Over the last ten years many male performers formed small companies and performed only in their own videos. Recently I noticed many of them work as performers again. Do we have a crisis of the performer-director-producer?

Juha - I think you are giving too much credit to the guys, no offense, but let's be a tiny bit realistic. First of all it takes a certain somewhat smart and motivated individual who has saved his funds to go into the performer-director-producer role. I don't think the industry is rampant with savvy entrepreneurs, though they do exist (thank you John Staglioni, Joey Silvera, Rocco, Peter North etc) And by your own statement if they are returning to performing, would it not be performer-director-producer-performer?
Actually I am seeing more female performers turning towards this. More and more of my clients are deciding to launch their own websites and only perform for their own endeavors. Recently it has even been the newer performers. Overall it was usually something a performer did when she was nearing the end of her career. Now women are realizing that creating and maintaining their own sites is not has hard as it once was. We also practice in the music business and I see the performers in adult going the same way as bands. Big record companies are really no longer needed, big production companies are going to be going the same route. Piracy is killing everyone in the digital distribution game. Its hard to maintain income when your content in all over the internet for free. The small leaner companies will fair much better. While I do not think that performers can expect to make what they use to, they can supplement their income with their own sites. Sites and VOD income can be a good recurring way to pay the bills. When you work for someone, you get one check, one time. If you can make it work, why not do what YOU want to do instead of being told what to do?
I think what he is referring to is the fact that Red Light District directors John Strong, Michael Stefano and Mr. Pete are now performing in a bunch of scenes for internet companies like Traffic Cash Gold, Brazzers, Reality Kings, and Naughty America.
Yes, that's what I was talking about. Though I didn't have a specific name in mind. It appears to me that director-performers have to cut back on their own releases and to supplement their income with performing for other companies.
Based upon BTS footage I've seen, I'd suggest that there's another dynamic in play: how demanding it is to produce content. The constellation of responsibilities and concerns is probably smaller for those in front of the camera than for those who work on both sides of it.
