What you need to do is create a database with as many separate fields of information you wish to be able to sort by. You can create additional fields later on, so don't sweat it.
I believe that a consistent naming scheme for your files is a must!

(the .VOB is just the file extension, and not part of my naming scheme)
My basic database includes the following six fields:
File the full file name as shown above
Backup DVD if you're making backup DVDs, this is the DVD # (i.e. 0001, 0002... 0430, 0431... 1005, etc.)

Source the name of the movie (or, I guess, website)
Source Media DVD, VHS, Internet, etc.
File Type .VOB, .MPG, etc.
Scene Type scene, cumshot, BJ, solo, tease, lez, photo shoot, behind-the-scenes, etc.
Some things might not be obvious:
(a) 1of2, 2of2 at the end of the file name are when the scene is larger than 1 GB (i.e. video DVD .vob files are limited to 1 GB). So, when a scene is larger than 1 GB, you must have multiple files.
(b) Cumshot, popshot, ejaculation, BJ are due to the fact that I harvest and create these clips myself in addition to the original scene itself.
I create sequential backup DVDs as I harvest my porn collection.
This is the primary purpose of the database.
As I create each DVD, I maintain a simple word processing file of the contents of each disk.
Then, each disk's contents are also entered into the database.

My external hard-drives archive consists of seven 1 TB drives:
Scenes A-B & W-Z
Scenes C-I
Scenes J-K
Scenes L-Q
Scenes R-V
Cumshots (includes Popshots, Ejaculations and BJs)
XXXtras (includes trailers, title credits, behind-the-scenes, sex ads, photo shoots, etc.)
Since everything on the external hard-drives archive is also (and first) backed-up to DVDs, there is no need to enter the hard-drive contents into the database (it's already there).
The file naming scheme I discussed, by default, sorts everything in alphabetical order. So, all files belonging to a performer sort together.
Your database, basically, will tell you if you have something, and what backup DVD it is on.
If you have it, it will also be on the appropriate external hard-drive.
NOW, if you only have backups on your external drives, and you didn't organize them from the start as I did, you will simply treat your hard-drives the way I treat my DVDs.
