As I work at PrivateUSA/OGV, I try very hard to keep my posts appropriate and not seem like I'm just shilling my product. Hopefully, it is OK for me to just confirm some of your statement and offer a bit of explanation. If a company wants to just pop an under 2hour feature onto DVD with only Chapters and a gallery and little attention to transfer quality, total production cost before replication can be as little as a couple of thousand dollars. When you start adding extras to the DVD costs soar, ESPECIALLY when the features are unique to that title. For instance: Once you've encoded a preview for one DVD you never have to pay for encoding it again and costs on subsequent DVD's are not incurred. However, when we include the Behind the Scenes mini-documentary on each feature not only have we spent the money to make the documentary especially for the DVD but we then incure the cost of encoding for digital. Each language track and subtitle can cost as much as the entire production budget of a straight transfer title. A good parallel to this exists on the VHS side. To make sure that customers get the best product possible we duplicate our tapes on very high quality VHS tape stock. Just the cassette shell and the blank tape used costs us over $2.00 per piece. Our distributors constantly comment on how few defectives they have to deal with on our product. The frustrating thing is that they also constantly ask why we don't have any product that we sell for $1.50 or $2.00 like most of our competitors. All I can ever tell anyone is that, as the old saying goes: You get what you pay for. I was just discussing this very thing with a very good friend of mine who is now in the DVD department at Wicked. We are aware that some are not thrilled with the prices, but at the same time don't want to lower the quality of the product. Hope this hasen't been to long or self-serving.
