I've played around with the database in Microsoft Works. Seems to work fine. I'm not in love with it - the only reason I'm experimenting with it is because it is handy.

Again, I'm looking forward to seeing what others say here, and maybe finding something better.
Anybody have any comments on Works and/or db software like it?

Also, I see you were asked, "how do you go about making your own...?". When you reply to that, would you mind telling us some of the fields you use? I suppose something like 'Movie Name' is one. :) But what other info do you find useful?

I haven't used works, but there is probably a lot of similarity in the two, Access being perhaps a bit more robust.

I had already done a few things in Access, so it was no problem creating one for me. I haven't used other db software, so I can't compare.

Mine doesn't have all the bells and whistles that other programs may have, especially if a Drew Black worked on it, but it satisfied my needs.

That looks familiar. I may have used it, or something with similar features, once upon a time. But at the time I was needing to keep track of a bunch of zip files. In other words, it was not the just the whole disk itself I needed to keep track of, but the files on each disk too.
For that sort of job, it worked great. For cataloging movies - dvds - though, I'm not sure I'd like it as well as a plain old database.

Let me know if I misunderstood the description of DiskBase at that site.

It does a great job of reading the directories and allowing fields to add sizeable descriptions of the disk. For my DVD's with the title as the disk label it reads the disk label as the default. If no label you can type the name of the movie as the disk label.

For my collection I log the title of the movie, stars and significant action in the directory where I have the movie file(s). Anything extra I want to use I put in the customizable fields. The search features work great and it exports comma delimited reports to excel, access, etc.

D/L the trial version and give it a quick shot. Cheap, works great and nothing to lose!

DVDProfiler is not free, and some things are automated for you.
Same for DiskBase.
You can try DiskBase for a while for free.
I think you can with DVDProfiler too... I'd have to go back and check to be sure.

Paradox is commercial software from Corel. Apparently it is a database program.
Same for Access.
Same for what I've experimented with - MS Works.
Works is just old though. :)

I'll say this - If I can do it, it must not be too difficult.

Your first job is picking out which software you want to use. I think you and I are getting good info here and as this thread continues, will continue to get good input.

For now, I'm leaning towards staying with my plain old Works
database software for a couple of reasons.

I already have it - no expenditure.

A few others here have already said that they are using database software, making their own databases. Hmm... with their experience, it must not be an all bad idea. :)

I may experiment with DiskBase and DVDProfiler though, just to see if I'm missing out on some feature that I'd really like, that makes it worth it to me. I'm going to keep watch on this thread to see what else I may learn.

I have three different tables linked together on a single form. The tables and their fields are:
Stars:
- Name
- DOB
- URL (to her website, if any)

Movies:
- Star Name
- Movie
- Studio
- Release date (which I rarely bother to fill in)

Pictures:
- Star Name
- Picture #
- Picture

Using the form, I can view a star and see the complete list of her movies, plus browse a selection of her pics. That's assuming I loaded any pics in the db, of course.

Regarding the layout, I opted for a single record from the "Stars" table, with a multi-record list from the "Movies" table below that, and a single record from the "Pictures" table beside the two. This format allows me to peruse the list of an actress' movies while dedicating a large amount of real estate to her pictures.

Since that format means I can only move through the "Stars" table sequentially, I also put in a Search button so I can jump to the record of any star just by typing in her name.

I'd post a screenshot for you but I don't have any webspace and I'm too lazy to sign up for ImageShack, et al, just for the occasional pic.

Starlets and some of their Bio data. I use this to link together with data from the main table, using the SPC code to create the link in a report function.

In my report it will list the movie, a rating, and the stars in the movie. From this I have also made it so I can click on a stars name and then pull up a secondary report of all the movies for THAT starlet that I own. I don't list all the movies she has made but am interested only in what I own in case I want to pull another movie out to watch one of her scenes.

Like I indicated, nothing too fancy but it serves my needs.

I created a number of buttons that link into site search engines to look up titles on the web. The primary trick is to replace characters that cannot be allowed in the site link. For example:

This takes the title in my database and replaces spaces with + and # with %23 and generates a search in a browser for the title on the ADE web site. The replacement is needed to allow for the search to work properly. In VB my ReplaceString function is called Replace(). This is fairly technical but the same thing can be done in Access or other tools. I will try to build the correct code if someone needs it.

Since this is a standard link to ADE I do not think that I am doing anything inappropriate to link to them. The same approach can be used to access ADE sample screens, Fivestar, and other sites that are linked by the ADE web site. I would like to automatically pull down the cover art into my database. You have to be careful because if you pull down the graphic directly (bypassing the web page) it may be considered a violation by the site owner.
I would also need permission to use the graphics which are watermarked.

I can also use this feature to look up a title I want to buy from my application. Hopefully I will add the DVDTalk links shortly to my list.

I can post some sample screen shots if someone can tell me how.

The process of converting text strings to URL format is known as 'URL encoding'. You should be able to find a function/script on the internet to easily accomodate this for you.

To an extent what you have written for it works. All the entries in the database are done by the users, so if someone has entered the disc (or disc ID for ROM entry) the info pops right up. If no one has yet, then you have to enter the title and get no info for it.

I've found that most older adult films from the major studios are entered, new ones take a while to get entered though.

It's not bad, it takes up a chunk of storage space though.
