It also largly depends on the culture in which the word is used which effects its connotation. In street and thug culture, it can vary from a term of endearment to an insult, whereas in more mainstream "white" culture, its almost always an insult to use. Every culture has a word to describe the "un-desireables" of their soceity, and america being a melting pot normally brands those via race, rather then smaller ethic orgins ( in a similiar culture country, e.g. france ) or by socio-econmic class. Even my famliy whos mostly middle class uses the word more as a noun or pro-noun to describe a person, and we are black.
But more on topic, id think if in a porn flick is geared to the street culture, where blk guys are fuckin white chicks, then using nigga would be more appropriate, then in an european or more "white" flim where there just happens to be a black actor.

I personally don't like the word now, but there was a time when growing up as a White kid in a predominantly Black neighborhood, the word was a part of my everyday conversation. Truthfully, I looked at it then as a badge of honor and acceptance, glad that I had friends who didn't judge me and treated me like I belonged. No one batted an eye if I said the word.
Being young and carefree the historical "weight" of the word never really dawned on me and there was a hip-hop context to it, just as there is now. That being said, I can honestly say I've seen some kids get fucked up for saying it at the wrong time to the wrong person. (God forbid you pronounce it with an "er.")
Today I look at the "N" word differenty and it's not something I use, even around those same friends when I visit the old hood.
