Hopefully, by the time those scenes actually come out, this incident will be long behind us. Not forgotten. Just behind us. |

If one wishes to do scenes that don't require condom use, we're all free to shoot for the hundreds of video companies and websites that only create condom-free content. As you said, and I agree, it's all about choice... |

| JohnHenry Member 165 Posts 3/09 | Statistics are scary things, when they aren't provided in context. We'll use California as a microcosm of HIV transmission. At first glance, the total number of HIV & AIDS cases in California (alone) seems imposing: 153,232 as of April 30th, 2009. Yet, this alone isn't an accurate reflection on the issue, as (at least in the context of heterosexual porn) the exposure category is important: Heterosexual sex transmission cases total 13,132, or only 7% of that total (http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/aids/Documents/HIVAIDSMergedApr09.pdf). This number is up 1,333 cases from one year earlier, 11,799. (http://www.cdph.ca.gov/data/statistics/Documents/OA-2008-04HIVAIDSMerged.pdf) Given that there are 36.75 million residents of California, the (base) odds of contracting HIV through male to female sexual contact are about 3,243 to 1. Obviously, there are mitigating factors such as intravenous drug use (not that a porn star would ever do such a thing...), increasing the number of partners, etc. The system of monthly HIV testing does a great deal to offset the risks of infection, though; most civilians aren't tested monthly, or even annual basis. By using the annual number of people contracting AIDS in California, it's entirely fair to say the average straight porn star is more than twice as likely to die in a car wreck on her way to work, than to contract AIDS on the job. The question isn't 'is porn a dangerous job because of STDs?' any more than any other job is risky. A good number of people who worked in the world trade center probably thought they had pretty safe jobs. Rather, the fact is many people are willing to work in jobs with risks (be it in the military, as police officers, air traffic controllers, miners, porn) because of a combination of enjoying their jobs, and the financial rewards that job offers. Condoms aren't a cure-all for STDs, and AIDS is no longer a death sentence. I'm not advocating STDs should be ignored, either. Porn is a market based industry, and performers who don't feel they should have to work without condoms certainly are entitled to work only with companies that permit (and in some cases encourage) their use. That's the trade off that comes with any job; if I worked at a fast food chain, and didn't like my working conditions flipping burgers, I'm certainly welcome to quit that job too. John |

| Dubious_Leftovers Senior Member And on that fateful day, the hatred consumed me... 1423 Posts 3/09 | BUT... Given the choice in porn, I prefer without. I think the vast majority of viewers do, hence the fact most scenes are condomless. I don't think anybody here should be made to feel like a prick if they agree with "without" as a preference. It's porn, and the question is which do you prefer to view whilst getting off. It's more or less a question of visuals opposed to a moral one. Stating a genuine viewing preference is just being honest. Nothing more... |
| cand86 Member 164 Posts 8/08 | So, either way is cool with me, and I like that there are companies out there advocating safe sex (good for you!). Part of me wonders if, for more "generic scenes" (a.k.a. those not focused on pussy-gaping and whatnot), if the female condom wouldn't be a good compromise. |
| goldenballs Member 343 Posts 7/04 | but I don't mind condoms in scenes. I wouldn't want to see them in every scene of course. But I like to watch the girl put them on the dude and even take it off him at the end. I like watching a girl take off a condom half way through for a BJ, and then put a new one back on. I guess its just another something different. There's a Taryn Thomas scene she did for one of the Jack's Teen America or My first Porn line, where Eric Masterson I think cums in the condom, and Taryn drinks the cum rom the condom. There's something gross about that but at the same time I like that sort of thing too. |

| Riograndeler Senior Member 1033 Posts 11/08 | It is big mistake to think, that mandatory condom use will force viewers to buy safe sex videos. No. You will not watch the film, if this film is boring, not interesting for you. You will not eat gruel if it is not your taste. Viewers will find condom free porn from Europa, Russia, Japan... We have our old collections. I understand very well, that performers always take the serious risk, when they fuck without condoms, but I think it is true, that this risky stuff give more of fun for many porn fans. It is dangerous of course, but it is not bad, because it give pleasure for many people! Unprotected sex always will be risky! Life without risks is impossible! Every policeman, fireman, stuntman and many others take the risk every day, when they go to work. I think that porn is not work for everybody! You should not take the risk if you are not ready. |

However, since there is a consumer demand for unprotected sex, this will present a challenge... The STD problem could be solved if all porn performers were sexual abstinent outside of their work, except for monogamous relationships (with partners who also strictly subscribe to monogamy) following the same rules that would be mandatory for porn performers: Thorough testing for all common STDs and no sexual contact before all test results are confirmed. No 'test today, work tomorrow'. There would have to be at least a 3-week quarantine period. For HIV, one test is not enough, since if you were infected the day before the test, your result would most likely be negative. You'd have to have a second test after about two weeks to be sure. Sure, i know, this won't happen. And it wouldn't comply with Cal/OSHA either. BTW i'm also one of the consumers who demands unprotected sex. It's a weird situation, to know that what you want to see is not only not PC, but potentially dangerous to the performers whose work you enjoy. But, like some others who posted here, i just don't enjoy seeing condom sex. And the thought of porn that complies to the rules of safe sex that i stated above is just - weird. The most risky thing is an anal creampie. If a performer continues to perform without a condom because she fears not being booked anymore, she should at least stop creampies to lower her infection risk. |

Taking antibiotics on a regular basis isn't like taking aspirin. After developing an antibiotic resistance there's no cure left for the unavoidable cases. Edited by - juha on 6/12/2009 6:08:50 AM |

| killbillvol69 All-Star Member ^Lucy Pinder 18631 Posts 4/08 | Since that first relationship, I've been far smarter, and have always used a condom. Never once have a said "ah, fuck it" and didn't bother with a condom. And I've never cum during intercourse again. So, when I watch porn with a condom, it just makes me think of the fact that I can't cum while wearing a condom, and what it does is prevent me from blowing my load while watching the scene. Since I only watch porn for one purpose and one purpose only, which is to have an orgasm, I therefore have essentially no use whatsoever for porn where a condom is used. Having said that, I fully recognize that condoms are a smart decision during sex (which is why I use them myself), so I applaud those performers/companies who do use condoms. But I can't watch it. |
| HeidiHanson Member Make it Real or Forgeddaboutit! 76 Posts 5/09 | John, could you give me more info on that? How would someone sue the company, if they knowingly consent to the sex? -- additionally, I am pro condom, and have issues myself about performing without using condoms. For little miss mackenzie, if you require condoms, you will not work. I do not know the rules cal/osha has imposed, but wicked is the only one I know of allowing condom use (even then its optional and I am sure they pressure for NO). No other company I have worked for has allowed it. So if they are in violation, they apparently do not care. I have asked to use condoms and never have been offered that. This is something I would like more info about if anyone has it. Is there a CalOsha ruling anywhere we can look up? Also I would agree traditional condoms (the white / cream colored trojans) would look horrible. BUT I found the ones they use in Japan, Crown Skinless Skin, and Paradise Ultra. Both are amazingly clear, with a slight pink tinge. Hardly notice them at all. So that debate is really unsubstantiated. Does anyone have the general percentages of heterosexual transmission rates for: Girl to girl Boy to girl no creampie, standard sex (precum only i would guess) Boy to girl with use of nonoxyl nine sponge or lube or spermicide Boy to girl anal I have a few scenes lined up that will not allow condoms. I just agreed to them, now I am obviously having second thoughts!! If I do not allow the no condom scene, the job is not viable. I could name names, but I probably shouldn't. It is for some of the bigger production/ web sites out there right now. Heidi Hanson - Blonde With Bush Baby!! |
| duefuss Member Not a shred of evidence exists in favor of the idea that life is serious - Brendan Gill 723 Posts 4/09 | I feel I must apologize for some of the comments made by my fellow males in this thread and the related discussion of a recent positive test for HIV for some poor woman in the business. Some here seem to imply that an increased risk for AIDS/HIV and other STDs is something you should accept as a performer. You’re a porn star, so you owe them, your audience, a performance without condoms, without the precautions some of them even admit they take themselves. They paid their twenty bucks, and, by God, you better not dilute their masturbatory fantasies by showing a rubber onscreen. I have heard dire predictions that onscreen condom use will kill the porn business altogether because it’s not arousing to see a dick with a rubber on it. Robin Williams once said that God gave men a brain and a penis and only enough blood to use one at a time. Some of the posters here have been thinking with their dicks. I hope it’s not all they ever think with. I hope that some of them read over what they have been saying and feel as selfish, unfeeling, contemptible and silly as they ought to feel. Sometimes I am ashamed to be male. If we were talking about their daughters or sisters or someone else they cared about risking AIDS/HIV, I wonder if these posters would glibly dismiss the risk as 3,243 to 1 or say that, anyway AIDS is no longer a death sentence. I wonder what they would say to someone who whined that rubbers were a big turn off for them. Ms. Von, Ladies and Gentlemen of the porn industry, please. Practice safe sex. Stay healthy and stay around. Don’t wait for the Law to do it, or trust your industry to do it. Do it yourselves. Your industry will not be destroyed by using condoms or performing only with trustworthy friends. We, your audience, will go on happily whacking off to the best of you whether the condoms are showing or not. Personally, I assure you that Ms. Von could read the phone book and it would arouse me (even if she doesn’t answer her fan mail). No rubber is going to diminish that. What’s the guy who thinks they’re a real turn off going to do if everybody’s wearing them? Start whacking off to infomercials? No, he’s going to keep buying the porn like the rest of us, condoms or no condoms. Porn has flourished through Fundamentalist condemnation and feminist outrage and every manner of social assault because it answers a basic human need. A condom isn’t going to erase that need. They would have to redesign the human being to do that. You don’t owe us anything, and you certainly don’t owe us the worry and fear of getting HIV, much less the terrible heartache of having it. |

| HeidiHanson Member Make it Real or Forgeddaboutit! 76 Posts 5/09 | Yes, if we HAD a choice, I think it would (seriously) be about 75% of us who would use them. But, we don't. Legally we "do" have the choice..but the catch 22 is this (and this is from a real conversation with a huge studio): Hi Heidi, we have a scene for you. Cool, can I use a condom? I prefer to. Well, we really can't sell that overseas if we do, and in USA its a low seller too. For this scene we would require you do not use one... Hmm.. So either no condom, or no scene? I am afraid so.. Its not US, its the CONSUMER (<< ie, passing the buck here)..you understand.... Yes, I am afraid I do. Too bad, I give a good show, condom only makes me less hestitant...and more wild! .. So our choice is to work or not work. I looked up the law with CalOsha, and they are actually required by law to protect us, by using condoms. So even though they do not, if they got reported/complained upon, they just would pay the fines (petty for multimillionaires) and they would MAYBE have to pay for damages, ie, health care and management IF someone caught something. Woopedeee doo. Its a calculated risk they are more than willing to take, at our expense. ... well, thats the deal. A raw one, yes. Suprising, no. I also hope this last round of HIV scare changes the industry. Everyone (agents, producers, etc) say that 'would be the end of the industry' but I seriously doubt it. Have you seen russian/czec / japanese performers??? They are soo stiff and square. Nothing can replace us good ole american apple pie gals... things might slow until they got to a point then they would be back to normal...it would take maybe a year. The funny thing is that Wicked uses them, and one other studio, I forget who, and they do not have a faulty sales lineup. Meaning, they do not suffer from "lack of sales".. I think its mostly that nobody wants to be the one to start the trend. The economy is sucky for about 4 years now (around the time of the last scare) so they are all paranoid to make a bad move in an insecure economic environment... Its not their fault in many ways, I think what would change it is support from consumers writing in saying they are OK with condoms, so they feel ok doing it. Like writing to your local congressman! I still would like to know what the risk is for non-creampie b/g... I never find a real statistical answer...I am still on the fence about my upcoming scenes.. ugh. | pornlaw Member 578 Posts 10/05 | Each performance is an act of free speech. While the companies are often credited with protecting the First Amendment, what people forget is that the performers are really on the front line of the fight. Its their acts that are protected, not just the embodiment of them on film. I believe that a performer has the Constitutionally protected right to make a decision that they, as an artist, do not want to use a condom as an expression of their free speech rights. I think a less restricted alternative to forced condom use may be a one shoot one test policy. Each shoot will require a new HIV/STD screening. It accomplishes the same goal without possibly infringing on anyone's Constitutional rights. Michael www.AdultBizLaw.com www.2257Safe.com |
