Hello

I have worked an a XXX store for a few years and recently I got ahold of a copy of "Behind The green door". I was terribly excited to see it because it is supposedly very important and influential on the porn business. Well, I took it home and watched it and I'm quite puzzled.

I guess it could have influenced the 'gonzo' scene as there is a strange audience in it. Also it may be one of the first mostly interracial titles. But the cum-shot sequence baffled me, I have never seen any porn so bizarre and psychedelic.

What is so special about this film aside from that it is goofy?

I believe it was one of the first porns played to a theatre audience/feature length adult film. Brainchild of the Mitchell Brothers.(Jim and Artie Mitchell). I think is more of a nostalgia kind of thing for most. The first porn or whatever. Marilyn Chambers looked great in but I wasn't super impressed with it. But, you can't compare it to "todays" porn.

Behind The Green Door was one of the first theatrical releases when porn was just coming out of the closet, so to speak. Marilyn Chambers was easily the most beautiful star to show up at that point in time. The cumshots were bizarre, but as a culture we were just coming out of the psychadelic era. I would have loved to see more of the audience participation expanded in the film. It was really getting kinky in that room.

Behind the Green Door was one of the first "adults only" films to permeate the mainstream consciousness largely due to the Ivory Snow controversy. Apparently Marilyn did some modeling a couple of years before, and her picture appeared on an Ivory Snow detergent box just before the film was released. The Mitchell Brothers seized the opportunity and got the word out that the Ivory Snow girl was in their film. As expected, everyone rushed to their local grindhouse to see the film. As a result, Behind the Green Door generated millions of dollars. Unfortunately Jim & Artie only saw a fraction of this money. The rest was made off illegal prints of their film.

As for the psychedelic aspect, on the night of the premiere at the O'Farell, the film was shown out of sequence (the reels got mixed up) and the audience never caught on.

BTW - Jim & Artie aren't the Dark Bros...just the Mitchell Brothers. You're thinking of Gregory Dark and Walter Gernert.

I saw this film a long time ago, and from what I remember, if you only saw the first 20 minutes or so of the film you wouldn't even think it was a porno film. I also remember that one scene with the cum shots, and yeah, that scene was pretty trippy with all the different colors.
