Okay - I've driven my current player into the ground! It's starting to not even play some discs - most disappointingly, the new "Feeding Frenzy #8", which plays just fine on my PC's DVD drive.

My current player is a Zenith DVB216 - It's got progressive scan (probably de rigeur on all players these days), frame-by-frame, zoom, A-B repeat, and most importantly, a shuttle ring on the remote, which allows for playback at variable speed - from frame-by-frame all the way through 1/2 speed.

I'd like all the same features if possible. Maybe even a region-free player. Not really interested in a Blue Ray player, unless it's backward compatible with today's standard DVDs

Any suggestions of players that meet all my needs and will play almost anything?

Thanks!

The Panasonic S35 works well for me, it doesn't do region free or convert PAL though (it will play PAL if your TV can convert it), for region free and PAL conversion I use a Yamakawa 238

pinc - Does it have a shuttle/jog control on the remote? How about A-B repeat?

Thanks

There's no shuttle-ring as such, but 4 buttons made in similar lay out.

It does directly and by remote
- repeat (all, title/chapter, A-B)
- still/slow (gradual)/step play (forward/reverse, not VCD and DivX reverse)

Thanks everyone!

After reading many very positive reviews, I went ahead and ordered the OPPO DV-970HD Universal DVD Player

Should get here in a few days. No shuttle/jog on the remote, but basically everything else I need, and several reviews talk about the crisp, clear picture - sounds like a pornhound's dream.

I'll post back with a review after I have a chance to road test it. I really just want to be able to watch "Throat Gaggers #10" all the way through without freezing and skipping - particularly the Kaci Starr scene (probably the hottest in the movie).

OPPO doesn't ring a bell to me, so I'd like to see a short review as you say.

Far more important however (IMHO): you're able to watch movies again, so I hope you're reviews of those will be forthcoming (my no.1 guidance).

Have fun!

Got here yesterday!

Good news:
The picture really is much crisper than on my old Zenith - so clear it's almost scary. In a couple of scene in "Throat Gaggers #10", it seemed like the dicks were coming out of the television! And the sound seems better too - clearer with better dynamics. Best news - I get to watch Kaci Starr in TG10 getting defiled on my big screen TV without any freezing or skipping.

Not so good news:
The 16:9 "squeeze" looks much more distorted than I'm used to, so I'm sticking with the correct dimensions - which for almost every porn movie (at least any that are not shot in true 16:9) means seeing the ugly vertical black bars on the left and right sides of the screen. It's a trade-off. I miss the shuttle/jog ring - have to get used to manipulating the slower speeds.

Bottom line - I have to get used to a few differences. For some scenes. I might have to hook my Zenith back up, just so I can use the shuttle ring. It will be fun re-watching some favorite scenes with the new clearer picture. Almost like rediscovering some of them.

Thanks pinc! Yeah, if it was already poorly lit and out-of-focus, it will be even more obvious - ugh!

I must tell you, watching Throat Gaggers and being able to discern every tear that flows down each girl's face, and seeing tiny droplets of spittle that have landed on the camera lens is a revelation. I'll have to watch the Kylee King scene from "Gag Factor #20" today. I can't imagine that scene being any better than I remember it, but who knows?

Cumwhipper does your new player match my below interest ?

I'm having a hard time finding a player for .wmv movie files. I'm looking for a player with HDMI, plays 480, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DivX.

I've read some about your player and it looked like a nice system.

Any refferal for a player for .wmv would be helpful.

Sorry - Don't know any more about the Oppo for .wmv

I will say that overall, I'm still very pleased with the Oppo. I still miss the shuttle ring, though. It was a perfect tool for scanning at slower speeds. Oh well, the picture is so clear it just about makes up for it!

The Oppo doesn't play .wmv files. Here's the [invalid URL removed]factsheet on the Oppo.
