Why would my CD-Rom stop reading Data discs that it used to read? It will still play audio discs but it wont recognize data. This was never a problem before....

I installed a new CD- Rom unit (Hardware) and still have the same problem


this is a pc using XP w/ a Memorex 52x reader

Any Clues?

I would guess that the problem is your music player. If it has first crack at reading the CD and determines that it isn't music then it is supposed to 'hand off' to the OS so it can read the disc. It sounds like it isn't handing off, for some reason. Try uninstalling it.

I don't know if it's related, but I had a problem very similar to yours a few years ago with a TDK CD-ROM drive.

A simple fix ended up solving the problem, I disabled "autoplay".

You can do this via registry editing or by going to My computer>right-click(whatever your drive is named)>Properties>Autoplay.

Thanks for your response, I haven't been able to totally disable the Auto-play, simply change the settings. working on it though. I am kind of glad to know someone else had the same problem and was able to resolve it. I am afraid a disc had some kind of bug that was able to make changes to my drive.

I'm suggesting you uninstall the music player. However, since disabling Autoplay should be easier start with that.

Have you checked the drivers? That would be -
right-click the drive in My Computer,
select Properties,
select the Hardware tab,
select the drive then click on the Properties button,
the Driver tab and, finally
the Driver Details button.

My CD-ROM has three drivers listed:
cdrom.sys
redbook.sys
storprop.dll

If you're missing any of those you should try uninstalling and reinstalling the drive.

PS - All three drivers should be in your System32 folder.

Hardware,

I tried to unistall the drivers before, they automatically reloaded when i restarted and was the same after that.

There are 4 drivers listed, the three you listed as well as imapi.sys But it all loads together as a pack.

Anyway thanks for your help on all this. I am truly puzzled.
