I think that's true although I guess one way to look at the question, to further the discussion, is whether there are any black starlets ,currently, that we think could justify that economic investment. Sometimes it's hard to predict who will be successful untill it hapens, so do we think that anyone is worth that "perceived" risk now? Personally, I like carmen hayes, she's a good performer but still has some limits (no anal etc.) that could be used later to market her more (if she agreed to start doing it) Add in the fact that she has a uniquely large natural bust size and I think she could go pretty far.
Jada fire could be another choice just from the strength of her performances alone (although she can't really provide many "exclusive" acts for a company because she's already done lots of anal/dps etc). I really liked jemeni and ayana angel also but it seems like they both left the business.
Their have been a number of black female contract stars over the years. Domonique Simone, Heather Hunter with Vivid and Midori with Video Team to name a few.
it would be great to see a Black star or newbie to get a deal with a major company. Roxy Reynolds is the best but she has a contract. i LUV Amerie Dior, Beauty Dior, Michelle Tucker. there are too many unknown dimes in "Booty Talk" and other series. i would be a great move
Black product in some cases moves faster and stronger than its white/non ethnic counterpart. If black product was not a strong seller, Zero Tolerence and Red Light wouldnt be starting seperate companies basically to sell it.

I'm assuming that the companies you're talking about are Vivid, Wicked and Digital Playground, as they are the major players in features and contract girl stables. At the risk of losing one of my favorite performers, nay, my favorite performer, to feature pap, I'd say that Marie Luv is the embodiment of all that they seem to look for in a girl. Of course they'd try to talk her into bolt ons and tone down her act, but she's every bit as beautiful as Heather Hunter, and has conducted herself in an exemplary and professional manner.
I don't know nothing about all that - contracts versus whatever other status, but wow, that trips me out that there are ANY, other "white" performers out there, ranked higher than Marie Luv.
Actually a ton of white girls are more popular than Marie Luv. At adultdvdempire if you go to the tab porn stars then in the top right box labeled popular stars click the link complete list. There you will see porn stars ranked in order of popularity. Black girls didn't even make the top 200 which was dominated by white faces with maybe 3 or 4 non-white girls in that list, unless you count Havana Ginger listed as multi-racial in position 167. The top 3 black girls are Jada Fire position 208, Alexis Silver position 229 and Marie Luv 262. If the top 200 porn stars are black-less that could give good reason why the contract stars are white. It's whats popular.
I think that a new Black Contract Girl would only be a solid move if the company is actually going to promote her to some degree. The unfortunate thing is that many girls that sign contracts do little less than a few store signings, major conventions and little less in the arena of real branding for the star. The same thing happened to Ayana Angel with her VideoTeam contract. I think it would be a complete waste of any talent, particularly a Black starlet, to NOT put the same type of energy behind her that has been put behind the Tera's, Jenna's and the like. What good is signing a Black girl, only to do nothing with her - only to justify the reason for not having a Black star in the first place?! Think Chelsea Sinclaire.
Companies always justify lower rates on the inequitable market of Black consumers - yet they don't do much in market research to figure out how to develop & sell to the "open marketplace." If Jenna Jameson can host the Video Game Awards, why isn't a Black equivilent hosting the VIBE Awards. Creating & taking advantage of cross promotional opportunites in am marketplace that welcomes a sexier image and persona is essential to developing a big name star, something that is often overlooked in Ethnic marketing.
I believe that most of the established stars, while GREAT performers, are already too oversaturated in the marketplace and would provide no brand exclusivity in order to sell effectively as a Contract Girl. Unless there is a performer out there that has a limited range of exisiting scenes, (i.e., Aurora Jolie,) that signs onto a deal and breaks out to do it all on screen. Ideally, I'd love to see a stylish, gorgeous music video girl turn sex siren as a contract star or a major label. Or a glamour model finally take the plunge into hardcore (like a Gia LaShay,) or better yet, a complete unknown girl that could be coached & styled to be the next big thing. The one thing the adult film industry is missing is artist development on a wide scale. Its done with 5% of the girls that become contract stars. I believe it can be done effectively with an ethnic star... if the right person is handling her promotion and marketing. :)
Marie Luv is long overdue for a contract. Its time for a real black woman to have one. I'm sick of the industry taking the "safe" route with the light skinned, mixed females. Heather Hunter was an example of that. They like to pick the black girls that can pass for white it seems. I wanna see 100% black females repping.
I think Marie Luv has the total package. She has the looks, skill, carisma, sex appeal, ambition, intelligence, and she easily appeals to whites and blacks without changing who she is as a person. She keeps it real.
Video Team messed up with Ayana Angel. That girl is a star but i guess they couldn't see that.
Its alot of great black females out there but nobody gives them a chance to REALLY shine. Vanessa Blue,Janet Jacme,Kitten,Obsession,Sinnamon Love, and alot of other black performers could out perform any of there white counterparts during the peak of their careers. It would be nice to see a black Belladonna or a black Jenna Jameson one day.
..On another note.....i think on some level in "any" industry people may feel threatened by GOOD black performers. Its that...and undercover racism.
My point precisely. Tiffany Mason came into the industry as a contract star for Elegant Angel. Little was done promotional wise for her. When her contract was up she picked up a second contract.. with Vivid, complete with a name change becoming "Taya." But can you name 5 of her Vivid movies? And she was a 2 time contract star! Someone like Tera Patrick with 2 contracts for 2 companies... or Devon, a multiple contract girl (for both large and mid-range companies,) have consistently had the necessary promotion behind their names to give them the push necessary for commercial success. Obviously, not 1 but 2 companies saw Tiffany/ Taya worthy of a contract. I have to question if the right amount of publicity had been used could she have become a large enough name in the industry that she'd still be active or at least.. a first name mentioned in top stars.
This phenomena of signing girls to contracts and doing little "with them" isn't unique to Black performers. It happens with all contract stars. The concept of a contract star, the way I view it, is the "old Hollywood" notion of developing a star so that you can use the movies as a vehicle to promote the star... therefore making money all the way around the board. The adult industry uses the stars to promote the movies and not the other way around. While it seems to work, just imagine if there was more branding in the business! Look at all the fans that line up every years at AVN to see the "top 5" as i like to call them, (The 5% of stars that have the publicity in the biz.) I think it would sell better - regardless of the ethnicity of the performer!
I agree with you to a degree, but what came first the chicken or the egg? The black girls that are popular in this business typically have got that way by having some sort of combination of beauty and kick ass performer. However, some of their white counterparts are lame seen wise and products of "marketing 101". If the masses are told enough that someone is the shit, then someone will be considered the shit. Now that said, the hell with a contract. That's a quick way to your favorite anal starlet being turned into a "late night cable cinemax B movie star" instead of the pure filth queen you got to know and love her for!

I agree with much of this... many of the complaints you hear from fans about contract girls is that they are beautiful, perfect, but don't offer much in leiu of heat in the their scenes. So then why are they worth so much in porn marketplace? Why do companies spend $X/ year on paying the starlet to do a minimal number of scenes plus $X amount on publicity? I'd have to say often Contract Stars are "Much Ado About Nothing..." but the right amount of telling people that someone is a star, plus the proper grooming, (i.e., makeup, styling, photography, etc.,) is often enough to sell the necessary units to make it fiscally worth it. :)
How is positioning determined ? Stats mean nothing if theres no explanation. Perhaps people who dont buy black product dont shop at AdultDVDEmpire or bother to vote.
I'd have to agree with you Micheal. Also, how many Black, Latin, Asian *& Indian stars are listed, (as individual groups,) versus how many white stars(starlets,) are listed. Also, where are the people on AdultDVDEmpire advertising their voting? The thing is... if all you ever advertise is that you sell oranges, whose going to think to ask if you have asian pears? No one, they will go to someone that they know sells those pears.
I don't think there should be a black contract chick and here's why. In my opinion I think like many things in porn contract girls are a dying breed.
Like Video Team has had dozens of "contract stars- Lacey, India, Ayana and a few others. Were they promoted like they should have been. Hell No!! Vivid girls had toy lines & did instores. Sistas were lucky to appear at thong contests.
Vivid had Heather,Tiffany Mason and a few others and what do they have to show for it??
Carmen Hayes-WCP Roxy Reynolds-Black Ice
Stop looking for tha goose that lays the golden egg. I say sistas get ya business right. Develop your self as a brand and maybe a company would be willing to invest in you. Why is it that brothas can get deals left and right and not sistas??
I think a sista could be a contract girl, but she'll always be treated like a tax write-off. If she can get the money so be it, but to be honest I couldn't tell who that white contract girls are.
I think the fact is that black girls don't last long in porn. They last about 2 years and that is it. Plus they don't much as the white girl do. Porns isn't a good choice for black woman but it good for black guy because they can get better deals, do more IR then there white court part do.

The whole contract thing seems like such a lottery to me. So many great performers are not getting contracts and we are seeing girls getting contracts before they are even making movies (or before they do b/g).
I agree that it all comes down to a willingness to promote black girls by the companies. With enough advertising and box covers I think that any of the better black performers these days could become big sellers. I was a huge fan of Heather Hunter, but I only got on to her after seeing her appear on half a dozen or so box covers first and then deciding to check her out to see what all the fuss was about.
Its not so much that the contract thing is a lottery.... it all boils down to simple economics. Why would a company invest in making a profit off an image that is so diluted? The reality is that many Black performers get into the industry for the money and not the fame, and therefore wind up doing so many movies before they realize the true value of what they are doing. By the time they do, and start treating this like a "career" they have already oversaturated the market with their image that they have to become nastier, dirtier performers in order to make waves... by then they may have earned a respectable, solid fan base - but their market value to a contract company isn't what it would have been if they'd only done let's say, 10 movies as opposed to 200 movies. If you've already done anals, DP's, gangbangs and IR or everyone else, where is the exclusivity of content for a contract company to market and sell??
I don't really care much about black woman in porn anyway, but there should be more contract black girls in porn. They are trying to find the Beyoncé Knowles of porn for that matter. But still there is raciam in adult induty to day and it not talked about but it need to.

If black woman in porn care about the money then they are making less of it. Just like in the NBA were it 90% is black who are white people love to watch them played. White woamn in porn get better marketing been the black woman do and have better line and ideal. As for the Black Guys who do porn they these days are getting paid now these days then there white court part do, You see them do more IR then black on black plus they can directed a series like Justin Slayer, or own a company like Lexinton Steele do. It just a shame that black woman do take porn and market it the right way then waste it.
as a guy who watches, i'm not all that into contract stuff. i just like seeing a performer working all companies, all titles, ect ect. buuuuuuuuuuuuuut, yeah, if a girl can get the contract, get the top dollar, top exposure and all, then go for it. of course, marie luv and jada fire are probably the top 2 choices for this, but i was also thinking maybe someone like lacey duvalle? can't argue about the look, and although she's done pretty much everything, i can't really recall anything over the top, so there would be a little leeway for a company to market something special.
Why? Maybe its the quality of the white guys that do porn... Maybe they aren't that esthetically attractive to the eye. Overall, in the last couple of years, Black women have developed the opportunity to earn the same rates as their white counterparts... if they set a rate, stick to their guns, and don't accept work for less simply because they "need" the money right then. There are companies that pay both white and Black performers shit money... Its up to the performer to turn it down. Personally, If someone offers me lower than my rate for a scene I'm not going to accept it just to get the job... I've put in my time, paid my dues, and as astrong, solid performer I know that my worth. If these young girls, white or black, aren't getting paid their worth - its because they are barely out of high school and anything over a mall rat job is better than nothing... especially with the boyfriend breathing down their neck to earn more so they ccan spend more. Agents for the most part are there to earn a living off the number of bookings the girls get. Few agents actually give a shit about building a career, artist development and longevity. If they did, you'd have fewer girls leaving the industry before they get going good.
Talk show TV and Jerry Springer made Porn "cool," and these 18 year old girls still in high school WANT to do porn now. They WANT to be stars. They leave because they don't get what they are looking for. The money is there, but as a performer you have to understand your particular niche and market to that. If you look like you stepped out of the Slauson Swapmeet you can't expect to get a Vivid Contract. These girls don't understand that eating McDonald's ever day is not helping their career... Then they don't understand why they are limited in the types of work they are booked for. If a girl wants to do high end, well paying jobs - they have to 1) present an image that can get them hired by those companies and 2) Find an agent willing to submit them for projects other than Big Booty Bitches Number 51. A girl that is a notorious flake, white or black, is not going to get the same type of pay scale as someone that is on time, comes prepared with requested wardrobe and does the things that were pre-negotiated in their deal. This isn't a black/ white issue... its a fact of business. Often, when a girl works for companies independently at a lower rate than her agent would have booked - she's setting herself up for failure long term. Years ago, yes, Black performers got paid less... but Men have always gotten less than women all the way around the board on a per scene basis. No one is up in arms about that!
Black Men get to direct porn more than Black Women for the same reason that White Men direct more than White Women. The industry is run by men... most of which, due to experience, view most of the women in the business as whores not to be trusted with large sums of money. Most of these girls don't have a stable roof over their heads, can't keep the same cell phone number for an extended period of time and are generally unreliabe as talent.. so why would they give them a large budget to produce a movie? The guys tend to be more financially stable because despite them receiving a smaller per scene pay scale, they can shoot 2 or 3 scenes a day, everyday, without worry of oversaturation. I have a guy I'm trying to groom right now to enter the industry because he has a particular niche that has yet to be filled and I KNOW would do quite well. The world is sexist... and that doesn't end with the porn industry. The way this works is women will always wind up having to work their asses off in order to get something behind the scenes... but most of them don't understand working hard and not smart to begin with.
I want to thank everyone who said that they think that I deserve a contract. If I did get one I would try my best not to change what has made me popular. If I was going by adultdvdempire then I wouldn't be nothing. I am nominated for performer of the year this year at AVN's and not a lot of black girls get that nomination, especially after being in the business for only three years. It took Jada almost 8 years in the business to get her nomination. I also have five other nominations, so I think I am a little bit more popular than what adultdvdempire's chart has to say. Companies put there money and time into there white contract girls that is why there popular. I hear guys complaining about there performances all the time. I think if the right promoting is done a black contract star can be made. It's all in how they promote there star.

I know that this is the conventional wisdom regarding talent appropriate for contract, but I disagree with it. The companies that offer contracts, at least the big ones, have an almost completely different audience than the one that's so familiar with stars like Marie Luv. They're selling glamour more than heat. Teagan might not have had 200 films to her name when she signed with DP, but what else had she not done already? I think there are several black women who can appeal to a wide audience. Ariel Alexus, Lori Alexia, Kapri Styles (you know they'd insist on bolt ons for her), to name just three besides Marie.
I don't except the assumption of "contract star" status being a good thing. What great thing has it done? How does taking a beautiful woman who fucks like a champion and obstructing her with layers of makeup, blinding light, silly costumes, bad music, kindergarten-play dialogue, and a mechanical condom-clad Chippendale reject for a partner. Why is that seen a fucking validation of her abilities?
Furthermore, how the fuck does contracts benefit the consumer?
Contracts are what led to the racial segregation of porn in the first place. They are the hell-spawn of greedy, cynical, marketing trolls who think every consumer is a fucking idiot. These are the same marketing trolls that convinced the music industry the being sexy is more important that having fucking musical talent (see Ciara, Ashley Simpson, and most new "singers" today).
I'm tired all this bullshit! I'm tired of these porn equivalents of Milli Vanilli, who couldn't fuck thier way out of a wet paper bag, being passed off as the "stars" of Porn.
Here's a novel idea. How about paying the big money to the people who can actually fuck? How about glorifying the Katja Kassin's, Jada Fire's, Kelly Wells', and Taylor Rain's, and tell these other imposters to earn their keep.
I swear, I wish for the day that Congress bans porn in hotels and on Cable TV so that these bullshit feature companies will fold and have to go into the music business.
IMHO, Fred G. Sanford (and the "G" if for "Got yo' "Pirates" right here, buddy.")
Marie you are being overly kind in labeling what some of these contract girls do as a "performance". It's a fucking shame that some of it even gets labeled as porn. Outside of probably Courtney Cummz none of those contract girls are flashing in my mind as a "wood raiser". As far as you are concerned, congrats on your nom. Along with your obvious talent, I'm sure that being with someone as reputable as Mark has not hurt your reputation (or your pocket book).
I'm not in favour of 'affirmative action' contract girls, and I don't think any serious studio owner is either...they are concerned with the bottom line period. Does anyone really think Wicked signed Carmen Hart because they felt the sudden need for a Native American contract girl? If a girl has 'the look', it doesn't matter what her ethnicity is.
If the black segment of the market is such a growing economic powerhouse (as is continually stated without any facts or figures to back it up), then surely it is only a matter of time before one of the companies in this genre goes out and gets a contract girl, or perhaps a small stable comprised solely of them? Or, given what happened to Video Team, maybe not?
I don't buy the idea that it is all down to marketing either...I can think of a few 'girls' in the industry that even Adella couldn't make a star out of. More often than not, when the subject of Jenna Jameson is bought up, some genius chimes in about how much she sucks and how all of her success is just down to marketing. If this was true, then Jenna would have no repeat consumers, as people would buy/rent one of her flicks, say 'This sucks!' and avoid her like the plague forevermore. Now, given the amounts of product Ms. Jameson shifts, is anyone truly naive enough to believe that she sells it all to first-time and one-time customers?
There are some fine 'contract standard' black girls out there in the world, but I don't see that many of them in porn right now. If Vivid (or whoever) could find a Beyonce/Rihanna/Halle quality girl, I'm sure she'd be very good business for them, but right now I don't see that kind of girl out there for them to sign up. There are/have been some decidedly good looking black Playboy Playmates, and but for the case of another time, another place, I think a girl like Charmaine Sinclair would have very quickly been snapped up for a contract.
I also think it's very sad that some people see fit to make a point about lighter skinned black girls being a cop out or safer option as opposed to darker 'ebony' girls...quite frankly, I find that to be offensive and insulting.
At the end of the day, dollars will decide the issue, so if you want to see a black contract girl, vote with your wallet and vote accordingly...when store owners and studio heads see that putting 'Black Girl X' on the cover results in a pronounced sales spike, then maybe they'll think about giving her a contract and keeping her (and her sales boosting ability) away from their competitors. If you're just going to sit around and pay lip service to the idea though, then it's not going to happen. And dare I say it, but once one big company makes a success out of a black contract girl, everyone and their uncle will be trying to get in on the act...
Thank you for your extremely fair and sobering perspective, Darkside762000. I don't like the "contract system" but I especially don't like unmerited favor.
As for you Jenna Jameson reference, I do believe that savvy marketing and the look is what it's all about. A beautiful and thin big-titted blonde is the sexual gold standard for the world. Fuck all the racio-centric affirmations and exclamations people use. I've been all over the world and I know it's true. I'm not hating her or anyone else for tapping into that reality. But, who really thinks that Jenna or Jesse or whatever contract girl is a better performer than the Katsumi or Lilly Thai or Janet Jacme? Unfortunately, performance doesn't matter as much in the contract star system like it does in gonzo.
Katsumi is a great example...great performer and catwalk quality looks. however, as one of the busiest gonzo girls around, it might not have made financial sense for her to accept a contract.
I wouldn't say Kelly Wells (for example) fits the contract girl stereotype, but I'm sure she earns as much or more than a fair chunk of the contract girls out there, simply because of what she does, how well she does it and how often she works (the latter of which is mostly due to her excellence in the two preceding categories).
There are certainly room for a black contract star, no doubt. Three that comes to mind, Lacey Duvalle, Vanessa Blue, Ayana Angel(think she has a contract!) and Jenna Brooks, like all of them.
If it's gone be a new one, well she gone have to be off the hook in every aspect to compete with the above ladies
Sinn I completely agree with your comments. This entire discussion will ultimately boil down to bigotry, racism, and stereotypes like all discussions about minorities within an environment that includes a majority. Essentially every performer in porn has a relatively short shelf-life in the industry. The difference between whether or not they are successul in that short shelf-life depends on how they are marketed by the companies they work for and if that marketablility is appealing to the people who view them. Unfortunately, black female performers have not been given this opportunity on a contract basis in porn and it's long overdue that they recieve one. I just find in hard to believe that white dominate companies like Wicked and Digital Playground will ultimately give them that oppurtunity to shine. Perhaps, the question should be directed toward these companies.
"Two Shades above the rest", - The Secluded Paradyme.
That was back when Vivid could risk something like that. they had enough contracts going around to cover themselves. In that time frame Vivid had more talented stars than anybody (Jill Kelly, Jenteal, Kobe Tai..etc.)
A young Lacey Duvalle could have pulled off a top tier contract, but she didn't seem to have the business acumen and work ethic necessary to pull it off when she first hit the market. Now Lacey could still pull it off, but she would probably have to sign on to do her first anal. Her performance has improved dramatically, not sure about her business sense. Lacey definitely has a look that is appealing to almost any market.
I'm not real sure what the advantages of being a contract star are. Jenna Jameson and Tera Patrick are the only two stars that have taken their contract status and built it into a huge following that extends outside the porn business into mainstream ventures.
Jesse Jane seems fairly popular, though not as popular as Jenna and Tera. Not sure who else would fall into that category as Teagan hasn't broken through into that super top tier status, and she may not ever do so.
I think it takes a certain look, which many girls have had, combined with a particular personality that will be saleable to the non-porn mainstream public to become iconic like Tera and Jenna. Otherwise, I'm not sure what the advantages of contract status are.
What are the advantages of being a contract girl? Is the money that much better? On average who makes more money: a contract star like Teagan or Jesse Jane or a pornstar like Belladonna who makes her own movies?
Now is the time for these studios to wise up. Not all their consumers are frustrated white men or white couples and it feels at times that that's what they are gearing these contract ladies toward. The all black companies aren't great to me for the black gals to get contracts Video Team is a prime example of it. It sucks that the make a shit load of money off the sistas and are not will to back them to make even more money. When it comes to ethnic product it feels like they are only searching for a fresh face...move em in move em out. And it sucks for the actual performers that want this as a career and not to make a quick buck. Sistas need to be more vocal and take control of their image and not to let anybody of any color bring them down. There are only two sistas that are directing and have done huge things with their career and that is Vanessa Blue and Diana Devoe and that bothers me. Vivid has god knows how many contract performers but at my stores the only starlets that get any play is Savanna, Jenna, Tera and Lanny. At times they even get lazy with promoting their stars who are white. Its laziness. Its easier to make money off of someone who already has a name than to try to build one.
Alexia being a white man I can definitely tell you there's no secret organization of desperate white men that'd plot against black porn stars' careers.:) Regarding the topic I'm sure one of the major studio will offer a contract to a black girl soon; it's all about supply and demand this days after all. Which is cool that's something I definitely want to see. I just wish they will promote her as a "new contract girl", not "the first black contract star".
I think there is a more important issue beyind contract status, which has only been danced around in this thread since the focus has been on the notion of a black contract girl. Why is it that exceptional black female performers aren't given the respect, accolades, awards, etc. that they deserve? Time and again, I have seen mediocre white women get more work, more press, and more nominations than kick-ass women like Jada and Marie. Plus, just like in Hollywood, in the realm of porn features, black women aren't considered for leading roles, since by default, the leading lady is written/imagined as white. Even pornlaw's original post --- "Do you think its time for a major studio to contract a black female star? Black product is gaining an ever larger piece of market share." --- falls into the trap of "black female performer = black product." Why does the mere presence of a black woman have to make it black porn or interracial porn? I will be very interested to see Candida Royalle's new line of couples porn by/for women of color, which I think is coming out this year.
They definitely would not be able to promote her as the "first black contract star," maybe "Their" first.. but not the first... as throughout this thread there have been plenty of Black Contract girls mentioned..
Heather Hunter Chelsea Sinclair Tiffany Mason (Under Elegant Angel)/ Taya (Under Vivid) Ayana Angel Lacey Duvalle
There have been lots of Black Contact Stars.. but no one really promotes them.. that's the real issue. The best move I've seen so far is Lacey Duvalle being listed as one of Top 10 Porn Stars of all time in their first, (and only,) Porn Star Issue and having toys made after her.. but even then... if memory serves me correctly, it was a part of her contract and not something that most stars receive residuals for.
i completely and totally agree. Its sad that if feels like this industry is soo stuck because even Hollywood has stepped it up (be it a slow step) by having more and more black lead stars and them being acknowledged for their work. its easier for them to induct them into to hall of fames than to actually acknowledge their performances. it almost says to me "Yea their scenes are awesome. But we'll give the award to the lil white gal that only did 4 movies and didn't work as hard as the black gal...you know what we'll induct her in the hall of fame in 10 years."
