I was sending a PM the other day and saw this:
"Notes about private messages:
Currently, the private message system only accepts text input. No forum code, no HTML, no markup, no attachments. It's completely barebones. We will add many new features in the future."
This has been the case for a long time around here. Are there any plans to upgrade the PM system so that HTML and attachments can be used in PM's?
What do the other posters on here think? Would you like to see the PM system upgraded?

Adding HTML and attachments would add a huge security risk, if I were Drew I would not go that route.

I've been here over a decade, and this is the first time I've realized that there's none of that in PMs.
But then, I don't know why or when I'd ever use them in PMs.

^ There have been quite a few times communicating via PM when I would have found it helpful. For example, I like to italicize the titles of porn movies. So when someone asks me for a recommendation via PM, I always feel a little weird putting the title in quotes. Italics are also good for emphasis.

It would be fairly easy to allow the same type of forum code markup in PMs that we allow in posts.

There's one primary reason why I haven't added forum-code support to PMs: I really don't want people using it as a means of sharing images privately. So I'm reluctant. Yes it would be cool to have something like Facebook's messenger system where members can add attachments, pretty formatting, group conversations, etc. But I think providing a robust PM system would ultimately result in less conversation happening publicly on the site. If I can be convinced that there's real value in working on private features I'd be happy to do it.

This is probably a dumb question, but how exactly does one originate a PM? When I go to my Messages, I can see messages people have sent me, and I can reply to those, but I don't see any option to create a new message and send it to someone without receiving a message from them first.

The sheet of paper with an envelope icon at the top left of each person's post will initiate a PM to that member.

^Thanks. I knew it had to be something terribly obvious like that.
