This has been on my mind lately and I have nowhere else to discuss such a topic, so I would like to see your thoughts

like many of you, I follow some porn performers on social media, and appreciate what they post. Often it enhances my enjoyment of their scenes.

I like seeing the candid pics and behind the scenes and added content.

For example there is a performer I became aware of only recently. there are videos of her in gloryhole action and taking multiple creampies and her first DP. I looked her up on twitter and watched a video clip of her just lifting weights at the gym. it was a nice contrast.

By the way, I want to point out I am old enough to remember life pre-social media and even pre-internet. so it is still quite remarkable to me that we have such access to pornstars.

There was a time not too long ago when there was a certain air of mystery to the performers in porn. like who they were as people, what was going on in their lives and so on. that was rare stuff to come by, prior to twitter, instagram, tiktok, onlyfans, etc. etc.

------

Anyway before I ramble too much, let me get to the point: There is a retired porn performer I used to follow.... out of respect for the tone of this forum I will not name her but only say her fame was in the 1990s.

I say "used to" follow because her twitter is now 90% politics

not only is it politics, it is the worst kind of politics. Full of trolling and mocking memes, very often mean spirited and bitter.

maybe I am getting old, but such stuff is against my values. There is a snarkiness and nihilism to it that is tiresome to me.

Everyone has a right to their opinion, I do not expect everyone to have the same as mine. But such twitter stuff is not respectful discourse, it is negative bullshit for the chronically online. it comes from a very different place than where I am at mentally. I will gladly unfollow and avoid it.

However, now I must admit, knowing this about her affects my viewing of her porn.

This is a performer whose scenes I have been watching for over 25 years! but now when I see her stuff I cannot help but think about what she is like now. yeah I even think about how difficult it would be to have a conversation with her.

it makes me wonder.... What if she was never on twitter. What if I never looked her up. What if I did not know her strong opinions and online behavior.

-----

I notice that public figures like performers (porn or otherwise) can have very different approaches to social media.

Some treat it professionally, they only tweet "in character." They are using their platform primarily to promote their content and brand

for some others it is more personal, they use their platform to vent and rant and vociferate (what a word). They are "firing from the hip"

to be frank: I am less and less interested in the latter. in fact I can't relate to it. Why has this thing arisen where people feel a need to blast their opinions and complaints on every goddamn thing

maybe I really am getting old.

I think we most likely unfollowed the same pornstar, lol.
I feel the same way about a pornstar when I find out their politics and worldviews don't in line with mine
It's a huge turn-off for me and I gradually stopped watching them altogether. It sucks
I feel pornstars (leftists or right-wingers) should avoid talking about politics and hot-button social issues altogether on their social media pages.
Unless it's pertaining porn
So, Talking about the abortion issue and how it will affect SWs is ok
But talking about how you hate Joe Biden and Dr. Fauci isn't
Talking about the differences between a swab test and a urine test is good
But telling everybody online your crazy Covid 19 conspiracy theory isn't

Lol Yes that is very possible

For the sake of the forum let us not name her or get more specific....

What is puzzling to me is how her social media presence has degenerated. A year ago she was much more pleasant in what she would post and share. More conscious of avoiding negativity

But now she is just firing off, gladly alienating others. Guess she could not contain herself any longer.

She has even insulted and dismissed her porn fans..... despite her using her porn stage name and doing onlyfans. Which was the reason she started her twitter

Very messy. it is saddening to me that after all these years she is still twisted up about porn. It seem she has not truly come to terms with it, or herself.

Honestly.... I wish I did not know.

If I did not know, she could have stayed a mystery. Just an alluring figure from the past.

Knowing a lot about pornstars isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it can be, so generally I prefer to not know too much, if anything, about pornstars and other artists whose work I enjoy. If an artist is a veteran in their field or is dead, then I might seek out information about them, but otherwise I tend to make a conscious effort to keep ignorant because I don't want to be distracted from the work.

The old saying ignorance is bliss is my motto when it comes to how I prefer to deal with just about all performers/celebrities be they the adult oriented kind or mainstream ones. At no point as the knowledge of a entertainers private life enhanced my enjoyment of their work. In fact I would argue that it usually negatively affects how I view them and by extension their work.

With as polarizing as politics and some other matters have become, a lot of people's views have changed about just about anyone - mainstream actors, athletes, casual acquaintances, neighbors, and even friends. There is definitely information about people that I wish I didn't know.

The differences were always there it's just that in the era of social media and instant information, they're more known. Extreme viewpoints also seem a lot more common now. Moderate viewpoints are not nearly as common as they used to be. Tolerances for opposing viewpoints is also a lot less than it once was. Again, this all seems to have become more common in the age of social media. On one hand it's really bad but on the other, with people wearing themselves on their sleeves, I won't invest as much time in them.

I'm not a big social media person. I don't have facebook, twitter, or instagram accounts. I do lurk from time to time and do keep up on the news and will see reports of what others post on SM accounts. Sometimes I like it that way. I have friends and neighbors that have views that are a lot different than mine. They know it and I know it. We also know that it is best to not discuss certain issues, so we don't. I'm quite moderate in my opinions and beliefs and always have been. I try to appreciate opposing opinions but sometimes I just can't. I would like us to get back to there being more tolerance for others but, unfortunately, that ship has sailed.

Lastly, it also now seems a lot more common for people to think that my views are going to align with theirs. It just now seems more common for others to freely share with me their thoughts and opinions on just about anything. Some of those are very bigoted and hateful. Random salespeople have lost my business due to this. It's just not OK. People now seem to have a lot less tact and fewer have filters.

tl;dr - I definitely wish I didn't know some things about just about everyone and people need to become more tolerant of others. Social media has made differences more well-known and less accepted.

I see. I understand your position. Yes, there is an intellectual discussion on art that proposes the metaphorical "death of the artist"..... knowledge of artists and their intentions is not important to appreciation of their work.

Kind of funny to apply such academic theorizing to pornstars and their porn!

but I guess it is no different than separating actors from their roles in movies, or musicians from their songs.

I don't think about Tom Cruise being a Scientologist when I watch his action scenes, I don't think about Jimmy Page having very underage groupies when I rock out to Led Zeppelin.

So why is it so difficult for me to separate the woman fucking and sucking on screen from the woman being toxic on twitter?

It's an excellent point and the "separating the art from the artist" debate has heightened over recent years, let's be honest for someone of my age who grew up in the 70's/80's i probably wouldn't listen to a music track again if I was to studiously avoid artists who turned out to be wrong 'uns :)

With regard to pornstars and twitter, I've remarked on this subject elsewhere in star crossed about certain performers including one who has absolutely disappeared down the rabbit hole in the last two years (she recently retired from the mainstream)....like others have said it isn't about the party politics per se it's just the endless stream of crap some of them tweet and R/T pretending they're subject matter experts and spouting pseudo intellectual nonsense thinking they are "in the know".........will avoid naming names on that front but notable exceptions in the just tweeting upbeat, nice and compassionate envelope or sticking to "on topic" are the likes of Julia Ann

Hmmm I definitely wish I kept my ignorance about the retired performer in this case, but there have been other cases of the opposite for me.

Gina Gerson for example has her own Youtube channel where she has shared a lot about her life and her thoughts on her porn.

it makes her scenes hotter to me. I can watch her in a 10-man anal gangbang, or I can watch her going on trips, playing with dogs and exercising.

Could be argued Gina is still "in character" on Youtube and she deliberately avoids negativity and controversy. I think she has even written a book on positivity.

But still I appreciate Gina being so accessible. it humanizes her, now I cannot see her as just "fuck meat" in her scenes.

I can also understand where you are coming from though.

It's a bad thing for me personally. I watch porn for the fantasy aspect. I don't need to know and don't want to know about a porn girl's baby daddy issues, their politics, who they have beef with within the industry, etc.

I like being blissfully ignorant on these topics so I can just enjoy how a girl sucks and fucks.

I am very much not the type of person to separate the way a person behaves from their art. If they are a shit person, I stop supporting, full stop, especially when it comes to monetary support.

I would argue social media has not just revealed such differences, but it has greatly influenced and amplified them.

in the case of the retired performer who inspired this thread, it is very obvious she consumes a lot of inflammatory political content via memes and "rage bait" on social media. she is deep in the echo chamber. She herself admits she has been radicalized in recent years

Well there is the paradox. Some say it is a false paradox....do we have to be tolerant of intolerance?

if a former pornstar calls her porn fans "cucks" and "degenerates," why shouldn't we unfollow. Why would I want to give her any further dollar or moment of my attention.

And how can it not affect how I view her porn?

Lol yes I hesitate to even say some of the song titles of 1970s/1980s rock - yet can still appreciate the riffs. My hypocrisy knows no bounds haha
Yes I know what you mean. I accept differences in politics and hard subjects. but I do not understand why certain political perspectives require a stream of toxic crap on social media. it is indeed a "rabbit hole." Nowadays some people fire off more opinions and wade into more controversies in a few hours than people used to do in their whole lives.

Whatever happened to keeping things to yourself and having some class. Weird Al Yankovic is a religious, church-going man. but you will never catch him spouting off on that. he respects his fans and people in general too much to do that.

Here is what I have found by watching podcasts on YouTube. There are some stars I've watched who have become even more attractive to me as it turns out they are people with which I would love to hang out or have conversations. On the other hand, there have been a number of women who I can barely listen to because they appear vapid and offer nothing in the way of deep thought. They come off as women with no depth at all and instantly turn me off. I then can no longer enjoy their scenes. Actually, that is not 100% true. I watched/listened to Kimmy Granger's appearance on Holly Randall's podcast and was completely turned off. There appeared to be little there for me and I figured I wouldn't be able to watch her scenes. Turns out I still can, especially if they are pre-boob job and she is acting (not gonzo). Go figure.

I get it. like a personal boycott.

but really, "boycott" is a loaded term. That is just exercising your right as the consumer/audience.

Being the consumer/audience is not an obligation. if you are at odds with the performer, why wouldn't you stop supporting them as a consequence?

that is the marketplace in action

But I guess I am coming at it more from a sentimental side than economics. The videos in this case were bought many years ago, the memories are from past decades.

Just too bad that is all tainted now.

Maybe I am too sentimental to be watching porn! Lol

I will say that in response to "death of the artist" and "kill the artist" approaches to art, and also separating the art from the artist, to me when the artist shares their work with someone it becomes shared property automatically because an individual other than the artist has their own, separate experience of the work that is distinctly their own. I find this especially obvious with music. Someone writes and sings a song about their boyfriend, but I listen to it and apply it to my own relationship. I take possession of the song for myself within my perception of it, but this in no way affects what that song is for the artist. In a very real way the song belongs to both of us imo. Now, that doesn't mean I'm uninterested in hearing what artists have to say about their art. Far from it. I've bought numerous films primarily for the commentary tracks. It's often very interesting to me to find out where this or that work came from. But if I love a movie, and the director of that movie hates it, I'm not going to feel that my experience of that film is delegitimized by their's because they created it.

I think that many of us feel a distance from celebrity opinions and behavior that we may feel is broached by social media. So if Tom Cruise were on social media constantly preaching the gospel of L. Ron Hubbard, or if Jimmy Page were on social media all of the time talking about how wonderful fucking teen minors is, you might find it as hard to enjoy their work as you do with the work of some pornstars.

Lol Oh yes podcasts have the worst risk of letting you know too much about a pornstar. Hard for a person to hide who they really are when they are talking unscripted for hours.

had a similar experience when I watched/listened to Teanna Trump on the No Jumper podcast. Realized she is a wild woman. constant drama, a proud "ho" - she does not just play one on camera haha. She lives in a different world than me. But somehow it makes her scenes hotter! what a body and what moves she has. Go figure indeed

actually I have had good luck with pornstar podcasts. some have really given me greater appreciation for the performer.

I watched/listened to an Amber Rayne podcast from before she died. She was so sweet and nerdy. total opposite of her maniac persona on camera. Gives her scenes a different perspective that it is very sexy to me.

Similar thing with Sasha Grey. When she was the 18-year-old sensation in the industry, I thought she was pretentious and overhyped, thought she would burn out fast.

her Twitch streaming showed me she really is a remarkable person. Charismatic, good humored, multi-faceted, mentally strong. it has changed how I view her scenes from years ago.

There are so many girls that i had to block or unfollow simply because they can't keep their composure , go on hating on men (big red flag, when over 90% subscribers are men and pay for your content) getting all political or just pure negativity, the worst ones are keep begging subscribers to give them money or buy them this or that.

Hmm that is an interesting point. You are right, that would affect how I enjoy their work.

and the thing is, Tom Cruise and Jimmy Page are actually both on social media! But they are professional about it

Tom Cruise posted a video showing a stunt for the next Mission Impossible movie, Jimmy Page posted a tribute to fellow guitarist Jeff Beck (RIP).

They are not firing off, they are careful about how they use the platforms. It seems that makes all the difference

I see what you mean. I am the same way. It is not just an economic thing but sentiment as well. More sentiment, really, as surely I could afford to continue supporting and my one missing sale won't truly hurt them, but if they are the type of person with intentions to harm others, I can't connect in a way to enjoy their material, certainly not the way I had before. I try not to put my money toward any entertainers who put their money and efforts toward hurting people, but also I just don't get the same dopamine release from their work once I find out that they suck.

Composure! that is an interesting choice of word. yes I think that is a big difference maker

something many people are still learning about having social media presence. The importance of composure

You would hopefully not shout opinions and controversial things at just anyone you meet in real life. So why is that common behavior on social media?

.....Then again, the wealthiest men in the world (who also happens to own twitter) seems to have poor composure online. so what does that tell us about the platform haha

in a way, i agree. I've become turned off by some girls by things they've posted. Though not necessarily of a political nature.

Though, also of a political nature. Someone above said that they found it troubling when a girl posts things that are opposite of their beliefs. I have the same reaction. (extreme things, i can imagine we all have an idea here)

That said, I also have a reaction when girls are dead silent when big things are going on.

There are still a number of girls I follow though, but I do tend to think that these peek behind the curtain hasn't really been good overall, because there are certainly girls i like, who I no longer like for one reason or another.

On the flip side, it could be argued that we aren't allowing these people to be people. People have opinions. Sometimes they have negative emotions. We are placing them on some type of pedestal, expecting them to be perfect... perfectly neutral (or perfectly political), with no emotions about anything, no bad words about anyone... That too, is wrong....

This thread reminded me that I lost a really good one.

Totally nasty GG performer. Pretty and dirty the way all GG performers should be. Pretty new to the industry too, so she was going to get sooo much money from me of over the coming years. Found out she's on that Republican BS. There are certain things I 100% do not fuck with and that's one of the things. I almost separated the art from the artist for that performer but nah. can't do it.

I feel it's somewhat harder to do the whole "separate the art from the artist" with porn and pornstars. Because porn is so much more of an intimate experience than say a Hollywood movie or music.

Personally, I find a social conscious to be a turn on. Without knowing specifically which performer Ian was referring to, I cannot respond to that person's viewpoints. However, you dropped some hints such as saying this person was a star in the 90's and posts extreme viewpoints. Thus, I have an idea of who you might be referring to, but there can be more than one porn star from that era doing that.

Though I don't visit this person's social media much and haven't in a while, I noticed a certain porn star from the 90's and into the 2000's posting far right-wing, alt right beliefs. This person has the right to their viewpoints, though I was turned off by how they promote attacks on democracy from a certain ex-president. I'll stick with the theme on this thread of not naming people unless it's in a positive way for now, but it's no secret who this ex-president is.

Though I appreciate respecting people's privacy, when we post our viewpoints online they're no longer private. We're choosing to make them public. Thus, we're not breeching anybody's privacy by naming the people we're referring to and if we don't there could be speculation as to who it is. However, for now, I'll still follow the theme of not name dropping the pornstar.

I don't. I think no one has an obligation to provide their thoughts on a given subject. people have a right to "no comment"

It is one of my issues with social media. I hate that there is now an expectation for constant reaction and commentary to everything

Just can't stand the "hot take" culture. click bait and rage bait and the business of saying controversial things.

I would prefer silence from people on matters that they are ignorant about and unqualified to speak on

Reminds me of that old Dave Chappelle bit about the rapper Ja Rule being on news channels giving his reaction when 9/11 happened. Why the hell should we care what Ja Rule has to say about an international terrorist attack? Lol

I don't expect perfection. but negativity and alienating behaviors have consequences. All thoughts are not equal, all behavior is not equal

It is not wrong to think differently about someone who insults me and holds harsh opinions that are against my principles. these things matter

Anyone who really wants to know what retired performer I am referring to can figure it out just by looking at my post history.

But I did not start this thread to call her out or discuss her viewpoints.

also I know the tone of this forum is more respectful to the pornstars, so we won't get more specific.

My question is more general. Does knowing things about pornstars affect how you view their porn, and how do you deal with it

From the responses so far.... Yes it does, and the way to deal with it is to avoid knowing!

Yes, that is the big divergence for me. I remember when it was considered impolite to announce your politics and viewpoints so publicly

"Never in mixed company," my parents used to to tell me.

To me, social media is broadcasting. It's like standing on a stage and shouting at the world

It's still weird to me that people nowadays are so comfortable with that.

I want to say it's a generational thing, but there are plenty of people in my generation who are firing off on social media every day.

It doesn't bother me. I don't need performers political or social views to match with mine to enjoy their scenes. I don't actively look for their views on things, but when I become aware of it I don't hold it against them when it comes to watching their scenes. If they were running for office in an area where I could vote for them then it would be different, and I would definitely be holding it against them then!

Always feet n ass. In that order.

For me, watching fucking and sucking usually gets kind of boring and "same old, same old." Adding more spit, dirty talk, or loudness doesn't change this. I don't remember ever becoming a fan of somebody based just on this. I just don't care how deep somebody fucks or sucks, as long as they're not hurting another person. The threads on bj's, dp, anal, etc. don't draw me in. However, if somebody expresses a strong passion and awareness of sociopolitical issues affecting society, I'm drawn to them and get engaged in what they say. This is why I'm drawn to some performers even if I haven't watched their scenes.

Works both ways for me. Examples;

1. Jessie Rogers - I felt horrible watching her recalling her porn days and before that I loved every single one of her scenes. I can't enjoy a scene if the performer isn't having a good time. She's back and I've seen pics of her on this forum, she's even prettier than before and her body somehow got hotter with her already perfect ass now more perfect! I can't watch her stuff though because I have a mental block.

2. Karmen Karma - was always a huge fan. When she took a break to get a kid, she was interviewed and basically expressed why she loves porn and the attention and the people so much. I'm now even more turned on by her scenes.

Have other examples but yeah, this goes both ways. It either enhances or completely takes away the enjoyment for me.

Another example, finding out that Jennifer White has been in a long term marriage makes me find her even more hot. Basically a married slut getting fucked by other men on camera 🔥

Felt the same way the first time I heard Jessie Rogers speak on porn, and didn't know who she was before. Then, I saw another interview with her where she expressed more nuanced experiences and perspectives on porn instead of all good or all bad. Here's a link to that interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ln05aKwyPM She seems very insightful and her input seems well-thought out. She not only spoke about porn but also more about who she is as a person, such as that she enjoys nature walks which I also do.

I think knowing too much about a performer CAN be bad but not always. Ive encounter one performer that I found their true colors and it turned me off by them after liking them for so long. Outside of that one performer I find that following performers closely and knowing alot about them is a great thing. Looking at a performer only as a sex object isnt good bc they are humans that have interests and even can be relatable. Its not always about sex. Then knowing what they are into can make the sex hotter. For example, following Lacy Lennon closely I know she is the best at B/G/G. She has said in a live show that she loves B/G/G the best. Now you probably could tell that by watching her scenes but if you couldnt then maybe knowing it will make you watch them more closely and appreciate those types of scenes even more. But not just what Lacy loves the best but that she is an amazing person. Same can be said about the likes of Sinn Sage, Adriana Chechik, and Abigail Mac to name a few imo. Following them closely I have an even more appreciation of how amazing they are. And if you never followed closely Abi you are missing out. She is so relatable. She is a beautiful and successful woman so from a far you might think she isnt relatable but she is totally relatable. I think about how much other performers like Violet Myers, Kazumi, and Alex Coal love their fanbase too and also are relatable.

For me the only reason why I think some people dont like to follow performers closely bc they dont want to say or do something that isnt cool and therefore that performer will be turned off by it and that person fantasy and fandom will be ruined. As long as you act normal and treat them like humans and respect them I dont think its a bad thing to get to know performers especially your fav ones better. Truth be told they want to get to know their fans. I want to meet their fans at conventions and stuff like that. Ive heard some even say since they never really had friends in high school they appreciate the friends theyve made within their community of their fans. So they appreciate the support and the love.

I personally enjoy listening to podcast, talking to them on social media, and watching live shows and hearing them talk. Its refreshing the things Ive learned about them from a personal and professional standpoint. I want honesty and sometimes those brutal honesty can be shocking and something Ive never expected but it also helps me understand how the industry truly can be. Oh the stories Ive been told by so many performers. But yeah I enjoy getting to know performers alot. Doesnt take away from watching their scenes for the most part. It makes watching their scenes even hotter knowing what I know lol.

They're a couple of pornstars whom I barely watch but always check out their Twitter and discord because they share the same political and social views as me. I always look at it as an added bonus.
I believe one issue that all content creators and pornstars should speak out on social media is the Christian right and the republican party's "war on porn". That's one issue that big-name pornstars shouldn't be silent on.

The posts on here are mainly written from fans' perspectives, which I understand considering that this is a fans' board. As somebody who was in some videos back in the day and who continues doing live cam, I am thinking from a performer's perspective as I write this. Though I cannot speak for every performer, writing on political issues is a way of showing who I am and expressing myself in my words. If people disagree or don't care, then that's their right. Doing porn, I've sometimes had to play into scripts and be portrayed the ways producers and directors decide instead of who I am. Doing more specifically BBW/Chunky porn, I sometimes did videos with scripts playing into the "fat gal" stereotypes that didn't reflect who I was. For example, I much prefer to eat fruit than Twinkies and do exercise. I'm not alone in saying this and imagine other performers can connect even though I cannot speak for anybody other than myself.

That said, I have no problem with acting scripts, but sometimes performers may wish to show another side to themselves (not just physically but also mentally) than what's portrayed in the videos when playing out somebody else's script.

I think that we can appreciate the fact that performers have an offscreen life and personality without being privy to details about that life and personality. I know that mainstream actors don't just act, that mainstream singers and rappers don't just record and perform, and that porn performers don't just fuck on camera. I assume that artists have lives outside of work, however, my chosen relationship with them is with the self that is mediated through their work. I purposely seek out interviews of actors in which they talk about the art of acting, and I tend to avoid interviews where they just shoot the shit because for me it's usually just their artistic self that I'm interested in, not who they are as a wife, as as a politically engaged citizen, as a gamer, or whatever else. Of course if I enjoy someone's work I hope that person has a full and happy personal life, but I don't generally feel any need to know what their personal life entails unless they're a veteran in their field or dead.

I've found that I'm sometimes distracted from an artist's work not just by knowing negative things about the artist, but even by positive or neutral knowledge. For example, I don't care either way if an actor is a vegan, that neutral info imo, but when an actor plays a non-vegan character and that character eats meat it always immediately pops into my head that the meat is probably fake, and then I wonder if the actor has moral reservations about playing a character who eats meat. That's an example of a minor distraction, but it's something that briefly takes me out of the world of what I'm watching, whereas if I didn't know that the actor was a vegan I wouldn't have that distraction. A porn example would be when a female performer who regularly performs in IR scenes lists her favorite male performers to work with, and none of them are black. To me that's neutral knowledge, but as a result of knowing I sometimes find myself a bit skeptical of her acting when I watch her with black talent. This has happened to me with at least two performers who I can think of, both of whom I watch primarily for IR. I experienced something similar when Shane Diesel admitted that in his private life he's into BBWs. Again, that's neutral to me because it's just his preference, but it's a bit of info about him that pops into mind when I'm trying to enjoy any of the many, many great scenes he's shot with skinny talents.

I agree with that. I've always found the "shut up and dribble" approach to be unfair. At the same time I don't usually feel the need to know the political views of porn performers and other artists whose work I follow. There are performers on OF whose political views are similar to mine and I keep up with what they say, but I know about them because of their politics and I don't follow their work.

I don't follow any performers on social media, not a single one.

Though I know they are human and not just sex objects, I have no desire to know what their politics are, what they are having for supper, if they are having financial difficulties or if their kids are sick.

It just doesn't interest me just like it doesn't interest me to know what's going on with a Hollywood star or sports figure. I follow none of them either and their lives do not interest me even while going to movies or sports events.

Actually, some porn stars become the religious right, and there is some conservatism in porn. Much libertarianism from what I've noticed. Some porn performers might not be into politics or hold strong political views, and I don't think most post about political issues publicly.

Some became politically active in the midst of proposed legislation mandating condoms in porn. They mostly opposed this and most who advocated in favor from what I've noticed were no longer in porn or contracted HIV they say in the industry. However, that push led by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation seems to have gone away after California voters rejected a measure in 2016 to require condoms in porn statewide.

Why anyone would follow a porn star's social media or even care what they say or don't say about anything non porn related is beyond me.

An actual question for some of the star followers here, "what are you expecting them to actually say?"

^I expect them to *not* say or do stupid things.

Tessa alluded to porn stars who are "conservative." I dont support those people and want to make sure my money does not go to people who think like them. It's similar to how I don't support Mindgeek with money; how people choose to behave is important to some consumers. I just don't want to contribute to someone I know is going to do something wrong or malicious when I could easily not do so.

But why do you actually expect anything from them is the point I'm asking? Why are you holding your favorite star is such high regard with anything other than their latest scene?

I mean, I've attempted to get through some of the interviews on this site, and while there are some exceptions to the rule, the overall theme seems to be that majority of the girls barely make it out of high school.

in the case of the pornstar who inspired this thread, when she started her social media, at first it was mostly her posting pics and vids of herself and promoting her paid content

It was nice to see. especially after so much mystery about her. and as I mentioned, I had sentimental reasons for following her.

Unfortunately she started posted more and more political stuff, and being more and more abrasive.

Now her social media is 90% politics and all the way abrasive.

I explained earlier in the thread how the extra content of social media can enhance my enjoyment of porn. Others have shared similar thoughts. Several examples have been given

In the case I mention, it felt like a bait and switch to me. I never would have followed her if I knew she was just going to fire off about politics

I think she does not have clarity about what she is doing with her platforms.... or herself, frankly.

at the minimum, I would expect them not to call their porn fans "cucks" and "degenerates."

It's a pretty natural thing to want positive interactions and extra content with a favorite star, porn or otherwise

But that is the rub, isn't it. Does it change how you enjoy their scenes if you know more about them.

You don't seem to care, and that's understandable. But can you really not understand the opposite side of the equation?

Call me sentimental. I've just always thought of the performers as more than fuck meat.

Almost universally a performer adopts a persona, e.g. "Eliza Ibarra" is a creation and not a real person. So I'm at a loss as to why anyone should care what a fictional porn persona thinks about anything other than porn. If the real-life person has opinions on topics other than porn they can express these opinions on many platforms under their true identity.

I don't follow any porn stars on Twitter or any other social media and the only way I know they've said something stupid or greatly at odds with my core beliefs is if someone mentions it on this forum. I have zero interest in Onlyfans and the possibility of communicating with their persona.

I don't think ignoring their utterances on anything other than porn is treating them as "fuck meat" as another poster said. For me it's simply a fictitious persona sharing opinions I may or may not agree with.

I expect them to be a normal, non-malicious person. That's not a high bar, really.

As far as those interviews, they aren't the most engaging/intellectually stimulating questions, and one of them is always "what was the earliest age you had sex?"

Lezzyist, I agree with you about interviews. With some exceptions, porn stars or sex workers more broadly are often asked the same cliche questions. Typically not very insightful or stimulating. Sometimes, they ask very basic questions to make them look "stupid" if they don't answer it right, such as "who's the president of the U.S" to somebody from the U.S. Then, if they answer it correct, it's like "wow, you're so smart" sarcastically. Almost, as a way to mock pornstars and play into the "dumb pornstar" stereotype and assume we're not even politically conscious enough to know basic facts. Maybe, some pornstars post about politics to challenge this stereotype and show they are politically conscious.

For these reasons and more, I mostly stay away from doing interviews and prefer to just write on a blog. Actually, I blogged on this topic, the worst questions to ask sex workers: https://veganvixentessa.blogspot.com/2022/07/worst-questions-to-ask-sex-workers.html It was intended to be a series, but I only did one entry on this topic thus far. When people ask to interview me, I ask them first what they will be asking about and I don't do many interviews. Partly because I'm not a major star and partly because I prefer to speak in my own voice and share what I wish to instead of just respond to what somebody else asks.

At AVN this year, I was attending on my own and not with any porn company. I noticed an organization I was familiar with tabling and asked about somebody I knew and respected from the organization. They said she stepped out and would be back. As I was waiting by myself, somebody who does a YouTube channel and had 2 colleagues with him asked if I can do an interview. When I asked what this was about, he said the effects of viewing porn on society. My focus is more on the rights and safety of the sex workers, but I agreed to the interview and steered it in a sex workers' rights direction.

He initially thought I was a viewer, then I told him I did some videos a long time ago and still did cam. The first question he asked was how porn affects people's mental health. I cannot speak for other people's mental health, just my own. He then asked about whether porn benefits society in any ways. This is very nuanced and hard to classify porn as all good or all bad. The same can be asked about many things in the mainstream media.

Overall, he was very respectful during the interview. He didn't interrupt and respected my boundaries. Some of the questions sex workers get asked are really more statements in the form of questions where the interviewer is trying to push a certain narrative and get us to conform. It's important to be conscious of when that happens so we don't fall for it.

My favorite question to be asked and one I'm rarely asked is "What are you passionate about?"

Another good question (I think) to ask sex workers and one I'm rarely asked is "What do you want?" Margaret Cho suggested this, one of the few celebrities who has spoken out for sex workers' rights and identified as a former sex worker herself. Though I'm not into stand up comedy, she became my favorite stand up comic for this reason.

Another question I liked was when the guy who interviewed me at AVN asked if I had anything else to add before ending the interview.
