I told myself I'd stay out for the remainder of this thread, but I have to comment on the pervert label.

I have no problem being labeled a pervert... far better than being called a prude! I actually find it kind of liberating.

I think stigma is what one makes of it.

Try "pervert". That's a pretty close male equivalent. Since there's a definite, and, IMHO, completely wrong double-standard (men are encouraged / praised for their exessive sexuality and conquests, and women are put down and thought of badly or just as objects for similar behaviour - similary men seem to retain their dignity and authority, if not have it increase, whereas women are automatically assumed to be weak-willed and submissive) implying a "wrong" behaviour for which you can/should be ridiculed or made to feel ashamed, in men, would be "pervert".

Oh. And of course "gigolo" works. So you could combine the two. Call every male pornstar a "perverted gigolo" and you might have something close to the same level of implication / emotional impact as calling a female pornstar a "whore". (Actually, no you wouldn't - just looking at aybesea's reply. <grin>) So maybe there really is no equivalent. That's a shame - in one sense anyway. It's too bad the tables can't be turned. If they could, maybe people might think differently.

(I wasn't really aware of this thread until now, and I'm not going to "join in" for the sake of being righteous, but I will just state my personal opinion that (I don't think) the word should ever be used unless it's meant to be deliberately derogatory, as an insult or curse word, or as a part of roleplaying where it's explicitly asked for. In other uses I just find it to be insulting and do nothing more than reflect poorly on the person who uses it, rather than the woman against whom it's used.)

Mythsong, I think part of it is definitely gender specific. But I truly believe that part of it is just an individuals ability to accept themselves for who they are, and not to get bent out of shape by social stigma.

I know guys that would freak for being called a gigolo or pervert. I have no problem with it because the first is wrong (I've never slept with a girl for money) and the second is right (at least by the dictates of normal society ). Either way, I'm certainly not going to get bent out of shape by it!

Everything in context.
I know women who revel in calling themselves and other women whores, and they are neither whores or porn stars. I know women for whom it's a term of self-loathing and shame, but not without humor. It's a hot word in roleplay, and it doesn't strike me as insulting or misplaced when used in a porn context -- which, to me, is roleplay for pay. But, again, I'm in the camp that fully endorses the fun that can be had by reclaiming "taboo" language for subversive purposes. Of course, I live in New York, where "fag" is nearly a term of endearment, and 20-something white kids refer to themselves as "nigga." So, I guess it always depends on who's saying it to whom and why. Just don't start with the redneck jokes, or I'll have to kick everybody's ass.

While I agree that reacting strongly to certain words on their own (as opposed to words in context and/or words backed up by actions) is not necessarily a good thing, it is something that happens.

I also thought some more about the male equivalent of "whore" in relation to how it's perceived. (I stepped away from the computer to do something else and it came to me.) Stricly speaking, there is no valid equivalent. However I did come up with something that's equivalent in terms of how society looks at sexual stereotypes and gender behaviour.

With "whore", we have a woman who's taken her "role" as the "submissive" to a "new level", one in which she's "loose" and who sleeps around in order to get what she wants.

With men, there *is* an equivalent that's just as emotionally laden and which no man would ever appreciate being called. It also equates to the S/M type of movies, in which you would normally find a woman being called "whore". In such movies, the guy is domineering. He takes charge and forces himself on the woman, expecting and demanding her obedience and, sometimes, abusing her until she submits to his desire. The correct term for such behaviour, in real life, (a man forcing himself on a woman against her will, despite her protests) is "rapist".

Just as there is interplay between the submissive female and the dominant male, there is interplay between the "whore" and the "rapist". Both point directly to the sexual role being stereotyped / portrayed in terms of their behavioural "niches", and both can be equally offensive/derogatory to the person being so called. Also, in another parallel, while there is no "male" term for "whore", there is also no "female" term for "rapist". (Male whores do exist, as do female rapists, but society doesn't acknowledge them so they don't play a real part in our culture.)

Also, before anybody takes this too seriously as a personal attack, I want to say that, first of all, that's not my intent - I'm just trying to come up with some parallel - and, secondly, just as "whore" has it's use in fiction and gameplaying, so does "rapist". ("Take me, rape me. Yes, it feels good..." and so on.) It's all about one person surrendering control to another. (And those roles can easily reverse themselves in different situations. I point to The Fashionistas which, although I haven't seen I've read enough reviews of by now to have some idea of what I'm talking about, Rocco plays the role of "whore" to his female "rapists" as they dominate him.)

Interesting ideas. But just to complicate matters further... there's that part in The Fashionistas where Rocco attempts to secure a financial commitment from Caroline Pierce (he's trying to convince her to buy his clothing line) while he's dominating her (and providing what she desires sexually). At that point, he's playing the role of both the whore AND the rapist. No wonder he gives up and walks off in confusion when she refuses him.

Hi,

I just read some of these posts in this message and I really don't have an opinion. I don't see how some of you do either. But, I can say this. I did read a few posts that talked about the split personalities that (some) porn stars have, a love/hate relationship with their fans. They were referring to the love of their fans on film, but the "who cares" attitude towards them off of film. I'm in it for the money...buy my dvd and I show a little appreciation at the right time. Right?

I can speak for one porn star in particular. I had to have a simple operation a few weeks back and because of a medical condition that has haunted me in the past, I needed to take it easy for a little bit prior to the operation. She knows nothing of this or at least very little. I told her about the surgery I needed to have done and it appeared that she showed sympathy towards me. She exchange lengthy e-mails with me at least once a day for good part of August. I thought it was a really nice gesture on her part to do such a kind act. Basically, this was all I was able to do. Rest up. She even went out of her way to let me know that she wanted to know how it went after it was all done.

It's a gesture like this that makes it impossible for for myself to label any porn star (actress) as such degrating names as some of you have.

You speak of the "nasty" stuff that porn stars do on film. Well in their defense, think of some of the things you've done in life. How many of you have gone to college? I'm in college and I see what goes on around me so I think that speaks for itself. How many of you can call yourself "whore"?

Hi, justin169porn,
Just let me say how glad I am that finally someone is carrying this discussion on! I was reading it all with a deeply moving heart after I had just joined ADT more than half a year ago.
Now, on the verge of setting up my own porn agency, it really does matter how much and in what way I do care for the girls that want to become porn stars. Than when I discussed last time in this treat it was more theoretical.
But still, I do think: All these girls doing those <nasty> acts for our enjoyment do really deserve our compassion and honour.
I sincerely hope, I can live up to this in future without forgetting about all business aspects of the biz, my clients interest and those of the end consumers.

I'm also glad to see this revived, because I have some new thoughts on the matter. I now have a better grasp of certain concepts which I previously found difficult to put into words

Both science and some spiritual teachings suggest that all matter is energy, and gives off energy. Men of course have masculine energy, while women have feminine energy, but all of us have some of both. It's a yin and yang sort of thing, with one always overlapping the other. However, our society (which might be defined as "those able to access this site") is out of balance. Religion, business, athletics and general attitudes emphasize the masculine over the feminine, and this is so widespread that we often don't recognize or realize it.

Certainly, I would suggest that in porn, things are seriously tilted towards the masculine. More and more, scenes (and their promotion) are about penis size, about having multiple men poking and prodding one or two women, and/or having the women go through unpleasant activity. This often results in scenes in which the women either 1) might as well be an inflatable doll or robot, or 2) are actively turned off. They are NOT giving out feminine sexual energy, and sometimes the men aren't giving out masculine sexual either.

I can enjoy a variety of types of porn scenes, but I've come to realize what ties them together is that the men and women, regardless of the numbers present of either gender, ARE GIVING TO AND TAKING FROM EACH OTHER. This is the key to my enjoyment. There must be pleasure going both ways. If the woman/women aren't having any fun, aren't giving off some sort of sexual glow, I can't really enjoy it. This is what I meant by "sharing their sexuality with us," it must be a situation where they are turned on by the man/men, and the men are into it too (slapping five with your buddies as you each take a 15 second turn in her ass doesn't cut it).

I've been told by many people in the industry that the vibe that I seek is very difficult to get. This is why I'm glad that plenty of directors DO try. Regular readers of the forum know my particular favorites, but today it occurs to me to give a mention to Christoph Clark. His movies are full of very strong sex, yet almost always the women are fully involved. They don't "lie there and take it, " nor do they ever seem repulsed/turned off. He creates situations which make them feel sexy and sexual, and he has his men kiss the women, finger them, and show other signs of being awake and alive, yet no one ever accuses Clark of producing "Vivid-type crap" or similar oft-repeated insults. I'm pleased that as we get to late 2003, the situation in my estimation remains one with plenty of shared sexuality scenes, even if the mass of movies are still mediocre at best.

Hi Speelie,
I hope all is well with you, I would like to add my thoughts on this thread, I hope my english will be good enough.
I had never seen any disrepectful behavior in a porn set, I mean everybody is educated and the same as in normal live women are treated with maximum respect.
To me as an actor and director the most important is to see a women enjoying sex, by herself, wiyh boys, girls and as hard as it can get but always with everyone involved enjoying it, I think the sexual game is always passionate and intense and during this game in the sexual act we can use words that have to be understood in that context, because depending on your partenaire there´s always a role of domination, not always the male, and in this situations you´ll say and do things that are only applicable to that moment.
And about if you do sex for money you´re a whore, then I am, but you see I think we all work for money, that is how our society works, so whatever job that you choose to do the important is that you like it and adds something to your live, at the end the important is who we are as a person, and I can assure you that as an example,Sophie and I have been happily in the adult industry for a long time, enjoying sex on camera, and to me she ´s the most wonderful person I had ever met.

Hi Toni & Sophie, perhaps you've seen the reviews I have written for several of your movies, along with a number of Nacho ones in which you were a major contributor. As well, you might remember I chatted with you several times in Vegas in January, talking about your style of moviemaking. I always hold you up as an example of a director (and producer, since Sophie is quite involved, I realize) who DOES capture the sort of vibe I want to see.

I don't think that the sets for some other directors are cruel, mean-spirited places, but what comes across onscreen as the final product often lacks any sign of the women enjoying themselves. As an aside, I do notice men behaving differently for different directors, and a prime example is David Perry. I have discussed this privately with some friends, and we are in agreement that there are times when Perry seems barely awake, and when having sex with one more pretty girl is apparently a chore for him. Yet when he works for you, Toni, he always seems to be in full "Romeo" mode, paying attention to the girl(s) and having fun. Things like this make a big difference, because they affect the overall mood of a scene, and more directly, the women of course respond better if the guy isn't distant and aloof.

For your curiosity, Toni, here's the example I have noticed which most shows the different vibe of your movies to many others. You shot a two-part scene of Vanda found on the opening part of Hardcore Innocence 1. I have seen Vanda probably 20 times or more, and she often has a sort of sad look in her eyes, as she goes along with whatever acts the director requests. But in HI1 (and also Killer Pussy 4 from the same time), she's happy and smiling, and is easily the sexiest I have ever seen her. She even gives you the quick little kiss on your nose to show you how she is feeling. That is what I want to see!

Hi Speelie,
I do remember you perfectly from Vegas, we chated by the Private booth, thanks for the nice reviews.
You explain better what i like to shoot, than I could probably do, and I´m glad you noticed that in my friend David, for me the most important is that everyone enjoys.

I see this thread has not had posts in a couple of days but I just have to add my two cents. Chicks that perform for the camera, rock! Call them what you wish but I really appreciate their uninhibited way of making money that entertains the rest of us. Some are better than others but they are all great!!!

I think the male equivalent to a slut is a womanizer. A man who proudly devours and consumes feminine sexuality. Critics, contend that a womanzier disrespects women and a slut disrespects herself(notice the slight difference). We don't have to accept that connatation. We can flip the insult and negative image of those words into a postitive. However, I am very cautious of young guys in porn shops using slut. I always wonder if they are using it in a demeaning way. Unfortunately many of them are using the word literally.

how many people got banned in the course of this one? was it a record? and how many banned users made appearances? it's kind of historic.

Happy Birthday!!!!

Many vivid scenes already have kissing, fingering, eating pussy as well as DP, ass to mouth and facials. Vivid has the nastiness of raincoater appeal and the sensuality of non-intercourse sexuality.

David Perry seems like he was enjoying it with Silvia Saint. I don't know. I think each porn fan look for different cues of genuine sex. FAN A may think very vocal sexual expression is a sign of fakeness while Fan B sees it as a cue of being real. It may be due to how people have sex in their real lives.

That's always been my philosophy.

I've always thought that the girls in porn who truly hate what they are doing give the real whores and sluts a bad name. Go figure.

I absolutely love the girls in this business and can't say anything derogatory about most of them!! Where would we be with them? The girls that truly enjoy what and who they are doing always give the best performances. Even the slightest disinterest comes through on camera. To be "slut" in this business or out of this business is not a bad thing at all!!

I have these burning questions:

1. Why do these men feel they are better when most of these same men would have sex with these women on film for money? Common sense should tell them that they would be whores (if we used their own defintion.).

2. How come the male performers who are having sex with these women being praised, as "studs" and "pimps" from the same men? The last time I checked male performers are having sex for money too.

I just don't understand the logic. Do you?

The funny thing is that I have seen men pack it in during sex scenes with hot women. ONe performer had a lovely oppurtunity to bang two hot women in a gangbang scene. While waiting his turn the dude is sleeping. Come on man, you have the opportunity of the lifetime and you are treating it like nothing. If any contract girl acted this way, they would be vilified.

Hi, Bill. This is the type of attitude that gives porn a bad name. This guy reflects the immaturity and distorted thinking some porn viewers have. Unfortunatley, at least 25% watch the very porn they find degrading.

Honey, may I ask this question. Isn't Jeff's behavior the epitome of hyporcrisy. Men who make such statements often borrow some of the ideas in these movies and apply them in their romantic relationships. Yet, they still feel morally entitled to be consdending to the very female performers who aided them in their sex lives. Hilarious.

I am still puzzled why these men fail to notice that men who eat women's assholes should be viewed as "degraded perverts" according to their definition. This view from many men and some women is totally laughable.

I am right with you buddy on this one. When men or women who watch porn regularly call porn stars "whores" condescendingly, it reflects that person's hypocrisy. Most of these people would have no problems taking 100$ to be filmed getting a blow job with these babes. So I don't see how this condescending use of "whore" is not without hypocristy.

When I use the word slut and whore in porn it has positive connation. I percieve women taking charge of their sexuality and fighting the mold that society inflicts on them.

I agree but unfortunately large pockets of our male society, uses the former term in a condesceding fashion and uses the latter fasion in a prasing fashion.
It is analogous to men who view their male friend who fukks 100 women a year as cool, and a women who fukks 100 men a year as disrespecting herself. How is that when both are doing the same thing?

I don't see why it is so hard for someone not to call you a whore during a scene if you don't like that word. I can understand why people don't like to be called "whores, sluts, bitches and hoes." If I was a performer it would take me no effort not to call you those names.

I'm not sure those questions are directed at me, but since you quoted me in your post I'll respond.

People like to feel superior to other people. That is human nature. Humility comes through experience.

As for why male performers are 'studs' and 'pimps' rather than 'whores,' I can only assume it is because
a) the person using those labels identifies with them and doesn't feel he is a whore, and
b) because the person using those labels believes that those 'studs' and 'pimps' would perform for free. You can draw your own conclusions.

I feel that reason (a) is in general an excuse.
When women have sex for free with a lot of men, the doublestandard still exists. A woman is viewed as disrespecting herself if she gives "herself" away to "too many men" Yet many of the same men who hold this belief condone and encourage men to sleep with many women as they can.

I do see some validity in reason b though.

Just a thought. Some of the films where I though performers were treating sex like a job involved men. There was one popular male performer who I noticed sleeping during a gang bang scene. Would guys call him a slut or whore for treating it sex merely as a job. NOpe.

Wow. This is some thread! I think Wanker Wayne shed some light on the darker side of the industry. Personally I don't like porn that I feel is centered on degrading the female talent. I understand that porn chicks get paid to have sex. I just feel that the women who are into the industry for all the right reasons should continue to be celebrated and not devalued. I'm probably one of the more politically conservative people on this site. Unless your an extreme religious person, I don't think there is anything wrong with women or men having sex on camera, and doing it for a living. I'm sure there are many porn girls who are totally not into what they do and others who are prostitutes. This shouldn't take away from the Ashley Blue's, Ariana Jolees's, Julie Night's, Tricia Deverioux's, Kami Andrews, and Nina Hartley's of the world. If you look at mainstream hollywood, there are far more people who are drugged out and in the gutter than all the celebrities that we all know of. This doesn't reflect on others in the industry who are successful. I hate the fact that some of the women I see in all the great porn flicks are not enjoying the scene that I'm watching. As viewers of porn, we must take the good with the bad. For every Victoria Givens there are ten Malorie Marx's. As sad as it is, it doesn't take away from the greatness of Victoria's scenes. This is why I tend to stay away from Directors who obviously don't have any respect for the female talent. I like to watch directors who seem to treat the talent well. I think the female talent should be treated as good or better than the male talent. Lets face it, as good as the male talent is, people fork over there 20 bucks to see the girls. I understand that some people are into it but I stay away from titles that are infested with spitting, choking, name calling etc. This totally turns me off. I like seeing movies by Mark Wood, Jules Jordan, and the likes. Instead of degrading the talent, I like when there's a sense that the sex is fun and nasty for both the male and female talent. I like facials, anal, gapes, A2M as much as the next guy but I like it when the girl is doing it because she gets turned on by doing something "nasty" and taboo. This type of feel is exhibited by directors like Jules Jordan. There are gapes, A2M and facials in his movies, but Jules seems to have a genuine respect for the girls in his scene. He has even done a little A2M himself with Christy lee and others on occasion. As big as all the slapping, spitting, and name calling has become in porn, I hope the less degrading porn continues to thrive.

[Generalization]Pornographers/porn fans[/Generalization] and christian/islamic fundamentalists seem to have a lot in common: Both of them seem to condemn female sex workers and promiscuous women. Thats's why they use derogatory terms like "whore" or "slut".

Btw, i don't think there's a fundamental difference between prostitutes and porn actresses - both of them are paid to fuck, both of them always claim to be horny and both of them usually don't get off. I just think it's wrong to refer to female sex workers as "whores".

*sigh* Looks like it's time to come up with the ancient Chinese saying I made up myself again: "We should treat porn stars like whores: with respect".
I completely agree this is the way it should be. Unfortunately societies both in the past and present charged these words with negative connotations. Even if these connotations are basically wrong they're still there, so I won't call a girl "whore" or "slut" unless I'm sure she'll take it in the playful, complimentary way it was meant. We can compare these negative connotations to the expression "I could care less". They can both be as wrong as they want, they become pseudo-right because the bigger part of society agrees on the wrong meaning being right and because I just invented the term "pseudo-right". That pseudo-rightness differs from true accuracy about as much (or as little) as democracy differs from fairness, or law from justice. They're considered fair or just because society agrees about that. For example the death penalty is just in one country and wrong in the other. This is logically possible only because it's not THE justice but pseudo-justice in both countries only. Pseudo-justice can differ much or little from true justice, but even in a case it doesn't differ at all it's still not the fucking same. But let's not derail this thread now... after all most people on discussion boards agree derailing threads is wrong.

What I just tried to say in the most complicated way possible is that there's nothing wrong with being a whore or a slut, at least not in my opinion, so the terms aren't derogative by themselves, but their use in a wrong way made most people believe in them being derogative, so decent people are damned not to use them even when they mean them in a respectful way because these expressions are pseudo-derogative.

There are lots of similar examples. I mean, what's rude in a middle finger? Why is it less polite to show it to people than your ring finger? As far as I know nothing is so very different about that finger that could make it intrinsically rude. But it certainly became pseudo-rude in the highest degree for some reason because most people in a particular society will be offended when you give them the bird. So while there's basically nothing wrong with lifting your middle finger you better don't do it because most people think it's wrong.

Now what do we learn from all this? That we should tell women to feel bad about their sexuality so they will turn us down which will make it easier for us to live a chaste life? Well, it's your life, so do as you will, but please not on this planet, for as a matter of fact there's quite a few earth women on my "to do" list.

And Tricia, since I'm quite a newbie to porn I've not yet seen any of your scenes, but your posts on ADT created an image of you in my mind. I don't know how close it comes to the truth, but damn, I almost feel ashamed to call you a woman as opposed to a lady. I mean this in a very positive way, not that you would behave overly ladylike or something because that I could not stand. You're a lady in the sense of a woman who inspires a form of respect in me that goes beyond the one I have for every woman and should go without saying.

The greatest porn scenes are shot already :-(

I just ran across your comment, Darth. I am very honored by uour statement. I agree with your opinions and tastes in films also. I have turned down as many videos as I have done in my career. I like it rough, and nasty sometimes but with class and without degradation.

There is an obvious market for the degrading stuff and to each their own. My intent when I began was to never do anything I would have to look back on in 10 years and be ashamed of. The same holds true for the films I produce today.

Thank you again for your support.

I don't like the negative terminology applied to adult female performers either. Terms like "whore" or "slut" make me cringe. I think these performers deserve much more respect as being professionals in the entertainment business. After all, it's the women who drive this industry. It's the fact that beautiful women are willing to share their wonderful sexuality with the world that makes the industry as profitable as it is. Personally, watching porn has made me appreciate the feminine sex even more. Women are wonderful and should be treated as such!!!

Seems like the industry keeps getting more and more misogynistic, though.

The titles and themes are getting really absurd. Is it too much to ask for the adult industry to try to portray fun, healthy adult sex?

What is there for them to portray as fun? They hate women. Their only motive is to propagate that message and indoctrinate others to it.
