I was wondering if the "date of production" refers to when the video was actually filmed, or when it was released, or what. I find it interesting to see the changes, growth, etc. of the performers over time, but with all the DVD transfers, re-releases, compilations and all, it's hard. At times it seems even the studio isn't sure either.
It's just frustrating that the only sure-fire way to date a video is to keep a running tally of the girl's tattoos, but keeping up that logbook can be a lot of work.

I always understood date of production as the date(s) the scenes were filmed. It's a lot easier than keeping track of the tattoos or boob jobs.

Over here at Adult DVD Empire, we try to put the actual production date (the date the actual film was made) in our listings. For example, sometimes DVDs will give a production date that is actually the production date of the DVD, and NOT when the movie was filmed. We try to always put when the movie was actually filmed as the production date. However, sometimes it is impossible to track down a production date, and in that case we will go with what is on the given on the box, although this is not always accurate.
Hope this helps you out a little!

dumblond - Are you referring to the Date of Production listed on web sites or the Date of Production listed in the opening Section 2257 screen on every DVD?

Smartblonde(ie: my nickname for you), I try and put what the box says, what the credits list, and whatever other reputable sources say about DOP in my reviews. I know that many people have asked about it and it's a good guideline as to styles of filming and/or what time during someone's career a flick was made.

Of course, sometimes no such date exists in the minimal credits or dvd case so then the search for accurate information is on. ;)

Astro, you're a genious! I neglected to factor in the boobs, this brings a whole new level of organization to my "date by tattoo" system. From now on, I'll first classify "BB" (before boobs, 'cause you know they're coming, just don't know when) and "AB" (after boobs). So, when trying to nail down the year something was filmed, it might go something like this:
"O.K., she's got the beach balls in, (while a turn-off, the stiffness & any obvious scar lines only serve to fine-tune the date) but doesn't yet have the dragon, upper left thigh, NOT back. (Keeping accurate records of the correct body part is vital here). Let's see, that must put it, hmm (dumblonde does some finger counting here) MID 1998! BINGO! Hey, come to think of it, this would make a pretty good interactive game.

Thanks everyone, yes that helps a lot.
Drew - uh, screen 2257?
I guess if I laid off that skip button to get to the good parts, I might learn something. Thanks

Every porn DVD I have seen has a screen of info about compliance with 18 U.S.C. Section 2257. The date of production should be listed on that screen if the movie was filmed after July 3rd 1995. The law does not require the production date to be listed if the movie was filmed prior to that date.

Blondie, BB and AB may work for some, but most the surgery seems to be addictive as many are going back for more. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking that Jenna is on her third set right now (thankfully, they're much better looking now than before). A simple BB or AB just wouldn't work for a lot of girls like that.

I'm not sure about all companies, but here at Evil Angel, DOP refers to the date when the actual video was finished with production (that is, editing).

A good example is John's upcoming Buttman's Big Butt Backdoor Babes 2 on VHS. One scene was shot in 1998, one in 1999, one in 2000, and I'm not sure about the 4th! Anyway, the DOP will read the last day of editing (in November 2000). As for the DVD, when it gets made later, Evil Angel will list "Date of Production was: " or it will simply say, Copyright 2000.
Luckily, this type of scene shooting doesn't happen too often, but it does happen.

This is also the case for compilation tapes. Most of the ones I've seen reflect when the comp was made.
