I had an on-line chat session with a Gateway sales rep today to find out whether I could upgrade my CPU. He told me that the CPU I have now (Pentium 4, 1.40 GHz) is the best processor that's supported by the socket on my motherboard.
I was ready to say thanks and end the session when the rep suggested that I get a video card upgrade, as the video card I have now is integrated into my motherboard. When I told the rep that I wasn't looking to sharpen my video display, he advised that an upgrade in the video card would improve the computer's overall performance because the onboard video card I currently have is a drag on my computer's 1GB RAM capacity.
To what extent is this true? If I get a 256MB video card, is that the equivalent of adding an additional 256MB of RAM?
He then suggested three possible alternatives for an upgrade:
(1) ATI Radeon 9250 256MB PCI card ($105); (2) ATI Radeon 9550 256MB AGP ($98 + $53 power upgrade); or (3) PNY NVIDIA Quadro Workstation 280NVS LP 8X AGP. ($176 + $53 power upgrade).
How do these options differ in terms of likely improvements in operating performance? (As I mentioned, I don't really care about improved display).
Alternative (3) sounds too expensive to be worth it, but I don't know in a vacuum whether that's true. Are all of these up-grades too expensive to be worth it?

You will get back the RAM that is ate up by the on-board video back, that's for sure. However adding a 256MB card is ONLY for the card - not system wide.
I will help but not a whole lot, at least I don't think.
I wouldn't do it, way too expensive and I'm not sure you a NEED 256MB vid card. I would go to [invalid URL removed]this card. Hell you could probably even go down to a 64MB card and be fine.
You MIGHT need a new power supply, but I dunno, I'd have to know all the components, as well as the PS's current wattage.

Don't get me wrong, a video card is used alot if even you edit video or watch movies. You might tell a difference with a video card. If you have a gig of RAM, then you have some to spare as long as you don't have 4 or 5 processor intensive programs running.
It will only give back the memory that would be stolen by graphics anyway. If the display is not that important, then I think its waaaaay to much to pay for a low end card. That NVidia they suggested is over $200, which is outrageous. Tell Gateway to get their damn hands out of your pockets.

The first one listed is only $68. Newegg is a good place to buy computer parts.
A good video card does much more than free up system RAM. It's a separate dedicated video processor. Instead of your CPU wasting time rendering graphics it sends a few instructions to the CPU on the grpahics card and the card takes care of it allowing the main CPU to do other useful work.
If you don't so a lot of graphics-intensive stuff like 3D image rendering in games or video playback then the real world performance increase would me minimal.
The nice thing about a grpahics card upgrade is that it can be removed and installed in a different system of you decide to upgrade your computer at some point.
I forgot to address the power upgrade issue. It's not an AGP vs. PCI thing. Some graphics cards consume shitloads of power and aren't powered from the bus slot that they plug into. They also typically have one (or more) dedicated cooling fans. All of this current might require a power supply upgrade. Many motherboards that max out at 1.4 ghz most likely were installed in computers with 250 watt power supplies.

Bob, I'm basically in agreement with Redish on this. I would get an inexpensive ($40-60ish) AGP video card from Newegg; you could go with either an Nvidia chipset one or an ATi chipset one (the brand of the card itself isn't really important). There would not be any good reason to use a PCI one if your motherboard has an AGP slot. I believe your machine is too old to have a PCI Express slot (which has supplanted AGP nowadays), so you don't want one of those kinds of cards, either.
There probably isn't any need to get one with more than 128MB of RAM. The hardcore gamer types can debate the various merits of all the available chipsets and other choices until the cows come home, but for your purposes, it's not going to matter all that much exactly which card you buy. The one thing I would suggest you pay attention to, however, is getting one that has a plain heatsink on the graphics chip, as opposed to a fan-cooled heatsink. (While you would want the additional cooling a fan would provide if you were doing graphics-intensive things, they're *noisy* little buggers.) You can tell just by looking at the pictures - e.g., [invalid URL removed]plain vs. [invalid URL removed]fan
If you have any interest in possibly using the computer with a digital flat-panel monitor, using multiple monitors, or in hooking it up to your TV, you might want to pay attention to which kinds of outputs the card you pick provides.
There is no reason to buy from Gateway. These things are basically commodity items.
As to the power supply, I would be very surprised if just adding a non-bleeding edge video card would overtax your existing one. I wouldn't buy a new one unless the machine starts acting flakey after you add the video card.
Graphics technology keeps changing and slot/bus designs change with it. An AGP card isn't going to work on a motherboard that has a PCI Express slot instead, so it's still Buyer Beware.
to summarize some of the points. -Integrated Bad, Dedicated Good: Integrated video uses system ram for video processing. this steals ram AND it steals memory bandwith AND it steals processing power. Turning off integrated video frees up your computer. (So does disabling a software modem that borrows processing power) -Some video cards require a dedicated power supply similar to a hard drive, floppy drive or a CD/DVD ROM. It's requires one of the power connections coming out of the power supply. Make sure to check that your system meets the video card's requirements. -PCI-E is better than AGP which is a better than PCI. Finding a PCI card is getting harder and they are surprisingly expensive. -memory (64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB) and memory type (DDR, DDR2, DDR3) on a video card determines the speed and resolution. The resolution of your monitor will probably be a bigger determinant than the video car.

You disable the integrated video in BIOS (the stuff you [probably] see when you first turn the computer on, before Windows start to load). Usually you have to quickly press the DEL key to get into the BIOS options screens.
Some manufacturers sort of hide the BIOS stuff with a graphic screen or something, so you may not see it. I think the usual thing is to press the F12 key if this is the case, but someone will correct me if I'm wrong. If you still have a manual for the machine, or can find it online, then it should tell you how to get into the BIOS.
Tips on buying an AGP Card -find out what type of AGP port you have. Does it support 2X, 4X or 8X? AGP or AGP Pro? -does it require external power -does have a noisy fan, quiet fan or is it fanless -is it so wide that it blocks a PCI slot or deep that it can't fit your motherboard (if the memory or processor are in a weird spot on your board)

Integrated video can be a pain in the ass to over-ride depending on the motherboard. Do you know the make and model of motherboard you have so we can help you spot any pitfalls? Some motherboards require the video card to be installed in a specific slot (pci). If you're going with AGP it may make it easier.
To uninstall and disable your modem : 1) look for fax/modem/voice software in add/remove programs and uninstall it.
If your modem is integrated : 2) To disable the integrated modem you need to go into the BIOS like Harri said. During bootup there will be a message to press XX for setup. It could be F1, F2, F12, DEL, etc.
3) Once in the BIOS you should see a peripherals tab. Each BIOS is different so you'll have to see what's going on. Find the tab with Integrated NIC, Modem etc and disable it.
If your modem is not integrated : 2) turn off the computer, unplug all power, open the case, take out the modem.
Sounds like you have the original P4 "Willamette" processor.
You can get around the motherboard/processer compatibility issues if you get a drop in Socket 423 to Socket 478 Upgrade Adapter from powerleap.
It's about $260. You will see a difference.

That being said, here's a thought for you.
With new computer prices dropping through the floor you can pick up a decent new computer for under $500 it boils down to budget and/or convenience.
Don't want to back up all your files and reinstall everything? The above upgrade just "drops in" - take it to your local computer shop if you have never noodled around under the hood, but it's an easy job for a do it yourself-er. Swap out your hard drive later on and you can make it a couple more years, easy. (Get a western digital raptor that spins at 10,000 rpm)
But for about $150 more you can buy a brand new Dell Dimension E520. It's [about] the same processor. Add another stick of ram and you are good to go.
Just for giggles, I customized one with a 2.8 Ghz Core Duo (not a Celeron - has 2 cores) GIG of Ram and a 256mb Nvidia GForce 7300LE, 160GB Drive and I was at $664 out - the - door.
This is a respectable system that would BURY the system you have even after you upgraded it with the adapter.
That said, I would wait...about another 6 months until Windows Vista actually ships in the spring. Upgrading your operating system sucks big time.
I have no numbers to back it up, just my perception, but I've upgraded video cards on a couple of my computers when they were old and slow, and there was a noticable difference.
I had much more noticable differences in speed by upgrading video cards than I ever did upgraded system RAM.
Whether it works for you, or how well, depends on what the bottleneck in your system is. But if you can get a good video card for a reasonable price, I'd definitely try it.
I ended up buying [invalid URL removed]this video card for $60 at Fry's Electronics in Burbank, CA (their prices are similar to Newegg's). It was easy to install it and load the drivers, and it's working well. The card has a small fan, but I haven't taxed its circuitry enough for the fan to engage.
I can see a definite improvement in my computer's performance.

I appreciate your advice about the Socket 478 Upgrade Adapter from Powerleap. I'm going to look into it and figure out whether it makes sense to use it to upgrade my CPU.
