| girth peso Member 125 Posts 5/06 | My local nyc porn store has a lot of hardcore fans of porn. Just yesterday, i heard one of the regulars pissed off about Corporate Porn. He said it was killing quality. Who are the corporate Porn? is it Vivid, Redlight, or Evil Angel, or any other well known company. Who are the MOM n' Pop Porn companies? AND WHO SHOULD THE CONSUMERS SUPPORT TO ERASE THE PORN GLUT? [Link] |

| croy Platinum Member Discovry 4574 Posts 3/04 | Your regular is off base - it is the slipshod fly by night (or Leisure Time) operation that cranks out low quality crap. For Evil Angel and Red Light District, among others, lines are mostly director owned. I would hardly call the directors that are or have been under the Evil Angel umbrella low quality either. I think you have to be pretty good already to be carried by them. The directors with RLD seem to have had (before the exodus) a faster rate of releases, but it wasn't bad for what it was. Stylistically as well as castwise it allstarted looking the same though. What you really need to pay attention to is the directors of the movies. With company owned lines they might not be credited, or it might be credited to somebody else. But with the director owned lines, the level of quality will be consistant. If anything, it is the directors with larger per movie sales that can have the better bankrolls. This can translate not only into more time editing (and more skilled editors) but better camera/lighting work and make-up. Edited by - croy on 4/22/2007 5:55:44 AM |

When I managed my video store, this was huge, I can tell you that I could not keep them in stock. Then whoosh, a whole flood of this POV gonzo style. But still I could not keep Seymore and Shane in stock. I can tell you that people know when its just formula. |

The big guys take the heat because they are most visible. I think it leads people to stick w/ what they know and not trust anything thats new. |

| fundo Member "All knowledge ultimately means self knowledge."--Bruce Lee 97 Posts 4/07 | I heard the "you're gonna be the next Jenna" type of approach from Jules. So, he relies on the work of others (in this case, trying to get a naive young woman to agree to a gangbang, that will put her on the road to becoming a big star) to make his money off the backs of underpaid performers who fall for the "your gonna be a star" routine. The people at the bottom of the food chain--the women, are the most poorly paid, but are also the most important to the success of any adult production. If Jules had been honest, he might have said: "I want you exclusively so nobody else will see you before my releases; I don't want to pay you more than 1k per scene; I want anal, and gangbang anal, and gangbang and kink from you; I'm going to make you work hard. And when it's all over, you'll will still be unknown, possibly burned out, and then you can work with any agency you want." That'd be more honest. I like his movies though, very good and creative. | croy Platinum Member Discovry 4574 Posts 3/04 | Yes, it is necessary for people to make the product. However Erik is not depending on others to provide the support services needed to make porn but rather supplies or contracts them himself. That presumably is his point. Without the larger companies, distribution of a given line would be more limited as new lines struggle to get sufficient distribution. More operating expense is spent on sales reps because there are more small companies with less product each trying to get into the larger market place. Efficiencies of scale exist for a reason. |

| Chico Wang Member 775 Posts 1/04 | However, it behooves me to think that anyone can excorciate company owners for being businessmen. Porn is a business. Shit, I can't watch Hollywood movies anymore because it's so corporate and generally watch foreign movies because they tend to be more 'real' particularly the ones coming out of South America and the Fifth Generation of Chinese directors. The best option for most and those I admire is to start their own companies or, if they're lucky and not prone to cookie cutter status, is to lock themselves with real ownership deals with companies who's presidents actually are true pornographers. Life is a risk. Business is a risk. I can't knock any company owner that treats his company like a business in order to make money. Shit, I've shot so many movies where I actually lost money in the long run but that was my decision to do so. Fortunately, other ventures made up the difference. Porn is a business but the best porn out there are the ones where the companies care about each and every movie and allow the best directors to shoot with their own creativity. But to knock company owners as simply businessmen is naive at times. It's not up to me and I probably shouldn't say this, but there are alot of businessmen out there that make poor decisions. After all, we all make poor decisions at times, don't we? We're human. Ultimately, it is the consumer who'll decide what they're going to buy or avoid. If they don't want cookie cutter crap, then you'll see it flushed down the toilet as they choose to buy quality over McPorn. Chico Edited by - Chico Wang on 4/26/2007 10:39:28 AM |

| girth peso Member 125 Posts 5/06 | When u were in Diabolic, did they force you to make that many porn releases every month? i love your innovative style...like oral consumption and the no swallowing allowed.. Did u ever feel they squeezed you artistically, so much u got tired of it and quit. p.s. r u going to start your own company? |
| Chico Wang Member 775 Posts 1/04 | Regarding starting my own company, I'll keep that to myself and keep you posted. I have alot of investors and alot of money myself. But right now, I am rusty and trying to get a hang of the new HD world and shooting for some big named people. I hate jumping around company to company. I know freelance directors that seem to be in 10 companies a year. I am more concerned about being a part of a family where I have freedom to do what I want. My decision to resign from Diabolic was a business decision. Simply put. I have nothing but the highest respect for the owner but it was simply a business decision. On top of that, I was burnt out and needed the two months off after feeling like a gynecologist and proctologist for years. Edited by - Chico Wang on 4/26/2007 11:16:07 AM |

| croy Platinum Member Discovry 4574 Posts 3/04 | We haven't dictated the entry of anybody. Sure, potentally the market is there along with profits, but a wider survey shows the glut. So unless you believe you can make better than average product (in the eyes of the consumer) then it isn't a good buisness move. So the consumer has made the proposition look tempting on the surface. But a deeper look gives a more complex story. |
| aussie_guy77 Member 121 Posts 4/07 | The quality of porn has dropped over the last few years due to companies cutting cost thinking the only way to sell your product is to bottom out. This is not the strategy that will last long term. You see some of the biggest companies now resorting to repacking the same old repetitive stuff with no concept of what the consumer really wants. In the long term if prices remain low and the quality of product doesn't improve the consumer will not buy it. Look ahead to 5 years how many companies today will be around. Who knows? At the end of the day your name only takes you so far, long term you need have strategies in place with the most important providing the customer with what they want. If you need to sell at $30-$35 then do it, if you have a superior product it will sell. |
| thatguy6673 New Member 1 Posts 7/07 | I think this thread is people posturing to try to look like they are more 'extreme' and 'cutting edge' then other people. Sort of like the record store clerks in 'high fidelity'-trying to cultivate an image of being anti-establishment and wheeling out some obscure porn director to make themselves feel better about their 'superior' taste. My opinion is large organizations that make a lot of money do so for a reason. I actually LOVE vivid movies, and don't understand why people here always think they are so 'soft core' and 'rip offs'. I'd buy a vivid movie over 'stupid young semen slurpers who take 5 cocks up the butt with a donkey punch' any day. I think its laughable to say any contract girl with vivid is a prude that 'doesn't know how to fuck'. I actually dislike a lot of gonzo movies, since they are boring/feature plain girls with NO BOOBS that look like they are still in high school being gang banged by more than one guy (I dont' buy porn to look at 3 dicks and 3 guys grimacing while they have sex with someone who looks like a little boy). One of my favorite dvds right now is a vivid anal compilation. The girls are gorgeous and aren't prudish-come examples: Brianna Banks getting throat fucked and pounded up the ass by a guy acting like a stupid hick - she's no dead lay that's just 'skating through for a paycheck' Mercedez, former miss nude universe, getting choked lightly while getting fucked up the butt - she doesn't act like nothing is happening (and not every woman has to be contorting like an epilepsy victim during sex to be hot) savannah sampson-has LOTS of anal sex and gets called every dirty name that could be thought of Nicole Sheridan-that girl works for her money, getting double teamed by a guy and girl, slapping dicks, spitting all over of course there are some duds, but the dud ratio is FAR less than some of these 'obscure gonzo' guys. vivid also makes great all girl movies. extreme janine is AWESOME-tons of anal sex, hot wax, spanking, trash talking, bondage, and gorgeous women. i'm willing to accept that some gorgeous women won't ever take it up the butt-but I think you may be gay if you don't like seeing girls like sunrise adams, devon, and krystal steal 'only' sucking dick and getting pounded in their puss. don't even get me started on the girls like lanny barbie and cassidey-they are more energetic, perverted, and gorgeous than any of the minor league 'just turned 18' 'anal gaper' girls that are worshipped here. vivid makes money because they have a product consumers want and they are smart business people. also, they serve an important filtering function: companies that have a strong brand name dont' want to tarnish it by putting out trash. they spend tons of money building a brand and marketing it. sure some stuff they put out is trash-put its a lot less trash then other companies, and they do have hands down the best looking women. the jenna haters are hilarious to me also. she has incredible presence, and isn't some 'soft core diva'. she's constantly getting tied up, spanked, and having dildos and fingers stuffed up her butt. saying she's a racist because she has 'never had a black man stick a dick up her ass' is stupid-if she's a racist why would she be eating kobe tai and mercedez's pussies? stupid. like it or not, there people like me out there who are kind of disgusted by 'sextuple anal' sex tapes with guys rubbing thighs and crack whore looking women. porn is a fantasy and that's not what a lot of people fantasize about. keep on your crusade raging against the evil 'corporate porn machine', but I think its silly to think its a 'problem' that 'stupid people' like me buy what they want and ignore what other people think is so 'cutting edge'. it's like a freak show-what do girls have to do, literally have their anuses ripped? be bruised from getting slapped? have epileptic seizures during sex? everyone's entitled to what they're into, but I don't think its a problem that companies like vivid put product in the marketplace and willing consumers buy it as opposed to more 'extreme slut hole' porn. finally, i think that the girls that do work for companies like vivid are more relatable because although some of them do very dirty things, some of them are more restrained during sex (like some actual living women who don't have sex on tape for a living) - i think that's a lot less contrived than a woman begging for her butt to be gaped. most women that live in the real world don't like to be punched in the face during sex or have 16 dicks up the butt. they like to get licked all over, have vaginal sex with clitoral stimulation, and be comfortable instead of being twisted up like a pretzel. i see this kind of conversation like theo ne wannabe punks in suburbia have about a band being 'sold out' for signing to a major label. while they claim to be anarchists living off their daddy's salary as a corporate lawyer talking about how we need an anarchy revolution. just because a corporation is behing it doesn't mean it sucks-yes some corporate stuff sucks, but a lot of it doesn't suck. |
| Leeroy Magic Member 178 Posts 6/07 | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Light_District_(studio) What I don't get is if you and Vince and Mike started it, how come you aren't still running it? Aren't you guys technically the owners? Jewel mentioned in another thread how Platinum X was acquired by RLD not by consent. So what is going on? I don't know what to believe. |
| Leeroy Magic Member 178 Posts 6/07 | The last scene I saw with her she had large fake tits and had formed wrinkles around the bags of skin as she leaned forward which is disgusting and a big turnoff. I think it's a combination of girls becoming contract stars and production houses pumping out title after title with the same stuff (RLD/PlatX). But in all the bad there is some good. You have Stefano at RLD coming out with some good films. Cassidey while at Vivid managing to still look hot. But you have to wonder if a girl like Cassidey or Kody had not become a contract girl for Vivid, how much better porn would be out there with them in it? We will never know because we are forced to see the same style of porn on them throughout their prime. Now you got the same thing happening to Bree Olson with a 5 year contract taking her right through her prime. Adam and Eve is known for their creativity but they shoot completely different from RLD, Evil Angel, Hustler, etc. So what you have then is even more glut and less variety. |
| Bill All-Star Member 5334 Posts 6/00 | So, to some extent, Red Light was in competition with the same directors who's product they were distributing. |

| Draxxx Senior Member 3831 Posts 2/07 | Different people seem to have different definitions of what "Corporate Porn" is. If "CP" is businessmen who are trying to put out as much product as inexpensively as possible that's not always a bad thing. That only becomes a problem when costs are being cut in the wrong places. Throwing lots of money at something doesn't always mean you end up with "better" stuff. If "CP" means stuff like movies/companies like VIVID then again "CP" isn't automatically bad. Doesn't VIVID, DIGITAL PLAYGROUND, WICKED, etc., stuff in many cases top the sales charts? That would mean that someone likes what they're doing. I understand what they do might not be the cup of tea everyone but they seem to do just fine with their audience and they move product. Maybe it's worth saying or maybe it isn't but some people seem to lump all "GONZO" type movies together and seem to think the genre itself is a problem. All GONZO isn't automatically bad and it's not going away and it stills sells. The "cheap" stuff. I like it. The only time I don't like it is when it's so cheaply done that it freezes and locks up in my DVD player. The cheap compilation type DVDs let me see performers and performaces I probably would've never seen otherwise at a bargain price. I don't expect the dics to be high quality and that's okay with me. The "cheap" stuff as in smaller companies don't bother me either because like with anything else if I don't like it or what they're doing I don't buy it. If no one else is buying it either then it evenually goes away. Plain and simple. Personally, I think the 3 most important elements that sell porn are (1) The performers. Most average consumers want to see their fav pornstars and don't really care about what company they're working at. (2) Themes. If Joe Blow wants to see big ass women I don't think he cares what company is putting it out. If there's a DVD priced at 20 bucks that supplies that and another sitting beside it priced at 30 bucks unless he fnds the women in the one for 30 much more appealing he'll always go for the cheaper price. If he likes what he sees on the box cover of the more expensive one as long as their isn't a huge difference in price he'll go for the higher priced one (that ties back to "THE PERFORMERS" theory). (3) Company/Director. If a persona has been pleased with the stuff from a company or director it's likely they'll seek it/them out again. At most comanies the directors are played up so they more than likely search out a company. I don't think that most of the posters here are "average" consumers and are looking at things in a totally different light than an actual "average" porn buyer would. My 2 cents. |
| Porn Scout Deactivated User 3735 Posts 10/02 | You are right that the growth in the number of sellers of porn is driven by demand. But, it's also driven by lower barriers to entry. Gonzo is just cheaper to produce than features. You can produce a DVD for $15,000 and even if you only make $5,000 in profit, that works if you are releasing 8 titles a month. The gonzo model also allows producers to target niche fetishes more effectively, which simplifies the marketing aspect even further.Yes, it's basically a race to the bottom. I think RLD is sort of the poster child for this.I really hope you are right. I would like to see some of the true bottom feeding producers go out of business. In the gonzo world, this is the niche that Evil Angel and JJV are occupying - the high-end premium gonzo niche. It seems to be working for them. They aren't putting out as many titles as RLD and Hustler, and they don't seem to be targeting niche fetishes quite so narrowly, at least not with every title. |
