| Bob All-Star Member 5516 Posts 3/03 | A Seagate hard drive of mine got fried. I’m not sure how, but when I inspected it, the circuit board header was damaged. Luckily, it wasn’t the drive my OS was on, just a slave drive containing data. Unfortunately, I (incredibly stupidly) hadn’t backed up that drive for a couple of weeks and I have business data on that drive that I really need. I tried to fix the drive by replacing the damaged header with a header from an intact hard drive of the same model, but that didn’t work. My computer didn’t recognize the patched drive. (Although maybe I missed a step in my process – I don’t know.) Any suggestions for other self-help strategies? Any suggestions of reputable people or firms that handle data recovery for reasonable prices. Seagate will take a shot at it with a 4-week lead time for $500-$750 (no files, no charge), but I'd like to get it done more quickly and less expensively, if possible. Any help would be appreciated!

A 250 gig ATA drive isn't exactly expensive (at least not now) but it isn't a $10 accessory, either. Seagates used to be good drives. I've been hearing bad stuff about them lately, though. And I have a 160 Barracuda that's making some fucked up buzzing noise intermittently. It'll die soon, probably....and probably when it'll be disastrous. |

There is NO DEMO of SpinRite available. The reason is simple: No one would buy it if there was. It may interest you to know that a lot of "professional" data recovery services use spinrite in house. SpinRite will try many, many, many different passes at the data in many different ways, spending hours and hours if you allow it to. It's nice that it's so small. Gibson writes EVERYTHING in assembly. Spinrite can boot from a floppy or a CDROM, so you don't even really need to install it. This sounds like an ad I am SURE. It's just that I am extremely impressed with the product and I like to share sometimes. I have nothing to do with Steven Gibson, GRC, or SpinRite. I hope this helps someone. The Seagate deal seems to follow the good, fast, cheap principle -- they're cheap, which means they're not fast. Ontrack will dial in to a machine and usually remotely fix the drive; only in severe hardware damage will they need the drive... but it's easily 2-3x the price of what Seagate might be charging you -- but it's same day usually; so its the time tradeoff (where cheap gets thrown out the window.) A similar service is DriveSavers which has come recommended to me, but I have not used their services; they're supposed to be cheaper than OnTrack, but the one quote I got from them put them only slightly so. Good luck! |
