I'm looking forward to being able to get my porn on Blu-ray. I looked today but there is not many titles available and the price was $49 apiece. Ouch!
Anybody have any knowledge of when the price will drop so they are more affordable? Will the price be like this for a couple years, or are lower prices going to be the average within a year?

The price of Blu-ray porn is kind of a catch-22 situation. The prices aren't going to come down until sales go up enough to cover manufacturing costs with a lower price point. However, at current prices, there aren't enough people who feel that the increased quality is worth spending on.
Unlike previous technologies, I think that mainstream movies will drive the growth of the Blu-ray market, not porn. If the market grows large enough, we may see the prices of Blu-ray porn discs come down to a reasonable level.

^^^ I'm assuming that this is a statement of fact, rather than an opinion.
What factor(s) will drive that drop in price and what percentage drop are we talking about?

You will see a similar price drop for Hollywood titles. The main reason is that Blu-ray has not piqued the interest of the consumer nearly as much as was anticipated. Most people are satisfied with standard DVD and can't justify paying 3 times as much for what they perceive as a marginal increase in quality. In reality, the quality difference is huge but many people are still confused about what High Definition actually is. They buy LCD or Plasma T.V's and don't set them up correctly and/or they don't realize that they need to be watching a program that originated in HD or on film and that they need to be watching an HD channel to get the full effect. Some people just flip it to channel 7 and say "this looks just like my old TV".
Anyhoo, the price has to drop across the board if Blu-ray is to survive at all, which at this point seems unlikely. It was thought that once the format wars ended (HD-DVD vs Blu-ray) that the public would rush out to buy the winner. It didn't happen. Largely because of Sony, their onerous licensing fees and assorted red tape that slowed progress to a crawl. Now, because it costs so much more to produce a Blu-ray disc, that cost gets passed on to the consumer. It's a tough decision to drop the price because the fear is that it won't result in higher volume, just a new lower price precedent. It was also though that this holiday season, the prices would drop low enough to get the public interested, but now with a world economy on the brink of depression, maybe a sub-$200 Blu-ray player isn't that much of a priority.
But a price drop is the only option left.

I was afraid that the answer would be "desperation".

Does that mean that there will be fewer rather than more porn Blu-rays when that happens? I've always wondered whether this new business is only profitable for the companies for as long as the prices are as high as they are today. You see many companies still not releasing Blu-rays or at least not on a regular basis.
I really hope that Blu-ray porn is here to stay because I want all my porn on Blu-ray. Right now I only buy stuff that really justifies buying at these high prices like your new lesbian titles, Mike, which are really great! It's definitely the best lesbian porn on the (American) market. Please keep releasing lots of those movies and preferably on Blu-ray. :-) I was pissed when I saw that Pussy Cats 3 won't come out on Blu-ray.
To the OP and everyone else interested in buying Blu-ray porn you might wanna check out http://se.adultdvdpacific.com they currently have the most reasonable prices for Blu-ray ranging from 30-35 Dollars. I get all my adult Blu-rays from them. I think as long as the quality (content wise) is good then 30 Dollars is a price I am definitely willing to pay. However that might not hold true for most people.

We will see what the situation is in the new year but as of now, we will still be releasing in Blu ray but probably only on higher budget productions.

Mr. Quasar hit all the major points regarding Blu-ray dead on. I recently read some mainstream prognostications that Blu-ray may 'go the way of HD-DVD', since it appears that sales are 'flat'. I guess Sony didn't learn a damn thing from the Beta-VHS smack down. In my latest stroll through Walmart I saw progressive scan DVD players on sale for $29.95. The cheapest Blu-ray player was $229.95 -- and that's cheap for a Blu-ray player. Plus Blu-ray is still too confusing for the average consumer: anyone know the difference between Blu-ray profile 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0? Don't ask the guys at Walmart.
To be brutally honest, most porn is unfit for Blu-ray anyway. I just tried to watch a porn video where the damn camera guy couldn't keep the scenes in focus. Ever try to watch two people screw when the focus goes in and out? Its not pretty. If I had paid $30 for that 'porn masterpiece' I'd be pissed.
Note to smut producers: Learn to light a scene (take a course, read a book, ask some who knows how) and learn to use the damn camera BEFORE you shoot your porn epic.
On Blu-ray porn prices : XRent sales the newest Blu-ray releases in the $30 range. (I have no connection to XRent, I'm just a customer, as witnessed by my damn credit card statements!)
-- just one porn hound's opinion.

People didn't switch to DVD because of the better picture quality. They were drawn to things like director's commentary, behind the scenes features, and deleted scenes.
Blu-ray also needs to offer something truly different. I would look to the programing and networking capabilities. Here are just a few poorly-thought-out options:
1) Where mainstream studios will probably have a picture in picture commentary track, in porn, the picture in the picture could provide sexual stimulation. I would be interested in watching a girl masturbate while she watches the movie. A tease track could keep a raincoater's interest during the non-sex scenes in a feature.
2) You could use the networking capabilities to connect to a webcam service, so you could watch the video with a "virtual girlfriend."
3) You could purchase the sex toys or outfits used in a scene.
4) You could create a sex-toy that includes a blu-ray remote that could be controlled, not by pushing buttons, but by things like stroke rate.
There are a lot of people in the porn industry who have much more creative (and sick and perverted) minds than I do, and they will come up with other, better, ideas. Mainstream studios will also come up with ideas that will be imitated by porn. I doubt that any of the ideas I mentioned will become the "Director's commentary track" of Blu-ray.
Many of the early DVD's were just like VCR tapes. You put them in the player, and the movie started. Menus and BTS features came later. There was a period of experimentation, and finding out how to use the new medium.
Right now, Blu-ray is just a higher quality DVD, but it can be much more than that.
P.S. I have reviewed a few Blu-ray disks including the original Pirates, Jenna Haze Darkside, and Cheerleaders. It also offers new challenges for reviewers. In my case, I need a standard-DVD if I want to include screenshots in the review. For Cheerleaders, I got a Blu-ray screener, and rented standard-DVD.

I did too. I think the main reason for people to buy into DVD technology was the gain in comfort. No rewinding the fucking tape, skipable chapters and so forth. I've never listened to a director's commentary in my life. But it's true though that Blu-ray doesn't have a "real" advantage to DVD apart from better picture and sound. More storage capacity might be a factor. If studios started to give consumers more for their money on one disc then that might convince some people.

Streaming ain't gonna rule for quite a while for a wide variety of reasons. Not everyone is living on the bleeding edge of technology. Not everyone is that comfortable with computers. I think we've still got at least one more generation of physical media to look forward to. Now if the manufacturers fuck around and screw it up, that's another matter but I don't think streaming is going to make the need for a good physical media format obsolete anytime real soon.

^^^ When streaming comes full-force, most users may not realize that they are using a computer. It may look a lot like their Cable boxes.

I doubt people want to give control of what they watch over to the cable companies. Those fuckers would have never let porn get off the ground. It was the VCR that really brought porn to the masses.

I think your pretty much right on, Xbox has net flix and don't forget the good old itunes. I doubt you'll be giving control to the cable company but the internet taking the control away from them. You have a lot of people using the internet for their phone service, with sights like Hulu and the right interface you're already there.

I didn't say it would be a cable box, I said it would "look like" a cable box. Your cable box is a computer, though most people don't think of it that way. So is your cell phone, and so is the aforementioned Xbox. When streaming comes full force, my guess is that people will use their remotes to choose which streams to watch rather than a keyboard.

Mike - can you elaborate on the issues with Sony regarding licensing and whatever other hoops the producer has to go through to use the technology?

Companies that replicate Blu-ray pay a large licensing fee to Sony which in turn gets passed on the production company and ultimately, the consumer. I'm not sure of the dollar amount.

^ Thanks. I'm kind of a numbers guy, so if you do come across some actual dollar amounts, I'd be interested in hearing what those are.
It's interesting though that Sony is taking this position. I would think that they would see it as in their best interest to keep the fees low and encourage the growth of the market. It's conceivable that if growth in the blu-ray market is slow or stagnant, that this would open the door for alternative HD technologies, even perhaps the resurrection of HD-DVD.
Presumably, this scenario also puts more fire under the push to develop streaming into the home technologies, although I still don't know how practical that is with HD given the bandwidth requirements.

Compression keeps getting more and more refined. Apple TV looks pretty damn good considering how small the file sizes are.

Initially it was all about picture quality and ease of use, while I could care less about bonus features. Now I'm a BTS Whore.

How much are you looking to pay for Blu-ray porn? For me, $20 is the max! I'm not getting a Blu-ray player unless the disc prices plummet and i'm sure that i'm buying a format that will last a few years.

So if you're willing to pay 20$ for Blu-rays you want your DVDs for free, right?
