Can anyone recommend any titles that have immediately impressive WIDE SCREEN transfers / picture quality, and especially look good in Progressive Scan??
I just got myself a Pioneer DV-490V-S upscaling & Prog Scan / HDMI player and it already impresses on films, but noticed much of my porn is in basic 4:3 aspect ratio, which if anyone has any experience is not suitable for the Wide Screen only of digital (this seems most apparent when connecting through DVI or HDMI - perhaps Digital is to be widescreen only?).

there were several posts in ADT 'tech' recently on this topic; as most of you mail revers to 'experimental', but less to experienced, secure your info there!
Damon and Hunter: Doing it Together is a shot on film 16:9 anamorphic widescreen DVD that uses a pure 24P (23.98) image chain. It was shot at 24, edited at 24, and authored at 24; there is no 3:2 pulldown at any point in the image chain and will look outstanding on progressive displays.

You could do a search on 'widescreen'. I remember TonyC having a superb dosis of understanding about this topic. I'm a audio/video man myself, but based in Europe, and so not fully into all things NTSC (something I asumed we're dealing with in your post).
Not necessarily. I live in the UK so Pal / NTSC is all the same to me. I'm not a video/audio-phile but want the best results from my equipment, naturally.
All DVD are still at 480i! Not the 1080i! DVD recorders don't have that capable yet in the U.S. version. It might be available in the Japanese version however; but they are in a different region code!
Have to wait until Blue Light or the other become the standard - like fight between Betamax and VHS!

OK: first some basics.
NTSC is a 525 line, 60Hz interlaced system (in standard form known as 480i), and displays pictures at 30fps (Frames per second). PAL is a 625 line, 50Hz interlaced system (known as 576i), and displays pictures at 25fps.
A standard interlaced picture is divided into two halves with each of the alternate lines used to create a "field". In the next fase it will draw the alternate line and repeat the scan 50 or 60 times per second (depending on NTSC or PAL). This produces visible dark scanning lines "interlaced" between the brighter lines. This 'halving' of the picture has to take place, because an interlace none progressive display can only show half the picture at each pass of the electron-gun.
Progressive Scan (or "de-interlaced") describes a (after-) scanning process. Progressive Scan DVD requires a high scanning frequency display device such as a plasma screen or projector (all digital-input devices). Progressive scan shows both fields in one pass, so providing better picture. A standard signal is defined as 480i (576i for PAL) or 480p (576p for PAL) if it's de-interlaced progressive scan.
Progressive Scan requires special connections such as HDMI. HDMI is an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface, supporting standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. HDMI is retro compatible with DVI-D. DVI-D devices can be connected to HDMI devices with the use of an adaptor.
Besides, you were talking about other issues like widescreen transfers (maybe film to video / DVD transfers too), tipping the topic of the 3:2 pulldown process and others. I would like to link you to a site projectorpeople.com, having all sorts of additional tutorials (like on 3:2 pulldown, widescreen, more on HDMI and (de-)interlaced signals, and so on).

You will still only get 480i! 480i is the hightest resolution that is on DVDs and broadcast too! It will probably change with the new layered DVD standard if they ever find a "standard". Broadcast will stay the same for a while because of shortage in frequencies. After 2009; better/higher reolution will be in the works maybe close to the European standard but not the Japanese!
While it's true that the DVD only contains a 480i signal, when authored properly, it also contains information that allows a DVD player with a good scaler to produce a 480p signal off of that DVD that will produce a picture better than the native 480i signal will.
Newer DVD players will now scale to 720p or 1080i, but I haven't found these to produce a picture significantly better than 480p (certainly not as good as material that originates in HD)
