[div]Legitimate hot linked like from imgur like? I don't mean porn necessarily. Just amusing cat clips and the like. There are a lot of interesting ways to respond to posts with animated gifs.[/div] Edited by - nietzsche on Mar 12 2014
I dunno. Maybe. I just hate animated gifs. I've been to too many forums filled with posts with animated shit. It's sometimes enough to induce epileptic seizures.
I rather like them, except that with the already used-and-abused quoting system that places the same photo six times on the same page, a bunch of the same animated gifs going off all the same time is going to give me a headache.
We had them for awhile. I had a couple of animated avatars here back in the day. They were cute, but I can't say I miss them much or care to see them return (the nightmare that is Tumblr soured me on the idea).

On reddit they have a thing where you click on the plus sign to expand the gif and a minus to collapse it. I think that works pretty well.
It doesn't matter since we moderate the forum. If it was completely unmoderated here we wouldn't be liable. There's no easy/convenient way to moderate hotlinked images. We require images to be stored on our server so that we can remove them if necessary. It's not just 2257, we also get a not-insignificant number of DMCA takedown notices we have to comply with. With the images on our server I can copy/paste the offending image URL into an admin page and "poof" it's gone. Content providers appreciate immediate responses to takedown notices. If we allowed animated gifs they would have to be on our server. I haven't looked at the tech specs in a while but there should be a way for me to reprocess them into a static image as a placeholder with a clickable JQuery action to make them play.
