I'm typing this on my bro's computer as it's the only one with internet access right now . He's come to stay for a couple of weeks so we tried to set up a file sharing network via the router that I've had installed and been using successfully for months now . Ran the 'Network Setup Wizard' and now I can't connect to the net . Any suggestions ?

The internet connection works , because I'm using it .
The router works , because I'm working through it .
And the cables are fine because I'm on them now .

I just did an ipconfig on both machines and the problem computer has something odd going on . The results should read -

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection :
connection-specific DNS Suffix :
IP Address .................... : AAA.BBB.C.DDD
Subnet Mask ................... : EEE.FFF.GGG.H
Default Gateway ............... : AAA.BBB.C.D

but instead I'm getting

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection :
connection-specific DNS Suffix :
IP Address .................... : AAA.BBB.X.Y
Subnet Mask ................... : EEE.FFF.GGG.H
Default Gateway ............... :

(with numbers substituted for letters )

Does anyone know how I've messed things up , and more importantly how to fix them ?

The default gateway should point to the router.

Many routers can act as a DHCP server where it assigns the IP address, netmask, gateway and DNS server to any DHCP clients on the network.

Perhaps you used this feature before but switched it off.

Look in Network settings under TCP/IP.
IIRC there's a setting where you can activate dynamic IP settings.
Is this active on your brothers machine?

If your router doesn't include a DHCP server you should copy the TCP/IP settings from your brothers machine. Except for the fourth (and last) number in the IP address. Increment that by 1.

sometimes for god knows what you have to delete the TCP/IP and then reinstall it. Make sure your xp disc is handy before perform this. Also try a crossover cable without the router to make help narrow down the issue.

did you try just typing in the router's # in the location bar and using the emulator most come with? you can see a little further downstream using those.

there's always the tried-and true method of grabbing a paper clip and hard resetting the router.

Thanks for your help , guys : I've got it working again now . Followed Kperv's advice of checking the TCP/IP settings on my network connections ( never done that before ) and found the problem machine had been set to the strange IP address and no Default Gateway . God knows why .

The file transfer is almost working now too , which will be useful .

BTW , James , what do ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew do ? That sounds like it could come in handy in future .

They release/renew the lease on the IP configuration your PC has been assigned by the DHCP server.
If, as it sounds, you're not using the DHCP server in your router (if indeed it has one), you shouldn't need them.

if you're using dhcp, you "lease" the ip addy for a little while-but sometimes when you move the computer or do anything that changes the network's setup things don't adjust to them. this basically flushes the settings that aren't valid anymore and should get you a new ip number.

also, the netshell utility is amazingly helpful in diagnosing and fixing tcp/ip stack issues.

Thanks. Didn't know that one.

Some of my friends are still stuck on Windows :) and occasionally ask for some assistance.
It's getting harder to help them as my memories (nightmares) of Windows disappear into the misty past.

Does netshell come standard with XP, or would one need to get it at microsoft.com?

kperv, i know this is from the most unlikely of sources, but it's probably the most useful thing i've read redmond does good btw, i've got SuSE up and running, thanks again for the advice. windows isn't that bad, considering how many different kinds of hardware it supports and the probably hundreds of thousands of different applications full of bad code. computers are so simple people never bother learning basic concepts, which is 90% of the problem. i can pick up 7 totally unsecured wireless routers right now which blows my mind more than people giving their nest eggs to nigerian scammers. windows can be secure enough if you read things like the instruction manual to your router instead of running around screaming with your head cut off about how evil the world's leader in philanthropy is and how scary spyware is. end of rant, lol.

Sure Windows can be locked down well enough with the proper firewalling. And Win2K doesn't crash that often. I can still crash it at work on occasion. But it's nowhere near the nerveracking experience that Win9x was. NT was more stable though, but I suspect that was partly due to the limited hardware support. Win2K's drivers are it's Achilles heel.
I've never tried XP for more than a few minutes at a time on a test box at work.

Actually until a couple of years ago a standard RedHat install was not safe for newbies.
If you chose to install everything it had nearly all services running, and that without any sort of filtering/firewall activated. Hacker heaven.
These days most, if not every, Linux distro has packet filtering on by default.

I mainly prefer to run Linux because of the greater control over the machine it gives me.
Windows feels like a mysterious black box that I can't configure the way I want to.

Anyway I'm not one of the "Bill is Evil" crowd.
But as a programmer writing stuff that mostly runs on Windows I can tell you this: The API's in Windows suck ###%&&%%&###!!!!! Ahem. Sorry. I just went a few rounds with the TAPI recently. What a load of #&%#&#++###.
Anybody who would foist such a nightmare on the programmers of the world deserve... Well I don't really know exactly what they deserve, but I'm sure it would chafe something awful.
