A nice idea, but this involves not only higher bit rates in the DVD authoring process... it also supposes that the masters are high enough quality (and generated in such a way) to justify a higher bit rate. Granted, there are a couple studios whose video quality might benefit from such a move, but I think most studios are still just starting to understand the subtleties of DVD production, and that it starts not at the authorer, but as soon as the director turns on a camera.

Since I admittedly don't know jack shit though, I'd be interested to hear from the more knowledgable folks on this topic...

I think that's a very good suggestion that will perhaps become practical when VHS finally passes away. Companies could focus on one DVD with all the extras and an optional "superbit" version once the cost of VHS duplication is no longer a factor in their bottom line.
