I guess "Softcore" is a bit of a four-letter word around here, but what are your favourite softcore movies?
Mine are (amongst others): The sex Substitute (and I saw the cut version) All Ladies Do It. The Fruit is Swelling (Hong Kong movies) Weatherwoman (Japan. Not really erotica, but naughty.) Sex & Zen (HK movie) Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Only kidding!)
In some ways I think softcore improves on hardcore, as, because they can't show actual sex, there is more of an emphasis on seduction and foreplay. But just when you're wanting some sex, there's a jump-cut and the scene has ended. Maybe I should watch the first half of a softcore movie and the last half of a hardcore movie instead.
A few softcore TV shows were also quite good, and that includes "The Outer Limits".
I think the series format works better with softcore, as you don't need to cram in 7 or 8 sex scenes in an hour and a half of (usually dull) erotic thriller script. The 30-minutes format allows for more vignette-type erotica, and simpler stories. "Sexy Urban Legends", "Best Sex Ever" & "Hotel Erotica" are among my favourites series.
In terms of films, I'd recommend "Forbidden" with Renee Rea & Tracy Ryan, which had no dead bodies, no crime & no femmes fatales. "Illicit Lovers" was also much fun (I've got a soft spot for Steve Curtis). MRG & Torchlight are very formulaic, but every once in a while I'll fall on a scene or movie that will rock my world. From MRG, "Passionate Deceptions" had some of the best Kylie Wyote moments, "Haunting Desires" was also pretty cool. From Torchlight, those fine purveyors of 15-minutes sex scenes and JKP-level storylines, my favour goes to "The Escort Returns" , if only because of the studly Evan Kennsington, who's in every scene. Of all those cited, "Escort" is the only one you can find unrated on DVD.
I can see a pattern called Doug Jeffery here (or Lockjaw, as I like to call him) "House of Love" had a simulated money shot, and that's the first & only time I saw that in a softcore movie. For this reason, it deserves it place in the pantheon. The scene with the masked dancer in "Losing Control" is among my favourites. Great choices.
it's a real shame that you can't get the best erotica here in the U.S. anything by Tito Brass you'll have to pay big bucks for and lets not even talk about all the Lady Chatterly's Lovers films that have come out. aside from that I would say anything with the lovely Miss Julie Strain in it would be tops on my list. two places you might want to look to find some old fashion erotica would be Absurd Online it's an Euro site so it has a nice selection of DVDs, but none can be played in the U.S. the other site is Xploited Cinema which is a U.S./Euro site, but as you can see lots there to choose from.
There was a pretty good soft core movie done not to long ago called Young and Seductive with Julian Wells and Dru Berrymore. I thought it was pretty good, plus it was a fairly dark feature.
There was one series on in the US that was on... I think Showtime called Hot Springs Hotel. I loved that one. I thought it was really funny, and the lead guy was really good looking. I can't remember who was in it by name though... Oh, and Emmanuelle in Space with Krista Allen. (Both of those were kind of my first exposure to soft core erotica). I also am a fan of Red Shoe Diaries. There was one episode with the woman who played the mom in Pet Semetary where she plays a cop... really well done.
There is actually one that I've been trying to find, but I can't. I saw it a long time ago where there is this monk who has this HUGE penis (which you never see, but it keeps making his robe pop up), and there is one scene where he is walking down a path, and he comes to a fork in the road, and then prays for the right way to go, and his penis stands up, and points towards the right way. It was something with the word Golddigger in the title.
I'll have to check out some of these recommendations, buy them of DVD. (And I wonder where my money goes!)
Another maker of good softcore is Walerian Borowczyk. His "Immoral Tales" was pretty good and "The Beast" was interesting.
Channel 5 here in the UK used to show (edited) softcore movies and TV shows. Some were so heavily edited they were useless, but others were quite good. And then the pop singer Adam Faith died, and his last words were "That Channel 5 is a bit shit, isn't it?", and so they got stopped showing softcore. However Channel 5 tries to sneak the odd softcore movie in when they think nobody's watching.
Just watched All Ladies Do It by Tinto Brass -- great fun, gorgeous women, sensationally sexy outfits and plenty of sex even if it was softcore -- sex wth context and humour, loved it.
Did you see that Brad was part of "7 Lives Exposed" 's new season ? Can't say that I'm a fan, but he's a pro. My favourite Doug Jeffery would have to be "Indecent Behavior 3" which, if you can find it unrated, is a feast for the eyes, as his marble butt can be seen a-plenty in a couple of super-hot sex scenes.
I'm going to assume Walter that "inserts" is intentional ...thanks for the info, I'm watching the editions put out through Cult Epics in the three DVD set mentioned around here some time ago. I've yet to watch "The Key" -- perhaps tomorrow. "All Ladies Do It" will need watching again -- we got distracted.

I've got to say in "All Ladies Do It" we also see many more angles used to capture the sex even if or because it is softcore. In one scene there's a stunning few moments with Claudia Koll, bent with her lover behind her -- shot from straight on -- looking at her face with him in the background, capturing her reactions, emotion and movement, we know what's going on very clearly, we get a feel for what she may be feeling and it's extremely sexy. In a hardcore film we'd have seen his dick in her pussy from every angle and little else.
La Bete "The Beast" is a good sexy movie, but the simulated ejaculation comes not from a human male, but from the beast himself. It looks like lumpy porrige ebing squeezed through the end of a rubber hose, so I don't think this is a title to hunt down.
I have also heard that the version of "All Ladies Do It" available in the US and UK are edited, so maybe it's an idea to hunt down the uncoensored original. (Maybe try the DVD sites mentioned earlier.)
For Tinto Brass, I found large parts of Salon Kitty to be hot, in spite of its heavy Nazi theme. For lighter Tinto Brass, I enjoyed Ferma Posta Tinto Brass, especially the Cinzia Roccaforte scenes.
For Borowicz's work, I still have the tape of Immoral Tales that I taped off cable TV about 10 years ago, and still watch it a couple of times a year.
Kafka thanks for the heads up on the other Tinto Brass movies, I think I'm going to get some more, we've enjoyed them very much. Over dinner last night my sweetheart was saying how sexy he thinks the films are, with all the little teasing moments, flashes of sexy clothing and the good natured fun of the whole thing. I agree.
pil008 Here's the info on the three dvd set -- a mini review that links to Cult Epics from whom I got my films. Tinto
Tinto Brass as mentioned made some good softcore movies but they are not all at the same level.I liked as well some movies with Laura Gemser as Emmanuelle. My favorite was the "Emmanuelle:Princess of Santos" if i am not mistaken at title
The version I have runs for only 85 mins, while the "uncensored" one runs 92 or so mins. Looks like I'll have to buy this release, too. Well, if it gives me a few more shots of Claudia's shapely bottom I'll be happy.
British directors Pete Walker and Michael Winner (yeah, the guy who did "Death Wish" with Charles Bronson in the early Seventies) made some classic softcore pictures in 1960's. A favorite of mine would be Walker's "Cool It Carol," if only for its perfect depiction of London in the Swingin' Sixties and lines like "She moves like a Swiss watch!"
On the other hand, Winner's "I'll Never Forget What's 'is Name" remains a potent testament of the disillusionment of the late Sixties. Sad, poignant, and very, very sexy.
There seems to be ever more 70's-80's Euro and US softcore coming out on DVD from various specialty distributors. They're usually available at the art/horror/cult movie video shops, if the town is large enough. Recently there's DVDs of Radley Metzger, Jess Franco, Joe D'Amato (Laura Gemser flicks) that haven't seen the light of day in years.
I knew Micheal Winner made numerous "cutie nudies" (if that was what they were called) before going onto making movies about murderous vigilantes. Sadly he went down from there and is best known now for selling car insurance.
I haven't heard of Pete Walker so I'll have to do some digging on him.
Another great British filmmaker who dabbled in the erotic is Ken Russell. A sadly underrated director.
I found "Flesh Gordon" erotic and funny, but I haven't seen it in years. I understand the colors are a bit washed and there is grain. But hey, it might make for a good rental.
I noticed someone mentioned Maria Ford a few posts back. Her entire body of work (especially her work for Roger Corman's Concorde/New Horizons) is consitently interesting. Her better titles for Corman have been issued on DVD under a "Maria Ford Collection" imprint.
Possibly the best Maria movie out there is "The Key To Sex" , considered a classic by the skinemax crowd. Her g/g scene with (I think) Amber Herrel paved the way for the new degree of explicitness that is now considered the norm in PPV erotica.
Flesh Gordon is an enjoyable movie, although I didn't find it that erotic. However I'm sure some hardcore was going on in Emperor Wang's throne room.
The Maria Ford Collection sounds interesting, although I don't think any of them are available in the UK. As usual I'll have to import them. Sleazy B-movies are a passion of mine.
And don't forget one of the most influential softcore movies ever: Emmanuelle. I've only seen the first movie and found it boring. To say the least.
And nobody has yet mentioned the great, late, Russ Meyer.
Some more I've enjoyed over the years: Two Moon Junction Zandalee Beyond the Valley of the Dolls Supervixens Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens Flesh & Blood Rendez-vous (J. Binoche) The Lover The Color of Night Wide Sargasso Sea Turkish Delight Devil in the Flesh Naked Obsession (M. Ford) The Rain Killer (more M. Ford) The Showgirl Murders (more M. Ford) Private Obsession Collector's Item Eu Te Amo (S. Braga) Inner Sanctum Watch Me I Like to Play Games Femalien The Turn-on Kama Sutra Aphrodite La Femme Publique L'Annee De Medusa Betty Bleu Joy Nana Dangerous Obsession New York Nights The Island of 1000 Delights Fanny Hill (the 80's UK version) Pretty Maids All in a Row pretty much anything from Axis Films lots of stuff from Something Weird Video
I remember these three films distinctly. actually, I'm not that sure about Joy though. I think it is a film that I captured while taping something one late night. when I returned to the room it had this woman in it getting fucked on a horse. couldn't believe it. guy was sittin' behind her and just slipped it in somehow.
'80s version of Fanny Hill is priceless though. would really like to have that one on DVD.
someone tell me if I'm wrong about Joy and if I'm not where I can buy it at as well.
This was a 90's TV series adapted from the original movie. There were maybe 4 or 5 installments. Zara Whites mostly had sex with Roberto Malone It's like putting Ron Jeremy in a softcore movie.
I remember a lot of Shannon Tweeds soft core stuff, but I never really remember the names. I would always catch them on late night TV when I was younger. I remember she did one with Richard Grecco or someone... and then the last one I remember was Rowdy Girls. I nearly had a heart attack when I saw her on "The Parkers" a few nights ago. I had sudden flashbacks to when I was in junior high. Scary stuff. When I was younger I always prefered Shannon Whirry over her. The Granny has to be a total piece of shit classic!
There are also a few soft core movies out there with Bobby Johnston that I remember. I think one was something like "I Like To Play Games Too" or something like that. I really liked Bobby Johnston. I think he's done some stuff on Queer as Folk recently, and I remember seeing a few nude pics of him that he did for a magazine spread. I wonder what he's up to now.
God bless 90's softcore. It was how I figured out that I liked guys. (Never was happy if there weren't enough man ass shots)
"Keko Mask" - A Japanese movie featuring a heroine who wears a red mask, cape, and boots, and no other clothing. There was at least one sequel to this. Rob Zombie used to play a short clip of this film on the big screen over the stage before his concert started.
Keko Mask is actually being released here (at least a few of the sequals). The movie is actually called Kekko Kamen. There is a short non-pornographic animated series that has been available here for a while, and it just came out on DVD. The live action is coming from Media Blasters (they have the Zero Woman series and Sumo Vixens).
