Often when I look for information on porn feature films from the 80s and 90s, I find that the publishing and distributing companies simply no longer exist and that there is also very little trace of their past existence on the internet.

So how does it work, who owns the rights?

Do films become royalty-free out of spite? Which implies that we can exchange / upscale them without problems..
Or maybe the catalog of films bought by another company?

And if not, how do we know?
