hey gang, I re-installed windows the other day and forgot to back up certain files on my hard drive, (genious, I know). I know there are programs online to help recover my old stuff I just wanted to ask if any of you had some recommendations. this happened before and my buddy c-mizzle helped me out but he's too busy thesedays and I'm going nuts w/out some of those folders, mostly pics and music. lemme know what you thinks the best options are,..Holla! lates, Von S.

I don't know BUT: Using your your HD lessens your success of file recovery because you are potentially overwriting that old data.
If you have a different computer to use in the meantime, it would be a good idea to switchover to it ASAP.

I've got a metal enclosure that an IDE hard drive conntect to. This device has its own power supply and USB connection. The computer treats this device as a hot-pluggable device essentially a USB thumb drive. They probably have them for SATA hard drives too, but my hard drive is the older IDE type.

If you installed Win 7 they are probably gone, as in not retrievable with currently available recovery software. I think Microsoft did that on purpose. After all, they know what's best for the rest of the world.
I'd try two things -
1. Run PC Inspector - Smart Recovery ==> http://www.convar.de (yeah, it's German).
2. Post a request for help on MajorGeeks ==> http://forums.majorgeeks.com/
And what ninja1 told you is important, particularly if you are trying to recover large files (pics and music). Using your drive will cause overwrites.

after reading some recovery tips I dug around and actually found all of my files, now I just gott move them out of the old.windows file into the proper folders of my new installation and then manage my disc space from there. thanx for the tips anyways, I do appreciate it. lates, Von S.
fyi; if you ever make this blunder like I did you can prolly find all of your older files in a sub folder called windows.old. once in there dig around user & program file folders and you should have all of your stuff waiting there for you. afterwards you have to manually move things around to newer/easier locations and then delete the older stuff that was overwritten by the re-install. lates, Von S>
