I've seen BangBros remastered scenes, and while they do improve the resolution, the overall quality is about the same as the original scene. Same thing sadly with Naughty America. When watching a lot of 80's and 90's movies on TV, they remaster them pefectly, and the HD seems like it could have been produced recently. Obviously, the budget for mainstream is so much more than porn. How expensive is the remaster technology that the movies use? Do you think a wealthier company like Brazzers could ever do something like this? Also, how many of you would love to see old scenes remastered?

Erm, the film used for major mainstream movies 20 or 30 years ago was of much higher quality than any recording material used for porn made even just 10 years ago. Try catching repeats of cheap made-for-TV movies from the 1990s and you'll see mainstream stuff that doesn't look all that much better than porn movies from the same period. It's not in the remastering (for the most part), it's in the source material.

You are probably comparing motion pictures shot on 35mm, which remaster as HD very nicely, to shot-on-video, which will always look pretty ordinary, especially as screens get larger!

Movies shot on 35mm can be scanned digitally at well beyond 1080p, which is why older movies shot on 35mm still look sharp today when they're scanned properly. When you shoot on videotape or 8mm film, there's less of a frame to scan so the digital scanner doesn't scan in as high a resolution.

You could probably do a more than decent job of remastering old porn movies as long as they were shot in 35mm but the cost must be so high that no one can afford to do that. Which in my opinion is really too bad because some amazing porn movies have been lost to time.

As already posted by others, the quality of the "remastered" video is limited by the quality of the original source. Frankly, for older video, the remastering/re-encoding thing is (IMO) little more than a gimmick to appeal to those customers who demand HD.

I think that the bigger problem is that the 35mm (and, often 16mm in the case of porn) original masters have been lost to time, and are no longer available (even if somebody has an idea where they might be).
In many cases they no longer exist.
When we're lucky, people have able to put their hands on prints that played in movie theatres, but they are usually in such bad shape (scratches, wear-and-tear) that restoration is required if you expect to get a decent result. Film restoration is expensive, especially for a small market like classic porn consumers, so this becomes cost-prohibitive.
If only it was as simple as making a quality transfer.
