First of all, the "separation of school and state" is hugely impractical. While Duke is a private institution, some of the nation's best university's (like Berkeley) are state schools, and I would imagine that the overwhelming majority of college students attend State schools. Moreover, the problem has emerged during the era of privatization and neoliberalism. In the 1980s, I paid for a Berkeley education by doing part-time work, and graduated without a penny of debt. Belle's parents weren't burdened by their educational expenses precisely because education was largely financed by the state. To this day, we see that nations that have maintained a vibrant system of public education are doing much better than the US (in terms of the economic well-being of young college eduated people), and nations that have gone deeper down the neoliberal rabbit hole (like Chile) are doing even worse than the US. Of course, Time often gives voice to the Washington Consensus, so it's doubtful that even her fifteen minutes of fame would have landed her on the pages of Time Magazine if she made an argument that directly countered the Consensus, and I applaud her for using the opportunity to raise a real issue.
