

How about only viewers vote. I doubt very seriously if the critics or those reviewing the nominees are jerking off while watching the films, so what are they basing their decisions on.
