| eduardo911 Senior Member 1299 Posts 8/03 | It is striking that a huge percentage of all porn distributed worldwide seems to have been produced in a very small number of geographical centers in even fewer countries: the US/Canada, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, France, and Japan. A small number indeed given that people have sex everywhere and there are 200+ countries in the world. There are a few other centres but they don't seem to account for nearly as much volume. My questions: - How and why did this come to be so? Historical coincidence + advantage of a head start? Strategic location? Legal issues (obviously this is part of of the reason in some cases)? Other reasons? Put differently: why Brazil but none of the Spanish-speaking Latin American countries (except as a 'location' for shooting)? Why Prague and Budapest but not, say, Warsaw, Sofia, or Kiev? Why Germany but not Austria or Switzerland? - Which centers have I overlooked? (See below)
2. Canada : Montreal 3. Brazil (Rio? Sao Paolo? I often recognize talent appearing in US productions, e.g. TT Boy, from Brazilian movies (Brazileirinhas label) so production is likely concentrated in one or two locations as well. 4. Japan : Tokyo? 5. Czech Republic : Prague 6. Hungary : Budapest 7. Russia : Moscow, St. Petersburg 8. Germany : Munich (anywhere else?). Used to be the leader in Europe before the rise of Budapest and Prague. 9. France : Decent volume of reasonably professional porn, but not very internationally oriented. 10. Italy : I don't get the production is very large though, and apart from Rocco (who seems to have shot a lot in other countries anyway), it's not very high profile internationally. 11. Spain : (Where?) I read somewhere that Private moved its production there from Scandinavia in the 1980s. Don't know if they still produce there as Private was at the forefront of shooting in Eastern Europe and using Eastern European talent in the 1990s. There is some purely local Spanish porn but it is very amateurish. 12. Scandinavia (I think mostly Copenhagen, Denmark): was one of the earliest centers but I don't think much happens there anymore. 13. The Netherlands : is important in Europe for distribution but AFAIK not for production. Some of the content for Seventeen used to be produced locally but they shifted towards content from Russia and later, Budapest and Prague as well. The only Dutch production network of any size that I'm aware of currently seems to produce mostly internet content, and the output doesn't compare to the main centers. I'm not aware of any city specifically being a production center (but then, the country is so small that travel is hardly an issue). 14. Belgium : seems to function as a kind of auxiliary to the Dutch network, with talent crossing the border occasionally but not much else. I hope the esteemed members of this board can shed some light on all this. Edited by - eduardo911 on Mar 21 2006 [Link] |

| Steve Holmes Senior Member 1235 Posts 12/02 | Porn movies are shot everywhere. I even worked in Israel, Turkey, Serbia and Chile and many other places, but you can't call them a center. Except Florida for Internet contend. The three cities I've mentioned have the big advantage that they have a perfect infrastructure of agencies, locations, technicians and equipment to rent. So everybody goes there. Talent as well as producers. Many male and female talent who work in this three cities come from abroad. Steve Holmes |

brazil's got the simple fact you're not dealing with FARC showing up and getting killed, kidnapped and shaken down constantly like any of the narco-democracies. so scratch central america because of the commies, killers, dealers, kidnappers and priests as places to do business-brazil may be a mess but it's politically-stable compared to neighboring countries.
russia and the CIS are scarier places to be in comparison to cz and hu, the people shooting there either have juice whether it's a native company or not or it's risky. eastern europe has lots of poor yet attractive white people and aren't the ukraine and cis countries in terms of being totally run by gangsters. the american and western-europeans generally get most of the take from farming those nations, despite the natives making something off of it. asians seem to hate each other about as much as any two disparate races could within their own kind, so i'm not going to pretend to be an expert on who they're actually shooting porn with, just that japan can afford to buy it legally. japanese= close to the only ones in asia with governments that tolerate pornography while having enough money, stability and organization to get a company together. japan's a huge consumer-base, i'd have to ask dac how hard it is to find japanese-talent, at least in the US it seems to be mostly koreans and chinese, but that might be financial. | eduardo911 Senior Member 1299 Posts 8/03 | @Steve Holmes: Thanks for the feedback Steve, BTW love your work. I wasn't aware of the extent of the difference between LA-Budapest-Prague vs. the rest. @jamesnadt: That's an interesting politico-economic analysis. Makes you think about how anomalous the existence of a porn 'industry' actually is. Edited by - eduardo911 on 3/21/2006 7:45:36 PM |
| croy Platinum Member Discovry 4574 Posts 3/04 | The porn industry is only an anomoly as far as being a legal buisness. It has always been underground the moment the technology became affordable. Thankfully, we are past amateur grainy 8mm. The rich muslim countries have different rules for what goes on behind the mansion walls. But those people buy while they are in European countries where they do their drinking and pussy chasing. In the US, court battles have made LA one of the most viable spots. At one time there was good Pro-Am talent in Florida, but what do you have for equiptment rental and editing facilities that are affordable? Of the Asian countries, Japan is the obvious market. Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan are the only other economically well off countries. Most of the world is not only dangerous, but corrupt. Since most locals will be shocked, this presents greater leverage in shaking a group down. There is a thread in the Porn News about a group that was arrested in Mexico. Mexico is actually less corrupt than the other Central American countries. |

| Joey Starr Senior Member Still wanking after all these years. 8082 Posts 10/00 | I don't agree with it at all, there are many totally professional, world class productions coming from France, Marc Dorcel, Blue One. Even JTC and Colmax sometimes produce world class stuff. I don't agree with your comments on Italy and Spain either. IMVHO you should do a little bit of homework before castigating other countries productions with such limited knowledge of the subject. |
| croy Platinum Member Discovry 4574 Posts 3/04 | Some of the stuff that made it here from Spain isn't bad. But how do they compare in volume? Florida makes sense for internet stuff. A lot of young people who move there whose sole ambition is time on the beach. Many hot ones working crap jobs to fulfill that dream. |

| LeeScott Member Glasgow, Scotland 77 Posts 5/06 | Now there are many companies producing porn such as Rude Britannia, Harmony, Relish, Pornostatic, Ben Dover, Killegream, Your Choice and several others. You have to remember that it has only been legal to purchase R18 movies in the UK since 2001, so there is still plenty of potential for growth. |

Sadly, recent events may mean that 2007 will be a massive retrograde step; not only are there proposals to criminalise the possession of so-called 'extreme porn', but, even worse, a Scottish Parliament committee’s recent announcement of a 'porn summit', which looks set to try and outlaw ALL adult porn in Scotland! Dark days, indeed. |

Someone once verbally contended that New York adopted the Freeman v. California decision, too --can a state actually do that, AND make it legal, or just BS? Dave |
| pornlaw Member 578 Posts 10/05 |
As for NY adopting Freeman, not that I am aware of. The case I think people are referring to involved a criminal prosecution of a madame. In her defense, she invoked the argument that porn is protected speech and her job as a madame really isnt that much different and therefore she should not be convicted. I dont believe that case ever went beyond the trial court and is not controlling. Also since the case didnt involve the prosecution of a production company any reference to porn production is basically considered dicta. Meaning pointless comments made by a judge that lawyers like to cite in cases but really mean nothing to the next Judge. The next case that is going to address this issue will be the CumOnHerFace.com prosecution in Florida. That case might have serious implications for production there. Michael |

Of course I understand that, my mistake, what I really meant was that porn was available to purchase from licensed sex shops since this time. I tried looking on the Scottish Parliament web-site for more information of this summit but could not find any further information. If such a summit is to be held, then the relevant stages of consultation and papers would have to go through parliament. There is no chance that this will happen prior to the elections in May 2007, and you may find that proposals to look at porn may either be forgotten or greatly delayed by this. As part of my work in local government I have been working in an area that has been reviewed by the Scottish Parliament and it has taken 18 months for recommendation to be published. Also worth noting is that "sex shops" in glasgow do not have a license to sell R18 films yet it is seen as acceptable to allow their continued operation. I know that one temporarily closed but I believe this was not as a result of the content being sold. Should ther be a full consultation regarding porn in Scotland I will do my utmost to seek support to allow consential adult films to be legally sold, bought and owned legal... I cannot do it myself, and will need a lot of help but it is time people stood up to the beaurocrats and asked them to listn to the majority and not just the voiciferous few from religious establishments and feminist groups as well as the few "do gooders" that know it all. You just have to look at what has happened in Ipswish to see that our primitive approash to prostitution is not working... and do they really think by making kerb crawling and picking up a prostitute an offence is going to stop street workers or stop violence towards them?? All that this causes is for the crinemal gangs to smuggle innocent girls from Eastern Europe in to a live of sex slavery and pain in order to satisfy demand, while the street workers, still the sam in number will become more desperate and more at risk. Sorry to everyone for going off topic here, just had to get my feelings on the issue off my chest!! PS, Stuan, if you wish you can send me an e-mail with any info you have or reply to this post.
